I would say viewers would be closer to the action as well, but given I've never been to Newtown Park or Jerry Collins Stadium, I'll reserve judgement on those particular calls.

Jerry Collins is close, but Newtown Park has an athletics track if I recall correctly, so stand is a decent way back.

its not really that far away, closer than Sky Stadium and way better than the ring of dirt.

Both grounds are poor options for all concerned. The Nix know that - they just want to save some $ and didn’t even raise that as an issue. Gone backwards. Stick to Sky and suck it up til there is an actual boutique option in the region.

Trouble with that is there isn't ever gonna be a boutique 10-15k seater stadium in the city. The council wont fund it, the Nix can't afford to do it alone. Getting to Porirua isnt that difficult, and parking for a few thousand isnt impossible. Newtown park has some parking - not a lot but then those that attend will probably bus to Newtown anyway.
Surely saving thousands of $$ every womens home game is the fiscally responsible thing to do? We know the owners are rich but they're clearly not a bottomless pit and the last thign we need is to have a new team in Auckland arrive next season and the Welnix crowd selling up!

I quite like this option
LG
Build stands at Fraser field - 200 yards away from where they train in Upper Hutt! Play all home games for men and women there. 10k sized stadium with terraces on 3 sides and seating on the main part. Trains are a 5 minute walk and the parking is there too. And if you want, you can site see at the Army Camp !

In Ozzy u16s are free admission to ALL ALeague women’s games. Footnote says excludes Wellington home games. That is a massive opportunity to maintain the momentum with building a fan base surely. The Nix need to get on board with this and maybe approach NZ Football to help support this initiative.

It'd be a good exercise to have any games in the 09 at Mt Smart rather than desolate, cavernous NHS. Before the world cup I would have said Kiwitea Street (which was great for the Junior Ferns v Oz a year or two back) but now I think that's too small

Really don’t get the hate for North Harbour Stadium. It’s a 10 minute drive from the CBD on a multi lane motorway, more parking than any of the other options, there’s buses that go right to the doorstep, and they’ve got a dedicated busway for most of it. Field is close to the stand. Appropriate capacity for most games, will never sell out for a stand alone ALW game. Can send the kids to the grass embankments to annoy each other.
This seems like another one of those old bandwagon things. Someone went there once in 1997 before the motorway was built and decided it was all to hard, and everyone has been agreeing ever since.

Local govt has chopped up one stand for baseball so you don't get the 360 degree surroundings
Buses don't goto the doorstep, its a 15 minute walk from NSX park n ride to Stadium
Parking is a bit hit and miss.  Lots of little car parks and you never know which one to go to, or wether to brave Westfield carpark
For  weekday night games, it is not the 15 minute drive from the CBD, its that bit from where ever you are to the base of the bridge that is the hassle

What’s with the 360 requirement?
ROF normally has no one on the ‘other side’
Main stand holds 12k, which is more than ALW is getting so even if there was a full stand no one would be sat in it. and also more than most ALM gets, and if there is more there is still room across the way. You can only sit in one seat, so who cares if there is no one to look at across the way. Look at the field, that’s the 22 you go to see.
15 minute walk from the bus? Cry me a river. It’s 10 minutes from train station to ROF. If 15 minutes is really too hard, then catch the local 861, it leaves you a 5 minute walk.
Parking at ROF is less hit and more miss, and a longer than 15 minute walk unless you park downstairs at stupid money.
Moaners gonna moan I guess.

The historically poor ALM crowds at NHS, show that for whatever reason it just doesn't work. I've only been once. But it felt pretty souless with no bars close by, and definitely more than 10 mins from the CBD.

Will the Nix just be trying for two Eden Park double headers, ALM & ALW? That would seem to make some sense. Make a day out of it in Sandringham. Otherwise I actually see a packed Kiwitea St, as providing a great atmosphere for a standalone ALW match.

Surely they are planning on double headers at the same stadium for Auckland games.

On Auckland stadiums. Interesting that a lot of warriors fans are up in arms about the prospect of playing knock out games at Eden park. They seem to prefer continuing on at Mt Smart stadium. And isn't that the potential stadia for an Auckland ALM team (as per much earlier media output).

It really sums up why football is in such a state that, if you point out that NHS is really out of the way (especially if you don't have/use a car) the response is OH BOO HOO CRY MOAR.  We're in a climate emergency. Motorways and parking are *not* positives.

Last two or 3 times I had a decent outing at North Harbour stadium. Bus way is bloody convenient. Warm ups in Britomart pubs and on the terrace at the mall. Actually last time I saw Doloras in person was probably on a bus back over the bridge from the game 6-7 years ago.

Probably suffers as it’s not really the home of a team, the way the Ring of Fire is. And the last team based there were the Knights. If it were the home of a team and a strong recent history of goals and action it might be the go. It needs a bit more of an identity. It’s a football stadium as well right?

Chris Wood decided to celebrate with a pants drop there!

Plus I’m sure there are people from the Shore and further north who appreciate not having to go into town.

Tbh though the only mixed experience I’ve had at a Nix game was in the way a back days in…Tauranga? Concrete stadium, cold and poured with rain and Pantelis did his knee and stuffed his career.
Every other road trip has been good.

Haven’t been to NHS recently, but by the sounds no one has.

