Very uncomfortable with the way the A-League / FFA are effectively making signings for certain clubs. How is that fair to the clubs that don't get such assistance? What other league in the world would you see the CEO of the league itself talking up a signing of one club? Surely it is the club that would do this?

It makes a mockery of the 'competition'.

If they really cared about Phoenix 'metrics' they'd get Ronaldinho to Welly! And not for another team. While it's ok to see these players in the flesh, I don't go to see them, I go to see Nix beat the team they're playing for.

Especially subsidising City of all clubs. If any owners in the comp can afford marquees it's those guys

Central Coast Mariners will begin interviews for their next head coach as early as next week, but the club's chairman has ruled out allowing Tony Walmsley's replacement the full salary cap to spend on the squad.

It's bit silly - he's contracted for a certain amount of time and gets paid a set amount for that time. If City want to pay him out of the contract at any point they have to pay the total contract value. So really this "pay cut" is just that the payment for his whole contract gets paid mostly in the first year rather than spread over the whole term. Probably doing it for some accounting breaks that mean that he doesn't count as a guest next season so City can bring in some other fading star

You can only have a guest for 1 year, so by doing this they get 3 marquees for two years as he falls under the cap once his guest stint is over. Just another example of Melbourne City flouting the intention of the rules.

Knowing the Roar of recent years isn't it just as likely that they didn't pay him? :P

With Adelaide signing those 2 kids, they have a squad of 17 guys. Only 1 more visa spot to use. They might really struggle with the quality they have lost this off season.

[Edit: just remembered they are effectively a 16 man squad with Marrone tearing his achilles in the grand Final]

WSW have a ton of defensive options, not a surprise they might be trying to offload him. For months there had been rumours of him going to china but that window is now closed.

If the FFA were actually seriously concerned about teams rotting the salary cap system this way there'd be an easy fix - just divide the total salary amount over the course of the contract by the number of years and use that.

The FFA's constant erosion of the integrity of the salary cap to placate the rich clubs makes a mockery of the whole concept of the cap in the first place. It's a massive danger to the future of the competition to continue to create a rich/poor divide in a league with only 10 teams

You mean the Melbourne City A League, kindly sponsored by Manchester City? Not even the Victory or Sydney City can match it. Or perhaps the FFA Roar could........once they pay the unpaid wages.

Intrigued to see how he goes, he has a good scoring record but in the Finnish leagues. Last Finn striker to come here was Juho Mäkelä, who flopped at Sydney and he was an international rep, whilst Kokko isnt.

ADELAIDE United is waiting for an answer from a potential star marquee signing.

United’s general manager of football Ante Kovacevic, says the club will in the next 48 hours find out if it has secured the international striker who played for his country in the qualification stage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The striker has played for years in Germany’s Bundesliga, is in his thirties and will become Adelaide’s most significant signing in the history of the club — if the Reds can pull it off.

Kovacevic would not name the striker who is now considering the marquee offer but revealed he is not Spanish.

Kovacevic also revealed the club was close to signing an experienced Australian winger to bolster its squad this week.

The Jets will take three youth team players on their tour of China and leave senior-squad members Mitch Cooper, Andy Brennan and Radovan Pavicevic at home.

Coach Scott Miller opted to use Brymora in front of Cooper, Brennan and Pavicevic against Victory, and he spoke last week of “possibly moving some players out”.

Confirmation that those three players, all of whom have a year to run on their contracts, will miss the China tour suggests they will have few opportunities under Miller.
