Crowds - The thread of Australian whining
Grim times, grim measures.
I think we need to bring out the bouncy castles, face painting and novelty one-off strips.
Perhaps also something for the kids.
And more fridge magnets.
And half time bed making competitions. They were a winner.
Cheerleaders ftw
Interesting article...

I think we're wrong to assume all football players want to be live football spectators.
Actually, just as many hardcore Phoenix fans don't or have never played football or watched football on TV
I think partly there's needs to be more focus on how great going to live sport is. That's partly about winning, partly about feeling connected to the team and partly about the match day experience - all of these can be improved on
You're right, but I still think the gap between 18,000 registered players in Wellington (plus their families) and a 7-8,000 average attendance for the Nix is worth properly investigating. In fact, your observation that not all of the 8,000 currently going to watch the Nix also play football just makes the size of the gap even greater, so even more worth investigating.
If half of the Nix current home average crowd also play football (and even that may be an over-estimate) then that's only 22% of Capital Football's registered players. Shift that to 30% and you get an extra 1,500 spectators.
That said, winning regularly at home, which also greatly increases your chances of making the playoffs where the big money home games are, is still by far the most significant factor in the equation.

Non-football people will come only in proportion to 'the entertainment factor' on offer. You only have to look at the wild success of rugby sevens. A marquee player might do it, as JV says - if he's good enough/exciting enough. Another Ifill needed at least. I reckon it's about time for Welnix to give it a go rather than bleat about no-shows.
To be fair not many people go to the sevens to actually watch the games do they? I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "the games were awesome" but I hear most people I know who go saying things like "I spent most of the time on the concourse."
people have realised they can now get pissed in costumes and act like dickheads on courtenay place during the sevens and they don't actually have to spend $100+ on a ticket to do so.

This is an important point too. People would come just to see Paul play knowing he was probably the fav to score in any given game. And even when he didn't score he was still exciting to watch with his assists and runs past 2-3 opposition players into the box..
they were trending downward before 9s.
they were trending downward before 9s.
my penis is trending down
The 9s are probably a new contributing factor but like Tegal said the trend pre-dates the 9s. I'm sure they will continue to amplify the the trend though.

so are my moobs...
actually you have a couple of reasonable points there Steve-O
You compete with Sunday 6pm News on One which is historically, the biggest watch in NZ
The time zones are all wrong. The FFA ain't changing them anytime soon
I dont know why the Aussies wont let us have our games at 3pm. A good time for families here and the tv audience here. A good time too in Aussie, 1pm, getting people in the mood for their games over there.

I won a double pass to last weekend's game from Mojo Coffee (Thanks Mojo). I gave it to a guy at work, and he and his sone, who plays for Porirua City went along and watched the game in Aisle 30. He took me out for a coffee at Mojo today (Thanks Mojo, again) and we had a great chat.
As a result he is going to buy a Nix Six Flexi Pass. He didn't realise they existed, said he couldn't be a season ticket holder due to time commitments but that he got along to about 5 games a season. I told him about the Nix Six flexi pass, and his face lit up and he said "That's EXACTLY the ticket for me."
So that was a good result.
He also had a good idea for closing the gap between the peoiple involved in Capital football clubs who come to All Whites Games and the FU games but don't show up at Nix games.
He said have a kids only stand, that seats say 200-300 kids, say 50 metres long and 5 or 6 rows deep. A temporary seating type arrangment. Put it near half way on the Eastern side of the ground (opposite side to the dug outs)
Make access to it by booking and for ids only, with the fencing that they put up for post match autograph signing used to fence it off so the kids can get up and run aroud on the grass behind or in front fo the seats and even kick some soccer balls around with Nixie etc.
Parents get seats in the bays adjoining the area.
Players and Ernie and reseves go over pre game and say hello, shake hands, sign autographs, give out fridge magnets etc.
Give the kids a premium Nix experience, and hook the parents into this match day experience.
And if it proove popular and it sells out, great. Make it exclusive... get them booking seats in the kids only premier stand for future games before it sells out.
I thought that was genius!
Good idea but cant see it flying as isnt the area you suggested where the gold seats are, cant see them liking that .Also given we have more games on a sunday at 5,sadly i cant see it taking off with most parents.
Ive said this before and I will repeat it again.
The club need not worry about how many people are actually showing up and ask questions of the corporates who are not showing up. Surely its not too much to ask the sponsors who are given tickets as part of their sponsorship arrangement to ensure that they are actually being used.
After all its not the people who are showing up that are costing the club money!
People who arent at the stadium are not buying the stadiums food and drinks and are not enhancing the matchday experience at the ground.
I cheekily suggested that maybe she'd like to have a word with the Whittakers marketing team - everything they touch turns to gold! Sure they are selling chocolate but hey it couldn't hurt right? They are a locally based company and they have run some amazing campaigns lately - particularly the chocolate milk frenzy.
Of course - we need more creamy milks!
They are (both) a guaranteed winner

Crowds...what do people think about Welnix offsetting losses by taking it on the road again to get the numbers up?
I love my football, and having here in Wellington is just great but there's so many more "sports fans" that used to come in the early years that don't anymore. Jesus, the fever-zone used to be spread over 20-21-22 and all full all the way from the back down to the front. Now it seems to be centred around rows A H. Season ticket sales are up so must be the fellas paying for gold seats or picking silver elsewhere.
This year only one on the road 13th Dec to Eden Park, Hutt Valley Rec is still home in my book. Either way numbers need to get back up to 10k otherwise I can see more road trips. And its the penultimate season, the FFA licence is up 15/16.
Could have a had a bespoke stadium built by now, filling 10,000 every game. Shame on you Hutt residents.

I'd like tokeep the games here and try and grow a regular fan base. Last season was a classic example on how to lose fans and alienate your fan base. Regulars in the one centre might help and so too would a winning team despite what Welnix and the CEO think.

Agree. A little bit more promotion wouldn't go amiss would it? Kids go free, family deas, ernie the chicken vs Jest mascot punch up horror!

Around row 9 is where the kids that do the half time Hyundai logo sit currently as well as some other families. They all go out, do the logo, and get junk food. Most of the time they run around, slight the oposition, or complain how bored they are.
