Wellington Phoenix The Nix have finished bottom of the table in their first two seasons and have moved onto their third coach in as many years. Is there any improvement coming for Wellington?
Manager: Paul Temple Finish last season: 11th Key player: Annalie Longo
Strength: The signing of New Zealand international Longo is a massive deal for both player and club. Longo has already shown how successful she can be at A-League Women's level, helping Melbourne Victory win in 2020-21. As a Kiwi, the opportunity to play professional football at home is a massive deal and a challenge she is relishing. In Longo, Wellington have signed a midfielder who will not only help them take control of more games but will be an invaluable asset to the younger players around her.
Question mark: Has anything changed for the Phoenix? Obviously, they have a new coach and new players, so the literal answer is yes. But are they in a position to change where they finish on the ladder? Have they been able to take the glimpses they show every season of beautiful football and turn it into something more sustainable and more frequent? Will yet another new coach mean Wellington need to wait a little longer for winning football as they work to learn new systems and combinations? We will wait and find out. -- Lordanic
Kinda think they missed the biggest difference this season to the previous two - we've not been hamstrung by the leagues aussie player requirements, now being replaced by qulkaity imports
Only 1 women head coach in the league this season.
No mention of why Kat Smith from WSW has left so late in the piece. Not very good timing but hopefully the new coach likes Clegg as a striker or winger
Suppose this goes here, been running polls in the Facebook group for who our best Wahinix player so far has been, what's our opinions here?
Personally would have 1. Knott 2. Barry 3. Foster 4. Jale 5. Wisnewski
Hard to judge off two seasons really - esp as Foster and Jale IMO had a better individual single season than consistent players like Knott/Barry/Wisnewski/Taylor had in either season (but the latter group played way more games).
The former A-League champion will be supported by vice captains Chloe Knott and Michaela Foster in a new-look leadership group that also involves Brianna Edwards, Hope Breslin, Kate Taylor and Rebecca Lake.
Not a bad first half. Both teams look rusty and first game nerves. Great to be back. Crowd is trying hard but the wind doesn’t make chanting easy. We could kick one 😎
So with the two announcements today (if I have this right): Round 4 game still TBC Round 6 game in Auckland Only 5 games now in Porirua with the Round 12 'home' game in Sydney.
Great to see Macey Fraser turning heads for @WgtnPhoenixFC Did a feature on her in 2020 & her potential & ability seemed obvious, but not to @1990Gemmalewis , then in charge of FFDP & NZ Under-20's. Lewis wouldn't even comment at the time. https://t.co/mT9ZCvfjh9@NZ_Football
Gemma Lewis was a washed up sunday league footballer from the uk that came over here like the rest of them do to land a gig. Clueless. She never spoke football and came across arrogant. good riddance.
Howdy I am still trying to work out why a season pass doesn’t buy me an actual seat at JCP. I am really interested in finding out if others agree or if someone can explain why my pass doesnt ensure the same seat every game. It seems like maybe the seats aren’t numbered and no one thought to do anything about this. Just a guess. Any other thoughts?
All comments really welcomed as I just don’t get it 😊

The pass gets you access to the game, but JC stadium is general admission for the whole place, probably not seat numbers and I bet no electronic way of checking tickets - I've not been there but I'm gonna assume that it'll be manually checked at the gate.
I would also imagine most season passes were printed before they knew what ground they were playing at. Not sure what membership numbers are over the two teams but you would haven to think members get access to the stand seating before GA does.

I think this was probably what I was hoping/expecting. Some way to ensure I had a seat. I have heard the”it is general admission” before but don’t understand as I have a season pass so am not general admission. If I bought my ticket on the day fair enough I’d need to sort myself, but I didn’t I planned ahead. I also agree that having a seat number on a pre printed ticket is not possible but they have my email address and we’ve had to use printed tickets before so why not now?
Medical science has *got* to get to grips with the relationship between the menstrual hormonal cycle and weakness in the ACL, or this will keep happening to elite women athletes
This happens to all players not just elite females and men also suffer this. After lots of studies from big organisations, they pretty much said that the Fifa11 strengthening routines done 3-4 times per week will help significantly reduce the risk of this. Which was also suggested waay back. It may have been due to accumulated training fatigue, footwear designed for male feet or muscle imbalances between other connected chains. The issue of body image and femininity can also play a part in not wanting to appear muscular even though this is an inevitable consequence of being a high performing athlete. All power to female athletes and hopefully they embrace their power to perform as well as they can. Hopefully she recovers well, and there will be plenty of support from others who have experienced similar issues. Sometimes it’s an issue of technique in terms of body position making it harder than it needs to be. There’s a Tauranga based coach on Instagram Nigel Beach that does work with elite athletes and he looked at plant foot of league players that were stepping and suffered acl injuries and suggested that can be coached out of their game to an extent. Wonder if they are still considering a replacement for Wisnewski. There was some mention of it from Temple. US college soccer season is now over. Ava Collins or Tahlia Herman-Watt could be good shouts. (I think they have both finished senior year now) And will be looking for pro options. Both would add further depth in case of more injuries, but they might have to wait in the queue for game time that's all.

You're not wrong but, TIL, research does suggest menstrual hormone cycle is a factor in ACL injury risk:
This systematic review found 13 clinical trials investigating the effect of the menstrual cycle on ACL laxity. There is evidence to support the hypothesis that the ACL changes throughout the menstrual cycle, with it becoming more lax during the pre-ovulatory (luteal) phase. Overall, these reviews found statistically significant differences for variation in ACL laxity and injury throughout the menstrual cycle, especially during the pre-ovulatory phase. Female athletes may need to take precautions in order to reduce the likelihood of ACL injury. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3581006/
Which anyone who has had a kid can attest to the impact hormones, such as relaxin, can have on the structure of female bodies.
Maybe they will start with an academy next season, so they build up from the bottom. Saw an interesting article about how they are using data to track and recruit players for Bournemouth, and they have been relatively successful with that, so it bodes well for their future. His financial backing is next level compared to most other teams I’m sure. Elbo
I really dont get the annoyance from some about the women's team cming a year later than the mens. It just makes sense. It's clear to any football club owner that the mens' team is going to financially support the club's viability and any additional teams/academy. Sure Foley is loaded and could afford to lose money but he's too smart to do that and clearly wants the club to be sustainable.

No doubt setting up a club from scratch there is an insane amount of work to do so certainly makes sense to stagger it.
