It was about this time last season we began to drop away too in very similar fashion wasn't it? The parallels are spooky.
Not quite this time last season. Other than our 1st derby loss we were undefeated going into the 2nd one - after the 2nd derby on 7th Dec is where it all went downhill last season
4 months ago
Yup Rufer moved it sideways, but who is he suppose to hit the pass too. Eze is up top by himself, so that low percentage.

And there is no genuine AM for Rufer to hit.

If he had options like when we had Old and Kraev, he was more positive. Hes limited because the team is limited.

i'm struggling to assess whether we've improved at all. trying to maintain an open mind and perspective when it's all varying degrees of bad.

i think we mght be worse than what we were before last dec 7th. and better than what we were after then, when we capitulated.

what do others think?

Only got to see the second half.

Is it worthwhile to go back and watch the first half?

Auckland will rise once more

1st much worse than 2nd. in terms of quality and entertainment, the first was a 2/10, second a 4/10

Well thats two hours of my life I'm never getting back.

Been saying this like every game for the past wee while now eh?

Still it’s not quite a 56 year trophy drought yet huh?

Saw Piper play a defense splitting pass. Eze runs and runs. And also sits at the back post for tap ins. Armiento hits bombs. Kelly-Heald made some good tackles and possession grabs.

15 minutes it looked like ours.

We don’t have a Smeltzy or a Kosta. We need to knock constantly on the door until we break it down. None of this control and single goal stuff.

60 minutes wasted not attacking imo. At home. I don’t give a f if we concede from a high press but create 10 good chances. I do hate stuffing around, not playing football and conceding late from a switched off defense.

Better than last season, but still a very average watch.
2nd half improved over a pretty dire first 45 mins.

Draw would have been a fairer result. Hughes inches wide, and a great Kurto save to deny Armiento. Nagasawa poor technique not to at least get on target with that last chance.

The Piper super sub injection, is now starting to look very limited as the Nix's go to strategy to get a goal.

Macarthur not the worst side. Lots of ALM old heads running around.

But feel unless Chiefy can find a match fit Chico Geraldes playmaker signing to replace Ishige, it's going to be very much a lower table finish again.

This game felt like it was right out of last season. No creativity, no urgency, no shots on target (until the 93rd minute). We can’t afford these performances, especially at home. The fans look to have already started voting with their feet.

How good was that comeback 2-2 draw vs Glory and that amazing hakf vs CCM?? Let’s be honest, we have not played a full 90 minutes all season .. not sure why people are surprised by this result

Outside of the negativity I quite like Eze. A bit raw but great find
my impression watching him is that he is too good for this team

Nah bro, not at all. And would still be saying that if we had come away with 3 points today from our second half efforts. It was a really dry effort from both sides.

Low entertainment half. Play style was as if Phoenix were the Phoenix of last season and MacArthur were Phoenix of this season.

I just don't really think we have the squad to really do much. Sure we have some guys out, but they're not the type of players that will elevate us maybe offering a little bit more off the bench than our youngsters. The difference maker will be employing a system that separates us from others, I don't think just doing the same as other teams will bring us results.

It’s low percentage so let’s do it a lot!

Sheridan and James back and getting to know each other threw out our fluency a bit. Sheridan offered little on attack until the last ten minutes, where we would have an outlet in Payne or Loke.

And we didn’t try to get it to Armiento early on. He gets a little space and he’s making MacArthur crap themselves (except for Kurto).

Are missing Ishige and Piper.

How’d keep Rufer next season?

Wonder how Cassidy might have gone today!

News on LBS? Tell me Chief hasn’t fallen out with him or that he’s got an unspecified injury break.

Have to be honest boys I was hoping beyond hope for some mana from heaven to pinch 3 points- a dumb handball, a keeper slip, something…just to win on a bad day and get our season going.

Even the ref gave LKH a makeup call and was fairly consistent. Can’t say the game flowed as a result, but that’s not his fault.

Would we get any better with a new coach?
I do feel our players could be used better, but again we are falling into same tactics not working and not changing.
This is the first time I’ve actually thought after a game, shark Chiefy could easily get the sack.
Would we be complaining? We know he’s not working past this season so why not get rid now? Is there any way we make the 6 with Chief?

TBH if we finish bottom 3 next season will be hard to attract anyone, especially if AFC come top 2 again. I'd drop Rufer in a heartbeat too. Offers nothing and cost us a place in the Final two seasons ago.

LBS will be gone so quickly if he fell out with Chiefy.

Couple of great saves from Josh in that game.

…and that’s about it.

Since April 2024, the Nix have had exactly two wins at Sky Stadium. It is a miracle that anybody turns up
Since2007
Looks like this could be an all time low crowd on TV

Appreicate it's a longer off season than most, but reckon you'd be hard pressed to find a coach in any sport not just football who's job isn't under even the remotest bit under threat after only being able to deliver two single home wins over the course of 18 months.

