We travel away for the first time this season to the reigning ALW Champs, who are also pointless after two games. Huge challenge for the team.

Knott is expected to be available, no word on Marissa van der Meer yet afaik.

MELBOURNE VICTORY V WELLINGTON PHOENIX

Melbourne Victory squad:
1.Casey DUMONT, 2. Tiffany ELIADIS, 3.Claudia BUNGE, 5.Jessika NASH, 6.Beattie GOAD, 7.Gema SIMON, 8.Alana MURPHY, 10.Alex CHIDIAC, 14.Melina AYRES, 15.Amy JACKSON, 16.Paige ZOIS, 18.Kayla MORRISON, 19.Lia PRIVITELLI, 20.Miranda TEMPLEMAN, 21.Elise KELLOND-KNIGHT, 22.Ava BRIEDIS, 23.Emily KOS, 24.Anna LIACOPOULOS, 27.Rosie CURTIS

In:
7.Gema SIMON (returns from injury), 19.Lia PRIVITELLI (returns from injury), 15.Amy JACKSON (returns from injury) 24.Anna LIACOPOULOS (promoted)
Out: 9.Catherine ZIMMERMAN (injured)
Unavailable: 17.Maja MARKOVSKI (injured), 11.Natalie TATHEM (injured)

Squad analysis: No Catherine Zimmerman for Victory this week, who underwent surgery on Tuesday for a fractured fibula suffered against Sydney FC in Round 2. Victory named both Gema Simon and Lia Privitelli for last weekend’s Big Blue, but neither made the match day squad. The experienced pair join Amy Jackson in being named as key ins for Round 3.

Fantasy tip: After a Round 2 own goal, expect Kayla Morrison to bounce back against the Phoenix in an attempt to lead the champions to their first clean sheet of the season.

Wellington Phoenix squad:
2. Saskia VOSPER, 4. Mackenzie BARRY, 5. Marisa VAN DER MEER, 7. Chloe KNOTT, 8. Grace WISNEWSKI, 9. Ava PRITCHARD, 10. Alyssa WHINHAM, 11. Betsy HASSETT, 12. Brianna EDWARDS (gk), 13. Paige SATCHELL, 14. Michaela ROBERTSON, 15. Zoe MCMEEKEN, 17. Claudia CICCO, 18. Te Reremoana WALKER, 19. Charlotte LANCASTER, 20. Milly CLEGG, 21. Michaela FOSTER, 22. Georgia CANDY (gk).
In: 8. Grace WISNEWSKI (return from injury).
Out: 3. Kate TAYLOR (injured).
Unavailable: 1. Lily ALFELD (gk) (injured), 3. Kate TAYLOR (injured), 6. Isabel GOMEZ (injured), 16.Emma ROLSTON (injured).

Squad analysis: Wellington are without Kate Taylor for Round 3, with the first choice central defender in need of time off after collecting an ankle injury which she’s carried through the early part of the season. In good news for the ‘Nix, however, young Football Fern Grace Wisnewski is in the mix to return to action after a calf tear suffered on international duty.

Fantasy tip: New Zealand international Marisa van der Meer scored 10 points as a defender in Round 2 despite conceding four goals in defeat to Western United; the Football Fern scored Wellington’s only goal of the match and at just $165K could prove decent fantasy value.

So Taylor has been nursing an ankle injury through the first two games. That will explain her inability to turn and why she got skinned regularly. I'm glad the coaches have finally made the decision to rest her. We really need her playing at 100%.
I'd like to see Candy get a chance in goal.
Hope Wisnewski is good to start.
Suspect Walker will come into the match day squad.

Some big name In's there for Victory.

Why are they playing an injured player?
It’s not school football.
Probably cost us 2-3 goals and messed with her confidence.
Not to mention possible long term damage to the joint.

Would like to see Candy given a shot between the sticks but other than that really solid side. VDM moving into CB will hopefully sure up the leaky defence a bit.

