I felt Edwards kept us in the game well with her acrobatic saves. Non existent marking and ball watching at corners caused more problems than Edwards punched balls. Satchell had her best moment of the last 12 months with that run in the second half. Cicco played well as did the rest of the defence in terms of stopping goals. But the whole teams passing radar was rubbish today. When we won possession we often just gave it straight back again. Mind you they were pretty guilty of lots of wayward passing too. I’m concerned that our fitness doesn’t seem that high and we also seem to have lots of injuries- surely not from being overplayed, as it’s not even a game per week. Alfeld, Gomez injured still and Wisnewski and Taylor wearing thigh strapping. Both of them only looked 75% fit today. We have missed Whinham, and seems like Rolston is fitter/less injured at the moment and she had some nice ball control in tight spaces, but no support.
I don’t understand why we moved away from playing long balls to get the ball away from our defence. It worked well against Canberra and also Brisbane, so why stop doing what was working for us and helped us score goals. During the game we also need to learn and adapt to what is happening. A big strength of their keeper is coming out and catching crosses- she’s very confident to come mush further than other keepers, but we kept serving it up to her on a plate? Read the game and adjust your crossing direction, and why doesn’t one of the 3 coaches say this during the game? Or are they just enjoying the spectacle instead of looking at what they see is working well and what changes we need to make. Seemed like we were going through the motions a bit with little urgency to get a goal back or win the game. Just because they beat you last game doesn’t mean to say they will beat you today. To change to 3 at the back when Vosper came on in the 80th or 83rd minute is too late to allow players to get up to speed of the game and try and get a goal back. Should be earlier than that if we are trying to get points. Seemed like a 0-1 they were happy with as it wasn’t 0-5 or 0-3 like last season. Robertsons chances, and the Clegg cross in first half just past Knott and Satchells run to the byline showed that we created about 5 decent chances to score. Only needed one of those to get a point. Yea they should have scored more, But they didn’t and we didn’t push hard enough to get a point when it was within our capabilities today. What a boost that would have given us too. Hopefully Hassett, Alfeld, Whinham and Gomez are ready to start next week. And we find our passing gps.
