Guyon Fernandez to Perth

Possible that we were trying to sign him and Perth hijacked the deal?

Also, new salary cap changes again just distance the haves from the have nots. Completely ridiculous. What a time to do it as well - when Brisbane can't even pay their current wages, Newcastle is in FFA hands and CCM are constantly hanging by a thread. Oh, and we don't even have a f*cking license renewal.

Clearly we'll be flooded with top players from Greek First Division then.

Yeah, not to mention the fact that all the big name marquees are going to the MLS now anyway.

Yeah would have made sense for him to come here, probably knows Bonevacia, etc.

They're (again) changing the rules to drive the two biggest markets. May as well chuck the rest of us out and have a six team comp with three each in Melbin and Sydknee.

A good competition needs to be sustainable - it's not simply about the biggest numbers (revenue, sponsorship, telly, whatever)... though at the moment that's all Aussie sports admins are focused on (see also: National Rugby League, Australian Football League).

And yes, wrong thread but fudge it.

Basically because we can't take advantage of them; them, City and Sydney can.

Anyway, looks like Fernandez to Perth is likely;

Look, I can see what the FFA are trying to do - favouring the Melbourne and Sydney teams to splash the cash and raise the profile of the league hopefully bringing in better revenue to share around the league rather than trying to keep the league very competitive.

Trickle down economics, the 'Nix getting trickled upon :(

Victory couldn't fit Archie under the cap so the FFA created a new rule that helps them do that. Teams like Sydney and Victory now don't need to stoop down to having a domestic marquee but can splash out on two international marquees.

We can't afford to have one marquee let alone two. Now there are half a dozen players out side of the cap whereas we only spend the cap.

The 105% of the salary cap is an interesting one. I wonder if the FFA put that in place so they can spend more at the FFA Jets? SUrely the Jets were well under the cap last year?

Jets wouldn't have been far under the cap. They had Flores, Steele (from the MLS), Montano, Neumann and some Korean defender.

As for the changes to the cap, I think a lot of them make a lot of sense. I think it is good that loyalty is encouraged and teams are rewarded to develop youth players. However, these changes should have come with a reduction in the salary cap. I don't like the increased length of the guest player though. It basically gives some teams 3 marquees.

Did they have Flores last year? I honestly can't recall as they had so much churn but I thought it was the year before.

Edit: Just checked they did have him, but released him to another club mid season. With the amount of mid season departures which were terminated surely they dropped below the cap.

Surely they were actually below the cap minimum (of 85%) and squad minimum at one point during the season?

Does the cost of terminating a contract count in the cap? Then surely the jets woulda actually been over it

Yeah I'd imagine so, but some of the terminations were for undisclosed contract breaches or released to other clubs (Flores, Griffiths) so could have been mutual.

I strongly suspect that we are not going to sign Guyon whatsisface, on account of Perth Glory getting him.

I just hope this wasn't the signing Ernie was talking about.

I'm still waiting for the press conference to announce our license extension - that was meant to be before the end of last season IIRC

Maybe we tried to register a two year contract with the A league and they knocked it back saying you only have one more year, what the fudge do you think you are doing?

Two reasons I can think the license extension hasn't been confirmed yet:

1) They are waiting till the start of the season for publicity

2) They are playing contract extension chicken with the FFA and both sides think the other will give in before it goes bad. This could turn ugly if both sides are adamant the other will give in first.

Yep and you have to wonder why a player would sign for a club without a licence to play in their competition. The club would never admit it but i cant see how prospective players would retain their interest in coming when they find out about the licence issue.

FFA is above all a business, and if something (Phoenix) ain't broke they will not try to remove it, least the whole apple-cart falls to pieces. We like to write ourselves off but the truth is we are one of the most financially stable teams in HAL at present.

FIFA largely do not care in the sense that they will approve whatever FFA and AFC agreed on. It is only AFC that I worry about.