Very strong looking MV side.
Going to be tough especially with 30+ temps.
Will be a positive if we can at least score again. Resrict them to less than 3 goals.
Hope Robertson can continue her form from last week and cause them some problems.

Agree with above. Think this would have been a good game to give Candy a start. Bit of a free hit for us really against the current champs.

Can they please stop fudgeing around with it at the back. They lack the skill to do it and invite pressure.

Also does Edwards know how to kick long?

yea that fudgeing round at the back got me sharkting my pants too.

We look to do great passes to beat defenders but most of the time we don't have a player there.  Feels like the team still ain't quite on the same page.

There are some really good signs in this team, but God damn I hope we have the gas to go all game because I have thought that before half time in the last 2 games.

The amount of give aways under little pressure was shocking. Terrible passing.

is a horrible player to watch, for all her energy and speed, she contstantly falls over the ball, runs into defenders or misses a pass every 2 attempt.

Keeper doing her best to keep the spot.

held a strong victory team to 1-0, we never really looked like toubling their keeper, thats an issue giung firward. Defensively we are ok in normal play, set peieces we lack heght and a bit of organisation, which may be down to the reserve keeper not commanding the defense well. Our midfield lacks something, Whinham is fast and nimble, but lacks strength, Knott again was very wuiet all game, she is not commanding the CM role lie she should be. Hasset does well but she cant run through an entire team by herself. Satchell has great pace, but no decision making or final touch. We dont have height for set pieces, we have noone with a killer shot - I dont see where our goals are coming from. We wont be winning much if we can't score and keep defending set pieces so timidly.

0-1 loss and now 0 points from 3 games.
Defending at corners a bit of a work on. We have players back but not marking or committing to a challenge doesn't help the cause.
No goals yet from midfield or strikers.

Positive aspects:
1. We didn't fall apart in the final 20 min
2. We didn't give their attackers so much space
3. We had a fairly even share of the midfield
4. Hassett, Knott, Vosper, Whinham all made good contributions.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Away to Victory, on paper that looks like not a bad score. But in reality we were second best for most of that game.
Full credit to the girls, they give it everything and some more.
But just like the start of last season, our execution under match pressure is what is letting us down especially in the opp half. We came right in the end last year but it took a while. We look like we have gone backwards since then.
The ALW off season is long. would these girls have been better off playing in the NZ comp in real comp matches over that time?. They look very rusty.
Hope Whinham is ok. Going to land badly on the physios and coaching staff if she is out for a long period with concussion symptoms after letting her play on in that heat after the head knock.

When I reflect on the level of skill execution so far this season in this team. I am still flabbergasted that the Nix coaching team didn't even contact Katie Bowen and talk to her pre season.
Thought having Gomez back was good. Hope Wisnewski is not far off. Those two and Hassett in midfield would help.
Foster has impressed me. Once Taylor is back in defence, I'd look at playing Foster as a striker.
Shame Robertson didn't see more of the ball today.

The defenders take far too long with the ball - if we are going to play it out from the back we need the left and right backs to push higher up and create angles / triangles - we are very flat and then keep getting stuck deep. Meant our wingers were consistently having to help out and then start from a standing start, rather than having the ball played into their space. We also don't seem to be able to find the mid-fielders from the CBs - possibly because we are lacking a proper 6. Although we also don't seem to be trusting ourselves - instead going wide everytime which is a lot easier to defend. On the few occasions where we did for the mids, we could then switch and create something... In saying ALL of the this - looked like both teams struggled in this heat. Thought their number 10 found a second wind - almost the only one that seemed to have a second gear in the second half.

Agree and shame our number 10 was again found wanting!
Our whole midfield seem disconnected, we need more energy and movement just seems so static??

This has been happening in all games so far too. I hope some of the injured coming back will help with playing out from the back more successfully – there are just no easy options for them to get it forward and hoofing it up the field generally gives it straight back to the opposition). The back line had a few too many touches and thought they had more time than they did which escalates the tensions of those watching.
