Should be a decent chance in this game

Alfeld to return to the starting position? Clegg to keep her starting spot- hope so, and for Gomez to get more game time. WSW are beatable but even a point would be good. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going after the stop start of the last few weeks.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-cup/131197716/wellington-phoenix-coach-urges-patience-as-creative-duo-miss-out-on-football-ferns-callups

For now, their focus will be on Sunday and Western Sydney, who have picked up 10 points from a possible 15 since drawing 1-1 in Wellington on January 2.

The Phoenix followed up their first win this season, 5-0 over Canberra United on January 22 , with a 3-3 draw away to Brisbane in their last outing on January 29, where Taylor was sent off, which means she is suspended this weekend.

Phoenix captain Lily Alfeld remains sidelined with a back injury, but they do get forward Emma Rolston back from suspension and will be hoping their weekend off hasn’t killed the momentum they were starting to build, as they look to close the five-point buffer the Newcastle Jets have over them at the bottom of the ladder.

Lawrence also provided an update on midfielder Alyssa Whinham, who hasn’t played since before Christmas while taking a break for personal reasons.

“She's back training and she's looking really good. She's not quite ready for games yet. We are just managing that return to play for her, but we are really happy with where she's at.”

Honestly can't see the team being that different apart from Vosper starting for the suspended Taylor and VDM shifting in one to centre back. I still want to see Clegg  given the opportunity to play in her preferred position rather than the wing, but I guess we will have to wait for that.

What is Clegg’s preferred position? I thought was left wing?
Regardless, she has looked very dangerous when cutting in

Good size stadium for a W League match. Suprised the AKL game is at North Harbour - wonder if they looked at holding it somewhere else (Kiwitea St?) it would sell out and have a much better atmosphere?

I think our short corners are of greater concern than the commentary team

we've just lacked a little creativity so far, conceeding from a corner is nothing new - we are terrible at defending those.
- Clegg has easily been the best all game
- Wisneski needs to shoot from deep more often
- Is Knott on the field?
- Foster needs to stop with the short corners
- Edwards has made some decent saves.
- Satchell seems to be all speed and not a lot else.

hoefully Gomez can make an impact, Knott has been very quiet all game.

I was worried about the bye.

We have looked decent but toothless at the pointy end of the field.

toothless and lacking a lot of urgency, 5 mins to go and we are stuck in our own half, playing the ball between our keeper and backs instead of getting it forward.

Rolston just collecting a check

yeah, no effort to meet that corss whatsoever, and then trys to hit the volley on the next cross - all it would have needed is a simple touch

Barry, Foster, Haslett, Clegg the best of the match.

had our chances at the end there, should have had many more during the game but for a lack of control in the middle. WSW keeper literally kept the win for them.

Not our best game, but not our worst either. Really not positive enough or deadly enough going forward.

But we could have had a draw.

As usual, that goal is keepers ball every time and Edwards just nowhere near it.

1st half barely resembled a football match...both sides responsible.

Slightly better in the second with the odd patch of football but gees it still was a hard watch - if anything they were just quicker in certain parts of the field at times that led to a break away or covering defence.

Just release Rolston now. Attitude poor if you can give it that much praise and her ability is very limited.  Need to tidy our side up.. yes we are poor at times but bare minimum we need effort to keep us going every week.

Clegg is raw and i think she needs time - i just think she stands out in a bad bunch - like she has potential but needs to seek a level of consistency - that will come with age.

Theres one more win in us i reckon......maybe 2 with a bit of luck so we avoid spoon again...maybe.

How many trips to Aus has Georgia Candy had to do without seeing a single minute this campaign? Coaches always seem to pick their favourites. Edwards has 1 good game in about every 5 and is error ridden in the other 4.

Was any reason offered why Edwards did not have a number on the back?  I can only guess a color clash or we did not travel with all GK kits.  Also the WSW support staff were wearing yellow shirts which did not look right at times either.

Clegg is by far our most dangerous attacker, especially when you consider how she often wins the ball against 2 defenders and her passing for a couple of key chances was pretty good too. When defenders face up against Satchell they are dropping 2-3m off her knowing that she will try and go outside to the right 90% of the time so they can stop her crosses. Cicco has a good future, but didn’t really connect with Satchell and get forward to overlap. Central area was super scrappy. The wind made it tough but both teams didn’t adjust and allow for it with their passing. Shorter passes would have been a welcome sight rather than the lofted passes and switches that often. The wind caught. Knott and Wisnewski couldn’t dominate the midfield and Hasset didn’t get much service to be a threat. Rolston - is she still injured? She’s like she can only run at 75% of a sprint??? Maybe her back injury stops her from sprinting 100%? She doesn’t appear to run freely. At present she won’t be getting any more ferns call ups. Gomez and Robertson should start the next game and Lancaster back onto the squad. Alfeld would be great to slot into the team if she up to it yet. and maybe McMeeken at full back behind Satchell with her overlapping runs could create some more chances,
It was great to see Foster get forward towards the end of the game, but why wait until the last 10 minutes to up the intensity. WSW wanted the result more than we did today. . I’m not sure Taylor comes straight back into the starting lineup as she hasn’t any form. Keep Barry and VanDM together and sub Taylor into the game at some point. Would be great to play Newcastle and Perth and Adelaide more this season but the fixture list didn’t give us as many easier teams this season.

didnt hear a reason but I suspect it was due to a colour clash with the opposition's home kit.

If the WSW centre forward hadnt have looked like Pritchard in disguise, we could have come out of that much worse.
Satchell seemed to have been worked out, as someone pointed out. She ended up turning the ball over way too much.
With our resources, we could do worse than pay Clegg as the target. Rolston doesnt seem likely to add much. Id like to see Gomez starting , probably with Knott AND Wisnewski

Sorry i'll have to disagree - do we want Clegg being flogged like Pritchard has been? isolated and told to run here there and everywhere.... That kills a good developing player. That's what these uneducated or these book licenced coaches don't understand. Its criminal coaching. But they do it out of fear of consequence these poor girls.

These coaches have zero ability to adapt and change but i would be playing two up top to suit the side as well as their player development.

Clegg running off Pritchard or Roberston and Clegg both looking at getting in behind in turning teams around.

Whinham is back training with the squad. That is positive. Maybe if we have Clegg up front and can secure the ball better in midfield then Clegg won’t have to do a heap of running, as we will hopefully keep possession better. We haven’t pressed as much away from home as that would be impossible to keep up with the Ozzy heat, so they have to pick their moments. In terms of goal scoring we didn’t create the chances we are capable of. It would be interesting to see how the squad 5 a side games go - who are the players that score the most goals. I reckon a 5 of Barry, Foster, Gomez, Clegg and Hassett would be pretty hard to beat. Maybe give a chance for Foster up top as we have 2-3 others that could play left full back.

too many girls drop in and out of sides for personal reasons so not going to get hopes up with some - dare i say it just play the ones that love the grind day n day out and battle it out to the end of the season. I personally want to see a personality with this side some grit and resilience through it. In fairness most have through some terrible results.  Aussies teams have a bit more about themselves. Which frustrates me because i don't think their ability isn't always better.

Hoping for a formation change like a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2...dare to dream.

Personally I find all this dropping in and out of teams, regardless of gender, a bit pathetic.

All of us work jobs here and I'm sure we don't get to just fudge off because we don't like it. I don't know, maybe some of you guys can but I can't. Maybe I'm just too much of a tradie to have sympathy for this shark. You're getting paid to do a job, fudgeing show up.

If they were working a job anywhere else they wouldn't get to just fudge off for a couple of months, they'd be sacked.