Remember also going to a wacky cricket game there at a ground that seemed to be in the car park and not really exist anymore where Andre Adams starred but also bowled a double bouncer…I mean it was a genuine list A one day game, but it was a bit kooky.

North Harbour rugby are now back at Onewa Domain. The baseball Tuatara have gone under. The Blues Super rugby team very rarely play at NHS. I think there has even been talk recently of bulldozing it for housing.

Jaffas have taken this off topic.
Jerry Collins would be the best option. A bit tough to get to and they’d need some hospo put in -  but at least there are actual seats.

It's probably the most suitable ground, but unwalkable, except for those concerned about a "climate emergency ",who will of course walk from island bay and back. I will park my hummer outside the front gate.

I'm pretty sure the BOO HOO/CRY MORE was about the fifteen minute walk. Realistically you usually have to do more walking than that for the cake tin and no one whinges about that.

As for cars and their impact wait till you find out what football teams get around in.

I also have a thought on the atmosphere being better in a smaller area. I agree the numbers at the women’s games were less but actually the ability for anyone to start a chant was awesome. Children would start and love it when the adults joined in.
I have tried starting chants at men’s games and got dirty looks from aisle 22. So then I never tried again.
Hutt Rec atmosphere was good from
Memory but all I really remember was the one game when it absolutely tipped it down. I have never been so wet

I’m just not sure it really is the venue as much as the crowd

Yeah, the queues to get to them were far more manageable too I though. It was a fantastic match day experience.

Surely there's the possibility for the Nix to use a smaller venue and then run their own food or beverage stalls to generate some revenue? Don't really know the logistics of how that works but must be doable surely.

That's just not how it works; you subcontract  to profressional caterers, the nix can't  cater via a bakesale.

I'm sure the Nix would be open to your ideas, especially if you find a way to negotiate around the stadium contracts, food safety regs etc.

It's not too bad for parking if you plan to arrive early. It was packed out for the national athletics champs earlier this year and it was still possible to get a park even with Newtown festival on.

I could try to catch the train in and then bike out there with me, my wife, my 2 year old, and my 9 year old.

But unfortunately that just isn't feasible between the additional cost, the danger of riding with them through Wellington CBD, and the significant time commitment.

The other option is watching the game at home but I do are about the women's games future.

So lose lose there I guess.

Haven't seen them play for the academy, only those int. age group games shown or streamed. Others might have better insight. But here is a bit of a summary.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2023/08/28/phoenix-sign-three-teenage-internationals-for-womens-a-league-squad/

Surprised Helena Errington isn't there. She must be looking at other options. One of her NZ U19 team mates Ruby Nathan just got picked up by Canberra United on a full contract.

It's becoming clear what positions we need to target for our final 3 roster spots. Would love to see Hassett return instead of getting a reserve LB as VDM is more than capable of covering there should we need it.

Issues for me with the Ladies games being played elsewhere. The Car parking!

At Newtown Park, there's not a lot of parking and what there is, is in competition with the Zoo. I'd like to think the Ladies get 500+ crowds (Hopefully a lot more) so that's restricted.

Gerry Collins Stadium suffers the same issue. Car parking is fairly limited on a very busy road. It's also a long walk from the railway station and a debatable bus service.

Where-ever they play needs to have decent parking and or rail/bus services.

It breaks my heart that those Nimby's and die hard Rugby fans stopped the Petone Rec move. That stand that was condemned way before that submission is still being used by the Rugby crowds. It was the place begging for a redevelopment and a 10-12k stadium with terracing at both ends behind any goals and a couple of 3,000 seater stands.

Hutt Rec was another area begging for redevelopment and it probably was a better choice than the Petone Rec as Rail is just a 3 minute walk, Buses galore, ample parking and a Pub/restaurant across the road.

There was a bigger picture in that development, not just for football, but Rugby and League too. Opportunities lost.

I cannot see those runnung the Stadium Trust dropping their rip off fees they charge the Nix for usage. It would be interesting to know exactly what the Nix pay and what the Rugby pays. I was told that Rugby gets it way cheaper.

It's heartbreaking to see fans getting ripped off at the Trust Stadium and the Men's and Women's teams lose out on fan numbers attending because it is becoming too damn expensive. It's not great seeing so many yellow empty seats on TV.

Years ago, I copped a lot of stick by single fans for my criticisms of the Stadium and the Trust. By now those same single people might be married with familes, I wonder if they have changed their minds and can now see what I was trying to say.

Try taking one or two adults and 3 kids to a game - Car Parking, Food, Drink and Match tickets per game. Yes, season tickets are an option but again, it can become quite a significant outlay, especially if you not able to make every game (In which attending every game does it make it a lot cheaper).

Good Shout.
As for final 3 spots.
Hoping for Longo. As could do with her leadership qualities in this team. Hassett I'd say is in need of a break, after back to back to back seasons here and Iceland.
Striker. I think Kelli Brown would be a good option. Is banging in the goals right now, But is also a tall player and has shown good skills holding up the ball and distributing at NPL level. Which would complement the speedy forwards we have already signed.
Goalkeeper.  Still think this could well be a visa signing. Someone good in the air. We conceded a lot last year from set piece and crosses. Would be tough on Edwards, but she is still very young and at the very least needs competition to keep her striving to get better.
