I blame the formation for our scrappyness. Had a nice game last week with a 4-4-2, when Sanchez entered the mid-field it cranked, that should have been the only change. Instead we got a weird 4-5-1 thing with Greenie lone striker and Ifil out wide.
Ifil shouldn't play wide, we want someone clinging to the wing for that job and Ifil gets into those good wide positions when he plays in center anyhow, seems like a waste.
Brown and Lia should only be in the Mids at the same time if we want to shut down the opposition midfield and expect little from our own.
Pleased for the win but christ it was a frustrating game.

THIS.

Delighted we got 3 points out of it, but I'm not sure either side deserved nil out of that game ... on the positive side, it SURELY can only get better than this??? surely???

Was good to see so many Perth.

As for the Spuds fans, whilst appreciating their attendance, putting up Spuds banners at a Nix game?? Looked daft. "We're here to support the Phoenix." guys. Just my humble opinion. What next? Man U, Chelsea, Arse, Liverpool banners? I hope not.

What was the first time?

Against Victory this season I think. The irony is that the ref actually had a pretty good game that day. Must have seen how we treated Matt Gillet

Good we got the win, and we fought pretty hard,  but so frustrating at times...get into the centre near the box, then inevitably go wide to the corner...why? you're already near the goal! so many wasted passes/movements and dicking around in front of goal.

I like tautologies because I like them.

An ugly 3 points is still worth the same as a good 3 points. We needed a win and we got it, so I'm happy.

Well they were up from Dunedin so presumably they aren't Nix fans as such.

A bit like that lone Nix guy in the Den a few weeks back.

how do you know they were not cheering for the Glory?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

After games like this (hope there aren't too many more) I think a bit of Glen Miller is in order. Almost puts me in the mood so to speak.

For me the worst was a 0-0 draw with CCM in season 3.  Absolutely no good play at all and a northerly gale to go with it.  I remember it was so bad I quite enjoyed it - I at least wasn't doing gardening at home.  This one had too many vaguely football like bits to be up to that standard.  But games with Perth are usually crap - they have Jacob Burns after all.

A central midfield of Pantelidis and Burns at the end.

That is a lot of sh*tc**t in a small area.

I think rickie needs to take the rap for this(apart from the players indiscipline)

He is a brilliant defensive coach...one of the best in the business. Again today the defense did a great job in shutting down Smeltz and co. However sometimes it seems like he is all at sea when it comes to setting up a side to attack. Ifill was wasted playing wide and very deep at times. Sanchez and Brown got in each others way. Brown was often too far forward. Greenacre was often isolated alone by himself. The whole setup didn't work and it was dreadful to watch. God bless Siggy and a great corner from Leo.

This makes a fair bit of sense.

Watched the height of Van der Brink clear cross after cross, and Siggie or Dura stuggle with Smeltz and think we could do worse than get a reasonable tall bloke.

^^^^ My thoughts exactly.
Brown and Sanchez both fill the same role in different ways, Brown all late runs in, good defensive qualities, scraping away in midfield. Sanchez on the other hand is the player we've always missed, an AM who creates opportunities with great passing and dribbling and vision.
I know which I prefer.

haven't read all of the thread but...

I'd like to see Ifill up the top (worked well v sydney) maybe some tactical reason why it won't work against other teams but seems better than having him at semi-right back

delighted that we won

worried that Manny might not re-sign, not his best game but he really does get stuck in, and is not bad with the ball at his feet these days

There was a Scottish guy in the Fox today, going on about how much the A-League sucked. I was embarrassed to have to admit that that game was actually sucky even by A-League standards. But then the Scottish guy showed me his Hibs tattoo, and was gobsmacked to find out that I knew who Chris Killen was. He then declared me the coolest Kiwi chick he'd ever met, which suggests he doesn't get out much.

So, yeah. For the first 65 minutes that game was sh*t vs. sh*tter - the worst game of professional football I've ever watched. I disagree that our formation caused the scrappiness - what caused it was two physical teams who totally neutralised each other tactically. It was like twin brothers fighting, and the only difference I saw was that the LOLry got tired first. Iffy barely saw the ball but he saw it more than Smeltzy, ha ha.

Also, Pav is a dumbass, and Vuko showed big nads by not only playing on with a dodgy foot but coming up for two corners right in front of the YF.

I'm not sure if this has been said, but kudos to Gareth for coming down into the FZ and for taking his shirt off when we scored. After his appearance on the poddy, and today, I think the club is in very good hands. We love you Gareth!

He scored his first goal when he was with us. He owes us (and Manny too - I think he was going to take the penalty wasn't he?).

The send off of Ward and Brown? Matt Gillett. Surely you have not forgotten that shocker already.

Anyway, you know what I've just noticed about this match thread? We're all talking about our formation, our players, their pluses and minuses, etc... not a word about the Glory players, apart from Vuko's attempts at scoring another goal. And you know why? They didn't even do anything worth mentioning. We were pretty crappy, but our opposition did precisely five-fifths of jack-all today. They should be easily more embarrassed than us.

I honestly can't remember seeing the ref being shown the back passage, I mean the side exit in that game.

I mentioned this during the game. Dewhurst mentioned Smeltz' name and I said to myself 'Oh right, is he even playing?' and thats a tribute to the back two that they really did strangle out one of the most dangerous players in the league

I can kinda agree with this. He was not not flash but he had the opportunity to be a lot harder on us as we kept doing dumb sh*t. It could have been worse...

I was looking forward to seeing the first Ref lynched at the Ring of Fire.
But he took a side exit :|

Noticed they were playing replays on the big screens. Guess they ain't worried about us going mental and ripping seats apart and throwing sh*t anymore.

I miss Vuko, never again will such a charasmatic keeper grace the grass of Westpac stadium. Fav ex-phoenix player.
Dodgy as all hell when he plays for others of course.

Not impressed at all by the fever singing the Vuko chant that was used  when he played for us. WTF Cheering of players sent of for a brain explosion, chanting for opposition players, out sung by a few opposition supporters in your home pub.

About the only plus is the passion shown by one of the 9.Come on Gareth use a shirts off photo in your next set of publicity shots, has to be a winner even if its with only 6090 of us.

Change in FFA rule, I guess they figure we will see the ref got it right and stop booing them more times than we will see he got it wrong.

I will sound like a wet blanket, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. I appreciate them showing passion but the club needs to put out a professional image, and I don't think it shows that. All I can think of is Mike Ashley when I read this.

For me, it shows that at heart, our owners are fans just like us. If he had his shirt off anywhere else, I would agree, but in the FZ with 10 to go is fine by me.

Very happy with the win, what a bullet of a goal from Siggy.

Really need work on the crowds, though. Reported at 6 020 which is certainly an inflated figure. People won't be happy with this but I'll say it anyway. I've been thinking about why crowds are so low and the answer really hit me today, lately we've been playing terrible football. Even when we win. It often isn't in the least bit entertaining. We really need to get some new players in to turn that around. I'm still going to be watching and supporting, of course, but in the hope that it changes.

Here's hoping we take advantage of Brisbane's poor form of late on Wednesday in an entertaining manner!
