Here is an example typical of the kind of amateurish stupidity you get from officials at events like the Pacific Games:

Pacific Games Committee chief executive Andrew Minogue said New Zealand had previously complained about the schedule of games and said it was too strenuous.
"We went back and checked and found that Olympic qualifiers had previously been played in more strenuous conditions," he added.

Er... to have been more strenuous, teams in the past would have to have played games every day with no break in-between.
These people really don't have a clue. Earlier in the week the PNG Minister of Sport claimed that it was quite normal for international football tournaments to schedule five games in ten days.
Total crap of course - at the u-20 World Cup in NZ, teams played five games in 14 days (the teams who made the quarter-finals).
It's standard at FIFA tournaments to have two days between matches in the group stage, then three days between a team's last group game and their Round of 16 game, then two or three days until the quarter-final...
