Who plans on undertaking the trip down south for this game?  Should be a lot of fun, I'll definitely be heading down.  Bringing the Yellow Fever to Otago for the first time will be sweet.

I notice this game is against Melbourne and the Phoenix said they were playing Melbourne in Christchurch preseason as well.  Is this still happening (so there'll be two SI games) or is there going to be just this one game.

If only it was two weeks earlier, then I'd be in the area.

Think it is an awesome idea, clever to try and capture the winter festival market. I wont be going however, not enough pingas

Awesome, the Phoenix are coming to Christchurch as well.  Like last year they're playing a Mainland selection, but still should be good.

Date?

Just said July.  It's in one of the two latest articles on the homepage.

"Meanwhile, planning is continuing for additional Phoenix pre-season activity.

A match against the Central Coast Mariners in Australia in July has been slated, while the Phoenix will also travel to Christchurch for a three-day visit which includes a match against a Mainland Football Selection.

Were also working on a trip to China, so weve got a busy time leading into our first competition match of the season on August 9, said Pignata."

A strong rumour that the Wellington Phoenix may also play a pre-season game in Wellington has Wellington fans excited. (Sarcasm alert)

It would actually be great to see the boys play where most NZers live, ie the upper north island.

Whilst this seems like a good idea, I can't help but think that vertually no one will go as it will be winter sports and rich poeple there, going to Queenstown, whilst fun, is historically a rip off for flights etc.

Before emigrating to the UK for my OE I worked in management at Air NZ and know just how much we kiwis get ripped off by the airlines flying there. I can fly from London to Sydney for less!!!

I'd probably make the trip down to my old stomping ground of QT for this match if I wasn't winging my way between Orlando, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona for two weeks....

Should be some good photo opportunities in Arizona though wouldn't you think....

Have to agree with Whity boy on this.

It seems that as a loyal season ticket holders we're going to be the last people to see the Nix play in their new strip with their new lineup.

Before I get jumped on and told to get myself to one of the away games this is not an option for me.   Not all of us are guys who spend half their life in the pub (not saying that I wouldn't like to, just saying that it's not an option for me.)

A-League teams traditionally don't debut new strips during pre-season. Gold Coast are playing their matches in training strips at the moment, and when the Nix first started is season 3, all the teams wore their season 2 strips, except for the Nix who obviously couldn't and decided to borrow some shirts from the set of Star Trek instead. I expect our first match in stripes would be round 2 of the regular season.

(Just clarifying, not disagreeing with you  I also hope to see a preseason match or two here, even though I'm intending to go to Q'town)

Yeah it is a bit rough that Wellingtonians are being shafted.

no, going to a season away game is enough to spend on. Good idea though, not taking that away.

Sorry not up to speed on this:

So we no longer the preseason cup thingy? (shame I like to go to the bb before a match with me scarf on, wooly hat, etc)

So in it's place is Queenstown etc which gets a preseason game and we don't unless we catch a ferry to the south island? (I'm ok with with going to chch during the season but what another one?)

So why are we not getting a pre-season here then?

I mean Queenstown is a bit a expensive and overrated no?

Do they have a ground even or do the teams have to play in a zorb or white water raft or something like "It's the Knock Out"?

Bemused at the lack of Wellington in all this, unless it's the Ring of Fire'/stadium muppets playing up and stopping us playing at home?

Enlighten me.

here we go again - a few whingers out there. Most professional teams do their preseasons MANY miles away from home. Most english clubs do theirs that way (premier teams can do Asia, America or South Africa, and lower league teams usually do scandinavia or ireland). So no, wellingtonians are not being shafted. Some people need to stop getting precious and enjoy the fact that the club is drumming up even more support Reading132009-05-16 17:32:16

That's for Palmy/Chch, it's not to do with the preseason matches. The NPC will be going during that time and construction wouldn't be done during rugby season (that's not a crack, but part of the stadium tenancy agreement IIRC)

If RoF availaibility is an issue, then we could always play pre-season at the Basin, as was intended in our first season? Not quite the same but still, it's local.

League games in Palmy and ChCh - no problem as "one-offs" as RoF not available.

Training camp in ChCh - no problem - breaks the monotony of 3 months of pre-season training in Wellington.

Away trip to China - great idea - good competition, team bonding and we might find a good prospect.

Away game against CCM - no problem.

Can't work out what the Nix and the Queenstown winter festival have to do with each other but not losing sleep over it.

However probably not a bad idea;
for core supporters to have a chance to see the new signings play in a decent game before the start of the season,

for new signings to play 2 or 3 games at the RoF before the season proper so that when the season does kick-off it feels like their home ground,

to let home fans know when they can expect to see their team play when listing all the pre-season away fixtures.

I'll give it a shot

The PSC got scrapped as most clubs were organizing their own fixtures a la Wolves, Fulham, China trips etc. I myself like the idea, but not the current execution (none in Welly).

The game against Melbourne was originally rumoured for Chch, but it looks like Q'town have nicked it off them, with us still going there to play a Mainland selection. I agree with your dislike of going there more than once a season - Chch should always be near the top of the list for hosting rights, but we should share the love.

The match is being held in Q'town because of the Winter Festival, which the match is piggy-backing on. I don't know the scale of the event, but if it brings in people from all over the Otago region (and perhaps outside), then it's a good chance to gain some exposure. Q'town itself is hardly a large market to promote the team in, so I imagine it's more about getting people to watch the game who otherwise wouldn't, but are there anyway for the festivities.

Q'town has a test match cricket ground, which is where we are playing. It also hosts the national rugby sevens tournament, I dunno whether or not this is the same stadium though.

Yeah becuse we are up there with Man U, Arse and Liverpool?

The Phoenix has hardly nailed the support of the hometown has it?  Surely resources would be better spent making this a footballing town? I'm all for having the team play away for the odd game hence I'm going to chch, but I still think they need to do something preseason here at home as the preseason in the last couple of years has been wonderful. I remember the first ever game-magical!

I think its a great idea. It should get a pretty good crowd as i'm sure that there should be some overseas visitors coming for the ski season anyway. Good too see that the phoenix are trying to use their advantage as the countries ONLY professional football team and get some more supporters. And on the other side, if the response is good down in Queenstown then it would make the Phoenix much more attractive in the eyes of a major sponsor.

pretty sure its at the event centre, think were playing on the same ground for chatham cup this weekend. great pitch also used for the highlanders sometimes, but yes you are thinking of the right one.

I also think its a great idea.  Mix in a bit of skiing and the festival atmosphere, a highlight for the players and their families.  Ditto for Melbourne, earn us a bit of goodwill the league.  Make it an annual fixture, and there will be competition to play us in pre-season.  Queenstown is packed for the festival, so should pull a decent crowd who won't mind  an elevated entrance fee.  You'd have to be mean spirited to deny them.  Keep up the creative thinking I say.

Will be going, provided I win Lotto first.

Yeah, I remember reading that one EPL player's (Ryan Nelsen??) said no skiing etc during the off season.  Someone tell Ricki the team building outweighs the injury risk.
