Does anyone want to hunt through this training video and spot any possible trialists?

I know he's there so it's not really fair. But best shot I could find of what looks like Matt Ellis in the back.

You'd think we should be trying hard to sign guys like Bevan, Whyte, and Wynne with them being experienced kiwi players and our squad lacking experience especially after Kosta, Rojas, and Sutton have left.

Makes you wonder if these guys really aren't keen to come here or we would rather have the squad be young academy guys with 5 imports.

Myer Bevan could be worth looking at. Did well at the club world cup and could be a useful back up striker

Well apparently two guys from the Northern League are trialling with the Nix. One basically confirmed as Matt Ellis, the other - no leaks as yet.

The Wynne lack of interest really surprises me.

So some of you know for certain that the Phoenix havnt bothered approaching these guys. Just asking as im always seeing the assumption made that its the Phoenix not making the offers. Any chance its the players not wanting to come here.

We don't know, just speculating because it's been a very quiet off-season (maybe we assume they don't communicate with players often because they don't communicate with fans often?).

I think Chief (or Gill on the pod?) said that they have reached out to some out of contract/fringe AW players (Waine being the only one named) so we hopefully contacted some kiwis.

Would be very difficult to convince players like Waine, Garbett (still hope), Just, Singh to come here so fair enough we haven't progressed with them.

Players like Bevan, Whyte, Wynne we are likely one of their best options based on their current situations so it seems more likely we don't want/haven't tried to get them which is strange in my opinion. Would be very mutually beneficial as we need experienced, resident players aged 23-30 who aren't injured and these guys would be getting regular minutes in a better league that could open more pathways for transfers or AW call ups.

Again i say with this statement your making the assumption the Phoenix havnt spoken to any of them
"so it seems more likely we don't want/haven't tried to get them which is strange in my opinion"
Im not saying that i know they have, just interested why people assume the Phoenix havnt spoken to certain players.
In the past there have been instances where they have spoken to players and for whatever reason they didnt want to come here which is perfectly okay.

And…playing in the league in Canada is well below A league level and the USL often below A league level.

If they’re looking at Paterson and Dyer previously, for example, they might decide they’re better off with recent academy graduates.

There’s a gap between Waine and Mata say, and some of the other players.

Not that it might not be worth a gamble, but that’s what it’d be, a big gamble.

Wynne is an unknown quantity. Plenty of experience, injuries, but still with the skills? Would be CB and LB cover. How much better than LKH or Loke is he? And does he want to move which is Ballane’s point.

Josh Laws is still available.  I thought it was wrong to let him go but he is 27 now and experienced enough. Good passer of the ball.

Maybe, part of that is because the club is usually that good in their signing of contracts (multi year deals, imports that aren’t played, etc) and many people’s default view of the club is… meh…..

What is a WOKE council...

I hate how people use that term to describe anything that is left of centre and doesn't agree with one's political leanings.

There needs to be a similar term for the right that shows their generally phobic viewpoints and wealthy elitism everytime they say something like - there needs to be personal responsibility, something like FOSS - full of stupid sharke.

The great things about being WOKE is it generally means you care about others more than yourself and believe in the power of the community looking after one another other than it been left up to the individual. Kind of like school lunches - FOSS ideas says it the job of parents, whilst ignoring the fact whether that statement is true or not, won't help hungry kids get fed becuase you can't suddenly make people into good parents.

Because of FOSS - we are now in a world where Trump inexplicably is the most powerful man in the world again!! Give me WOKE anyday over that.

Rant over.

Hadn't seen Rich-Baghuelou name before but he looks like he'd be a good option! 25 so about to hit his prime, a bit of experience in League 2 and 1 and was in Palace youth system. And he stands at 1.96m so he'd be a danger from set pieces and add some needed height to the team.

If we were to finish off the squad by adding Ellis, Import 10/Winger, Rich-Baghuelou and Laws. I actually don't mind the look of the squad and think it could do well but it would depend on a few things.

I think Rich-Baghuelou or Laws would have to show enough they're capable of being a solid A-League defender and I think we'd need LKH, Sheridan and one of the younger wingers to make the step up to be reliable starts as its hard to trust Retre and Nagasawa will have great seasons and needing a starting LB for the 11. And then obviously Eze and the other import providing value.

It used to be political correctness, now it’s woke. They’re terms that don’t really have any meaning so they can fill up with whatever grievance anyone has. No one wants to oppose effective bowel cancer screening, but cutting back on wokeness in healthcare is a different matter. No one likes opposing anti-child poverty measures, but if it’s racist DEI targeting or the hint of it, well. Because, the presumption is taxpayers and citizens are WASPs only, so they’re the only worthy recipients of government business.

https://wellingtonphoenix.com/news/wellington-phoenix-vs-wrexham-afc-match-preview/

“It would have been nice to have a couple of weeks’ more preparation, but the group is buzzing,” Italiano told media on Friday.

We’ll have a younger team playing in the first half and the second half will essentially be the academy playing. I’m buzzing for both groups.

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase what the squad can do.

“We’ve already come a long way in the pre-season so far. We addressed things from last season but everyone is on the same page, which is good.”

Fairly sure (bad memory recently) that someone in the club said they have been sent more than 500 CV's by agents over the off season. As someone that has had to sift through 300+ CV's for a single job opening, you don't contact everyone personally. With the resources any NZ org has, you just don't have time. So yeah maybe the club was interested or maybe the players didn't stand out in comparison to others put forward. I assume and hope the club is spending the time doing their due diligence. Communication with the fan base is frustrating for sure but I understand why they don't with prospects. Negotiations fall over for many reasons and talking too much publicly can put potential players that were second/third options off. As a fan, I am frustrated, as someone that knows the process, I understand they will be working on recruitment and it is sensitive.
Then again, I am not exactly inspired by our new striker signing. I hope he is a bigger Krishna but my brain is saying wtf did you sign him for.

Considering we knew months ago that we needed an experianced CB and LB I am a bit surprised we have not found replacements already. Its no drama but the earlier recruits arrive the more time Chiefy has to imbed them in his playing system.

Just watched the post match presser on YouTube. He said "we have signing coming in Monday/Tuesday. We're in the later stages of speaking to a CB. Depending how that goes that will condition whether we bring another visa up top, it's a bit of a balancing act. And then there will probably be a player that comes in after that, so that will eventuate over a month, hopefully everyone in by September 1."

Might indicate a potential visa CB?

Or a high quality local CB, so still having a visa spot free to use on an AM signing.
It could be either. It's a fairly cryptic comment from Senor Italiano.

I really hope it's the 2nd option. Team needs a high quality no 10, and that will be much easier to find with the whole world to search, rather than limited to NZ/Aus.

So we are waiting for Eze to get clearance, another signing next week and a further signing soon after. After being at the game last night I think we have some serious potential contenders which will give Chiefy a most wanted headache.
