Bri Edwards was a decent enough keeper, another 4 inches in height and she'd be a high quality Keeper.

It will be interesting to see where she goes from here.
Shes defo a bit on the short side, but from what I saw last year she had worked hard to overcome that in the way she came for crosses etc.

Great keeper I reckon, but will her size always find her out?

It's a good re-signing I think

She was in great form at the back end of last season when she was given more minutes

Nice, and if she has an exceptional season, she may be able to make a move like Macey Fraser.

Sorry to say I thought that too, though not exclusively of her across the league. It seemed common.

If you can chip a keeper standing on or just off their line they’re too short for top notch pro football imo.
And I think we can see that with the keepers Temple has recruited he wants to take that out of the game as a factor.

Would annoy me as a defender to slog out 85 minutes and then concede that way.

I read somewhere that the new keeper is 1.75m tall.
That can't be much taller than Bri Edwards.

Edit
Google search and Carolina Vilão's height is in the range 1.68 - 1.74.
So shorter than Foster but taller than Edwards.

It's more the ability with ball at feet that seems the issue with Temple and Edwards/Foster.

That's not to say that both would chose to re-sign, Edwards did have a period or two out of the squad due to personal reasons.

Edwards was considered good with ball at feet. Foster not so much and kicked long most of the time.
Edwards will always be remembered for that penalty save now after foster got red carded. Made another brilliant save in that game which was nominated for save of the season might have even won it.  Hope she gets an A league contract elsewhere.

it won save of the season. It was Gordon Banksish and I reckon best save across the aleagues. Definitely had the best moments out of our keepers last season. I was looking at stats for the season and both Edwards and Foster had relatively high number of accurate long passes but low completion % meaning attempted long passes was high and Temple has said he wants to build out from the back more. it's hard though to make any meaningful analysis based on stats for Edwards giving low min played.

I only mention it here because he was open about it with a friend of mine he'd never met before at the Halswell United club rooms here in Christchurch where he does a bit of junior coaching...

Well that's the second ex-Nix player who looks ""absolutely stoked"" to be at her new club haha. I can only assume that while the pay is piss-poor here, the team environment is second to none!

Haha I was thinking the same.  Maybe the photographer told her to get her game face on or something.

Gutted we've lost Cox too.

“I can only assume that while the pay is piss-poor here, the team environment is second to none!”

Doesn’t say much about the coach if basically all the support staff and all of the imports leave in the off season.
Fingers crossed about some more locals returning!

Between the new US Competition and European clubs taking Women's football more serious, the ALW is being absolutely gutted of talent.

The reduction in APL allocation & not being a fully pro competition has turned the ALW for the foreseeable future into a development league.

Apparently he lost dressing room part way through last season.
Hopefully they can recruit a good manager and assistant coach to address the culture.

It gives plenty more players an opportunity for them to take advantage of. Who knows how many more Macey Fraser’s there are just waiting for their chance to get a run of games to show what they are capable of. I can think of at least a dozen players that could have played ALW if the opportunities that exist now were available back then. There is a clear pathway to make it a career and the pay will only grow season to season.

The reality it's a part time job for any players in our league/team.  If they get a chance to travel or make it a full time job, I don't blame any of them for jumping on the opportunity.

But as mentioned above, if it lets a bunch of young Kiwis get on the radar of the world stage then that's awesome for them, and awesome for the future of the football ferns.

Yeah, we SAID something like that was going to happen after Chloe Knott left, but I believe people started yelling about "woke" and the issue was dropped

I dont think players leaving the ALW or staff for that matter, has anything to do with losing the dressing room. The simple reality is that the ALW is a part time gig at best - clubs cannot afford to pay players what they are worth, they play for a few months a year, if you can get a full time gig off shore that pays reasonable money of course you're gonna leap at it. Even if you love the club you are at or the people. Money talks and being able to live playing footy without having to get a second job is huge!

I assume our players are paid somewhere around $25k , as the cap is $450k (divided by a squad of 18).

It has to be a part-time gig for all of them, Rebecca Lake for instance is a Chartered Accountant with KPMG, so assume she has some deal with them where she can basically be a part-time employee. Some of them are student's which is more doable, study in and around training during the week, games on the weekend.

Other than Knott, have any of the players that have left actually taken a step down in the club they've moved to? All the imports, Taylor, Fraser, even Edwards are moving to bigger clubs. I don't think that's an indication of anyone losing a dressing room, not to say that that has or hasn't happened - with no specifics or sources provided it's hard to have an opinion.

... Michaela Foster to Auckland United although that might be viewed as a temporary stop or a lifestyle decision

When has any women’s coach in the NZ professional game ever had the dressing room?

I mean surely no one in the last 4 years then?!?

Honestly feels like a disconnect between the expectations on pro footballers, the entitlements due pro footballers and the a league/NZ game. The ALW is not a full time gig. Until it realistically is then I feel like this is going to go round and round.

I can only say from my own (high-level social at best) experience that male coaches, no matter how technically skilled, sometimes not only don't "get" why you have to deal with women's teams differently, but don't even realise they're losing people until they're irrevocably lost

But the nix and ferns have had female coaches who "lost control/support" of the changing room.

So Mackenzie Barry off overseas now? If Ali Riley had played this morning we would have lost by more and without scoring. I hope someone buys her out of her Nix contract, I think she can step up like Bott has at a higher level than alw.

Yes would be nice to get a fee for a ALW player, rather than yet another leaving on a free. Appreciate it's tricky with the season being so short, and the pay so terrible, making 1 season contracts the norm.

But getting a fee for Fraser shows it's possible. Barry must be the next in line to head off shore. Surprised she signed a 2 year contract last year as it was.

A bit like the men, can see the ALW team definitely evolving into very much a development side, with young girls coming through the Academy. The goal being to sell them to overseas clubs, though again tricky if it's just a succession of 1 year deals. Maybe the odd long term club servant (Rebecca Lake?) who gets time off training etc to help balance a good paying job, with the pitiful ALW wages. I read somewhere she's a chartered accountant

It's in the best interests of the club to try have a small core of older players, who may never be good enough or want to play overseas. I think to make it worthwhile for them you need to be flexible re time off, to allow them to pursue non football career stuff. The coaches can't be precious if they can't make every training, the club ain't paying them enough. Longo another obvious example.

Maybe worth considering the assistant coach dropping down to take the academy and the still vacant manager and physio roles?
