Really fascinating peek behind the curtains this week at Sarpreet Singh’s situation thanks to a Bayern Munich club website interview with Jochen Sauer who is the boss of the Bayern Munich academy. He touched upon the situations of a number of academy players during that chat, here’s what he specifically had to say about Sarpreet...
“Sarpeet recently had a great year with us. He trained with the professionals and performed really well in the third division. In the summer the opportunity arose for him to take the next steps in his career at a traditional club like Nuremberg. But you never know beforehand whether that will work or not. He didn't get the playing time there that he imagined. Nuremberg is currently in a difficult phase in terms of results, so it is even more difficult for every player. We brought Sarpreet back and are now trying to give him the games he needs to get back to his level before the Nuremberg move. We are very confident that he will now help us again and get a personal boost.”
Good yarns. Singh didn’t play this week for the reserves though, he was listed as being “sick”. This just a day or two after his birthday, hmm. Perhaps a couple too many slices of birthday cake?

watched this game, and his role with BM II is so much more positive than at Nuremberg. He's more ball-dominant and creative rather than being asked to play deep, only passing sideways and not utilising any of his strengths. Had a good game overall, had a rocket of a volley saved by the keeper late on

What a disaster of a season it's been since Kovac got the boot. It would seem now that there is no chance of first team action, which is a real shame. What to do for Singh this off season? Move or stay in Reserves?

To be fair, it was under Hansi Flick that Sarpreet made his two Bundesliga appearances (82nd minute substitute vs Werder and start against Freiburg), he only made friendly appearances under Kovac, and he didn’t do preseason with Bayern for this season as he was with Nürnburg.
But yes, today’s game against Union was his best chance to be back playing in the Bundesliga, as Bayern rotated heavily due to a combination of a slight injury crisis and wanting to rest players ahead of the Champions League second leg. Trouble is I think he’s viewed as a Müller-type player, but Musiala has been better, as well as four years younger. Bayern picked 5 reserve players for today’s match day squad, but Singh stayed with the reserves and only came off the bench for them.
Singh did miss Bayern II’s game last week so perhaps he’s been slightly injured, but yes I think he should be looking for at least a loan, especially if Bayern II get relegated to the Regionalliga (they sit one point above the relegation zone). Some Bayern II teammates from last season have left to the Eredivisie (Wriedt at Willem II and Batista Meier at Heerenveen), and others are featuring in the Bundesliga (Musiala, Richards, Jeong and Dajaku), so there’s definitely places to go from Bayern II, even if the Bayern first team is a step to high.

Wouldn't be surprised if Bayern look to offload him this European summer. Get the impression they've given up on him as a prospect for the first team and he's probably too old to be hanging around the second team next season. Selling him to a Dutch or Belgian club for a fee hundred Euros would be a good outcome for both Singh and Bayern.
That's certainly a possibility. The problem with with that of course being that whoever might be looking at him, would do so on the basis of what he did last season, as this year has been a bit of a write off.
Bayern are business savvy and will look for a good outcome, having paid decent coin for him. Sarpreet Singh followed his penalty goal against Ingolstadt last week with the start against Hansa Rostock, logging 84 mins before he was replaced in BM2’s final substitution... but he wasn’t able to spark a result as the lads went down 1-0 to a 45th minute John Verhoek goal, despite a couple agonisingly close calls.

He had a decent crack in the first half running onto a loose ball in the box and absolutely smashing it towards goal but the keeper was in the right spot to palm it away. Would have stung for sure.
However a lot of the play happened behind him as BM2 had a lot of possession but turned it over cheaply a few times too often and thus left themselves exposed at the back. It was a chance like that which led to the goal. Verhoek’s finish on the spin was nice from about thirty metres out but he had an open goal to shoot into after keeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann rushed out and didn’t win the ball.

Scherff would eventually be sent off for a second bookable offence right at the end... but that happened with no time left for Bayern to take advantage.

How do you think he compares to Uli and how would he have gone if he'd stayed in the a-league? I know he had a rough loan spell, but the Nix had a disrupted year too.
That move when he hits the cross-bar is very Uli-esque actually and he looks to have gone up a couple of levels in conditioning since leaving the Nix.

In my opinion, Uli would still have the upper hand. Singh with better passing and vision than Uli, and much-improved positioning, defensive capability, physicality and shooting since leaving the Nix. Uli's the better finisher, with better touch and dribbling and seems to have more control over his movement. I think both lack the decision making you'd ideally want.
A very useful comparison though - the two followed very similar trajectories in their early careers. At Singh's age, Uli had already suffered through a couple average loan spells from Chelsea and until his time at the Nix had never really had the chance to show his capability to control a team. Uli had his real breakthrough at Córdoba in the 13/14 season in Spain's second tier aged 22, and would surely have continued his momentum if Chelsea cared at all about his development. I hope Singh finds his Córdoba - he's a system player who needs the team to run through him, much like I feel Uli is, and I have full faith he'll blossom given the right choice of club (Nuremberg egregiously misplayed him, for the record).

That is Fiete Arp, a kid who came through at Hamburger SV, and became one of their youngest ever Bundesliga goal scorers when he scored in 2017 at the age of 17. He went to the same U17 World Cup in 2017 that Cacace, Just, Mata etc went to and was rated as one of the best young strikers in Germany. However, Bayern offered him a contract worth 5 million euros a season to bring him to Munich so he joined roughly the same time as Sarpreet, but has failed to make a senior appearance at Bayern yet, and his contract value makes him extremely unappealing for clubs to loan him as well. He’s, unfortunately, very much become ammunition for Germans to accuse Bayern of ruining youngsters, but he’s still only 21 so can still very much make steps towards the Bundesliga.

Bayern have come out and said they won’t be dropping any players down from the first team for their remaining 3. Liga games. They had considered allowing players like Nübel (GK), Roca (DM), Douglas Costa (winger on loan from Juve), Nianzou (CB) and Sarr (RB) (essentially everyone struggling for game time in the Bundesliga) but decided against it. I’m not certain but the unfairness of moving the players down may have been a reason against it.
Assuming they do go down, they will be back in the Regionalliga Bayern, which has 18 teams, of which all are based in the Bavaria state. Promotion back becomes a bit more complicated as the Regionalliga has Nord, Nordost, West and Südwest divisions also, amounting to 91 teams in total, and of the 5 leagues, 3 winners get automatic promotion and the other 2 playoff for the last promotion place. By next season it should be better Covid-wise, but this season’s Regionalliga Bayern is just a continuation of last season’s suspended league, but the second wave has meant that the league has been suspended since November until later this month, meaning the current season started in July 2019, as the level of the league does not qualify it for the exceptions given to the top 3 leagues, so very much less than ideal for Singh or any other player needing weekly games to develop.
Bayern definitely want their reserves in the 3. Liga though, as it has helped develop many young players, but this season has been unsuccessful because of how well they did last season, as all the players have essentially left, meaning lots of the next generation of young kids who aren’t 3. Liga quality yet are being thrusted into it.
