WPM 2025/26 Squad Speculation, Confirmation and Mutual Termination

I'm happy with signings I've seen. Eze has physicality. Mile has played in the A-league before so will know what it's about. It shows they've learned from the Ishige/Nagaswa signings - still can't believe they're both at the club tbh.
If Mile and Armiento are wingers(?) I'd be very happy with that, I think we really struggled to get behind teams last year and it made it quite dull. The number of times we stood in YF last year watching Sutton and LKellyH combine to completely cock up a promising situation in the left corner was agonising.

Armiento on the left, Mileusnic on the right and Eze in the centre, if that's not attacking intent I don't know what is. I am far from pessimistic about the forthcoming season.

New players, new hopes.

I wouldn’t expect us to be challenging for the top, but we’ll surprise a few and score a few fun goals. And if we sign a strong CB and a convincing midfield reinforcement, or the other way round, things become interesting.

We had Wootton, Surman, Rufer and Pennington keeping almost everything out as the basis for our almost almost title campaign.

Don’t think we’re quite as solid, but I’m definitely a Hughes fan.

We’re definitely not reliant on the kids, which might give them the space to make an impact or force a bit of competition.

We might cop some too, but we’ve got to keep our heads up and not despair.

I’m still hopeful of one more goal scoring diamond, whether it is Supyk, LBS, Walker, GSR, Ishige, Loke,, Nagasawa or another signing who will exceed our expectations. I think looking at the names we’ve got I definitely think we can expect some attacking fireworks at some point. It might be a little more trigger happy than Kosta et al of the recent past, but if there’s more pile drivers like Sheridan’s and importantly some of them go in, sign me up!

As long as we play with enterprise and give our attacking players a chance this season, I’m going to be happy, even if the results aren’t quite there. I’d prefer a fun 7th to a tedious zero shots 6th.

And as to the Brisbane example above I’d expect our training facilities, fans, stable ownership and coaching to manifest potential and push that finishing place higher!
We have some pace in the forwards but we lack someone in the middle to create.  Makes it easy for teams to defend against us as we have limited avenues of attack.  Chiefy says he has learned a lot from last year.  Looking forward to the benefit of those learnings.

Is Rufer actually injured at the moment or is it still just time off due to new baby?

Just wondering about when we might see him in the squad again and start to get minutes
Bump, has anyone seen any talk about whats up with him seems he is training but apart from being told he had maternity leave as far as i have seen there hasnt been anything else. Andrew Voerman any chance you can ask next time your at apress conference

I gather he's been trying to get clear of some long-running niggle since returning to training. Should be an update on Monday.

Koki Saito was good in the Championship at QPR. Although only 5'7", I watched a fair bit of him last season as he was on loan from Lommel. Very quick, Skillful and would be a great foil for Eze and would be able to get settled with our two Japanese players here already.

There’s a lot of very handy Japanese players floating around Championship level or between there and Prem in Europe.

The superstar players not quite emerging like Nakata, Honda…though for a while Mitoma absolutely was.

All abit meh about the Mileusnic pick up tbh but it at least gives us another adult in the room.

The bulk of our squad is in the 19-22 age range, they might have talent but don't have the experience yet. Imo we should be looking to add guys around the 26/27 age bracket, so they are playing near their peak but there isn't many good Aussie/NZ options floating around that are available.

How many times have you called for buying one of your beloved QPR players? And how many have we actually bought lol

A lot because the Championship players would be good here and as QPR couldn't manage shark, it would be great if the Nix nabbed some. I get to see QPR play regularly so I know which players are on the fringe and could offer something here, if not wanted there.

The first one was Richard Johnson, Then Spider, then we had Nick. That's 3.

You've got great taste LG. I love QPR. They're the first English team I saw play live, a 2-1 win over Wellington Rep XI at the Basin in 1983. They'd just won the 2nd division under El Tel, but he didn't make the trip.

QPR was the first team of any sporting code I remember getting up to watch in the middle of the night to play spurs in the 82 FA cup final.

Also when I went to live in the UK, my first ever league game in the final day of the season versus Crystal Palace in the old first division where they had to win to stay up.

6 nil to them on the day. It was a great day out.

Definitely my favourite team outside the premiership.

Would love it if Alex P, played for them

Gill I think it was said in an interview that the end of season review identified they didn't have enough players in the 26/27 range and they would rectify that as much as they could. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I think it's a good pickup. You can't win a league with a bunch of kids.

Hoping for a tall, athletic and goal threat CB! With LKH and Smith we already have some good targets for set pieces but adding another tall, but experienced cb is crucial since we have some very good set piece takers now in Armiento and Ishige.

Crucial signing. With everyone fit we aren't looking too bad now.

Everyone fit is the key issue though.

With the squad capped at 23 excluding replacements etc of course being injury free is crucial - only need to look at how injuries impacted us last season.

So I take it Matt Ellis has returned to Auckland City, ie his 2nd trial at the Nix is over?

Any other Kiwis trialling there at the moment?

Crikey I hope the Nix are paying Ellis for his time. He's been there pre the Wrexham game. So seems to be dragging on without a contract being offered, unless he's had a training injury or something??

Had thought the signing of left winger Armiento might have pushed Ellis (also left sided) out of the picture.

Yes I thought there was comment that Armiento was signed as a LWB option.

Probably, but I'm not on the ground in Wellington so I'm just piecing together what I've been told through various contacts.

If someone could pop down to training and get me some photos that'd assist greatly too. 🙂

LG might be able to help out there he goes sometimes. I was hoping to get there this week but looks doubtful at this stage.

From Chiefs presser we have signed a visa cb and will be done in the next day. Also looking at signing another left sided player and an attacker.
Playing 3 4 3 this year and confirmed Josh is back and ready to play but no Mileusnic as he isn't fit enough yet

That in conjunction with Rollo's tweet about the Nix having their eyes on a few more kiwis is interesting. Who are available Kiwi left sided players and attackers? I infer from Chiefy saying "left sided player" and "attacker" separately that the left sided player is going to be a LWB for the intended 3-4-3
Permalink Permalink

As above Matt Ellis is a Kiwi left sided player, apparently still at the Nix on trial.

Separately an additional Kiwi attacking player??
Guess away. Could be anyone, esp if like Ellis it's someone from the NZ domestic scene.

Gill spoke at the beginning of the offseason about there being 3 big contracts, or bigger money available for 3 identified positions. Those were CB, #9, #10. Armiento & Mileusnic cannot be on big money. Will be very disappointing if we only get Eze & a visa CB and fill our the squad with even more Aussie journeymen and/or Kiwis based in NZ.

There is a big difference between what you may want and whats available and wants to come here. With only 2 visa spots available you shouldnt have expected more not as if they had freed up a spot.
A visa CB and im happy to sit back and see wht develops no point be overly critical before the season has even started.

As long as it is a classy Brazilian centre back, playing out from the back and good for 4-5 goals per year that will soften the blow of not having a number 10.

If however it’s some donkey from league one in England who can’t get a gig in that league any more, then not cool.