Maybe Chiefy could do a job at San Marino???
4 months ago · edited 4 months ago · History
Yeah Armiento wasn't involved enough, esp in the first half.
Commentators talked about it frequently.

His left foot is a weapon, and really only him and Eze look like scoring in open play.
Otherwise it's a Hughes or Piper header from a dead ball.

Chiefy & Gill, need to get scouting ASAP to replace Ishige. Is just not enough attacking quality in the squad and sounds like Mileusnic is out for a wee while more yet.

Edit - Pity too that Walker always seems to be injured. I think at the moment he offers more than GSR and maybe more than LBS as well.

3 goals- one for Kraev and two for Kosta in the first 25 minutes for WSW.

😭😫😫😭 That used to be our forward line. Plus Old, and Zawada injured and to return and we thought we didn’t have a good team…

Imagine any one of those 4 and Eze.

Is there any sound bites from chiefly in relation to what to expect from the season ie attacking, goals, excitement (or did that not happen)?

Some other thoughts about this game

- Sheridan had a stinker. I was so excited about him when he was breaking through, was more impressed with him back then than I have been with Loke so far. I fear he has been really stunted by being played out of position for so long. Hopefully that performance was him blowing out the fullback cobwebs and he will be back to somewhere near his best next week, if Loke doesn't come straight back in

- Really unimpressed with Najjarine. Was super underwhelmed when he signed and have seen nothing to pleasantly surprise me. Seems to think and act so slowly when he is on the ball.

- Eze and Armiento are our only good new signings so far, for me. Everyone else who has arrived looks like a clear downgrade on those who left, from what we have been able to see so far, which is worrying given how bad we were last season

Such a flat game. And such a flat atmosphere at the game, who knows if anyone will turn up next time.

The stadium needs to chill out, they confiscated the cowbell from the one MacArthur fan who turned up. Not exactly the way to attract fans. Wasn’t causing any harm.

Do we want to see Armiento put into the front 3 and Edwards come in at LWB? Roa Conchie and Najjarine delivering very little

Straight from the horses mouth "We have a similar playing style to Adelaide United."

Soooo you know, make of that what you will...

We need a new coach. It’s time.

Well, in my opinion what we watched today wasn't football, and it certainly wasn't entertainment.

Stop passing back to the centre half. Stop taking throw ins and free kicks backwards.  When you win the ball, go forwards Immediately.
Attack relentlessly for 90 mins when you are at home.

Football like that today will kill the game,at least it will for me.

This was so bad. I gave serious consideration to entering the field of play, in order to get banned from attending future games. Chiefy has to go I’m afraid.

I would do anything to have a player like Brattan.. he can be a cod but my god the way he controls the game is outstanding.. the difference between him and Rufer today was day and night
4 months ago
Macarthur did a good job of stifling our play. Brattan was a big influence. Not good when our keeper is player of the day. Rufer  did well to play 90, but we have no other option. Eze makes things happen, but needs support.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

4 months ago · edited 4 months ago · History
Well that was disappointing, seems we are going backwards.  Subs came on too late.  Could have given Piper more time.  Felt around the 80th minute we were happy to accept a draw but then that goal.  My enthusiasm for this season is slipping for both teams.

Edit anyone who thinks Greenacre should take over might want to see where the Phoenix Reserves are currently sitting on the National League table.

This headline is false - it took us MORE than 90 minutes to get a shot on target! 🤣

Des is still jobless.

Our squad isnt good enough... nor is our coach. We should have released our to Jap imports and fired Chief last season.

Just seen that we haven't kept a clean sheet in 17 games.  That will probably be 18 next week against Adelaide.

You can't do anything about the Japanese players if they're contracted and wanted to stay, which it seemed they did. If you pay them out then that money still counts towards the salary cap.

But yep, as great as it would be for Des to come back and save us, he'd be a fool to given the quality of our squad and the apparent lack of ambition from the higher-ups. After such a poor season last season plus losing Kosta, Wootton, Sutton (and Chico and Rojas), if the club had any ambition at all they'd have tried to make some statement signings.

It is looking like Eze will prove a great signing and Armiento a decent one too, but it isn't like these were seen as real coups when signed, and none of the rest of our signings have yet impressed (or could have been seen as ambitious or marquee signings due to their recent pedigree), so this does nothing to disprove the apparent lack of ambition.

In fairness. Greenie's players are for a significant part out of their depth in the national round. The quality of that league is pretty good.

You got me thinking, would Iffy and Greenie be a good combo? Iffy of course not being qualified.

Of course, Des would be a dream. But considering his status and some of the jobs he's being linked too, it's still a very long shot.

I agree but Roofs arrived yesterday morning after 20+ hours travelling and 80 very tough mins midweek against Ecuador

Ridiculous to compare him to Brattan today after factoring in that

I think MetalLegNZ is wrong actually, Des is head coach of a Saudi Pro League team now, must be on good coin
