People are slamming Sasse for his open goal miss, but Zawada also had a near miss in the second half (not an open goal though) and he was fuming. The mike clearly picked up his very Polish outburst in frustration.

His backheel attempt was ridiculous, had an easy layoff to elliott. Got a bit carried away although who can blame him !
I mean I can sort of see how it’s the most expensive squad most years we haven’t filled all visa spots.
Ball might’ve got paid more after signing his new deal, Zawanda and Kraev being at a good age and decent Europe pedigree more so Kraev.
and then I’d say Rufer would be on his most expensive contract at the nix and then players like Sutton, Payne, Sail and Lewis and Waine would be on increases from their first contract and then Kosta is probs on more than we’d want. But if it is the most expensive, definitely on paper doesn’t look like it would be massively more than other teams prior.
I'd imagine Wooten's on a good wage too, when we signed him we were pretty desperate. But, yeah, mainly our imports are in the prime of their careers rather than the twilight and will be expecting more than our usual import players.
Given its been acknowledged how difficult it can be to convince players to come here i dont think there should be any surprise that its been said this is one of our most expensive squads.

It would be harder to convince them to come here than for other A-League clubs. At least I think that is the case for decent players from Continental leagues, and also from Latin American countries. This might be behind the fact that some will end up moving to an A-League club in Australia after playing for the Nix, and I do not need to list the past examples. In contrast I cannot remember any players from UK that moved to Australia after playing for the Nix. For that reason alone I suspect (with no real evidence) that we would pay more for Zawada or Kraev that we would need to pay Wooten or Ball to come here. I may of course be wrong, for example how come we were the first club to have a Mexican player in A-league? Although to be fair there were not one but two Cost Rican players in the A-League well before then. It may have to do with opportunities available to the players and their overall mindset, rather than just the money / conditions / being offered to them.

I think Gill just said we struggle to attract Australians, not players in general.

No its been defiantly said before that they have had difficulty in trying to convince some players to come who wernt Australian. We have even been able to convince a couple to come who them preferred a move across the ditch.

that was my understanding as well
we're a gateway nation! which is interesting, because there are plenty of unemployed pros at any given time and also plenty of pros playing in places much worse than wellington. i would have though the league and the city would be quite attractive
still, hopefully in the future we will beable to take a transfer fee if we sign imports for long enough. the current rules are odd.

for some pros playing in an arse league in Europe is still playing in Europe with the opportunity to be seen and potentially move to a bigger league globally. Whilst the Aleague is probably been scouted by bigger players from the lague need to meet the requirements to play in Europe before a move is possible. If you're already there then it's an easier option for clubs.
Maybe with global warming Australia like Rhodes will disappear, then with some tectonic plate movement Albania will float down to a Sth Pacific position. Should help the Nix with player retention and bonus they can still call it the A League.
