Woud coming out of his box again because he'd watched Ding get done a couple of times one on one with Romanian attacking players, Lewis sprinting to cover a header Ding had gone up for in case he didn't make it, commentary noting "he had no idea" where the player he was supposed to be marking was (just like the first Honduras goal), and he always seems to go for a first touch pass, check back and then pass backwards.
Callan Elliot may have copped a yellow, but he was by far a better player at right-back than his replacement. His partnership with Champness looked really promising too. It's interesting to watch a coach sub on players that actively unbalance a team, and result in worse play - but Hay did it.
We played a dull but effective game against S. Korea, brightened by Wood's winner which seemd to galvanise our side, an error strewn game against Honduras, where we just seemed to lose the ability to cut through them after our second goal, and one good half where we seemed to test Romania and then one really horrible half of not trying to score at all and hanging on at the end.
Yeah, we've qualified, but this style of play isn't winning us any new supporters - and seems to involve our players playing below their individual level of ability to suit the gameplan.

You can probably put the second half against Romania down to lethargy. Hay has some calls to make to freshen up the squad for Japan.

I understand completely. The AW's / OW's are my number one team and I would never miss a game that was available to me. But Hudson made me think this way and the first two games of the Olympics had me considering it again and also hoping like hell that none of the kids I coach would be watching these games.
Hopefully we are positive on Saturday. I think we may have no choice, as we are light on good defenders.

Singh's decision then! He could've stayed with the recently relegated Bayern reserves, but chose to prioritise his career. Hard to begrudge him that.

Devoting an entire paragraph to Dane Ingham is a bit harsh. I guess you see what you want to see but I honestly don't think he was bad, looked good going forward and apart from missing a header (something every player bar Wood had done), wasn't exposed at the back. Looked better than Cacace, who was playing like he was doing the absolute bare minimum not to get injured.
Anyway, much better game. Both CB's were quality but Stensness certainly stood out. Bell looked like he could actually live up to some of the hype around his technical ability. A shame we lacked any sort of adventure after finding out Korea was 3 goals ahead at half time.

Can fully understand the annoyance at how we played, but at least we're playing games. We've been starved of NZ football for a lot of years now, no way am I missing this, even if we get battered 9-0.

To be fair there are probably some basketball forums where they can't believe there is a football tournament made up of under 23 players, with a couple of older guys.

My guess is 1) he hasn’t been quite as bad as the pile on 2) he is playing with a bunch of players he doesn’t know so well 3) he’s not a player in the mould of Singh- he needs a 10 or wide attacking playmaker ahead of him 4) it’s horribly hot and humid and he hasn’t settled 5) he works best in combo with a player like Devlin who covers a lot 6) Korea and Honduras were better than most A league sides.

It's more simple than that. Lewis played a CAM/Attacking role for ACFC. Last season was the first time he's played a deeper more defensive midfield role.
He wasn't as good as DaVila/Piscopo at attacking, so Uffie started playing him deeper, which he did well in - probably because of his pairing with Devlin/Rufer who were more defense minded, but also because the team were better coached and had a better understanding of each other.
Personally don't think he's been as bad as people have made out, but agree he has looked disjointed.

In a modern world where so many highly paid sportsmen/women, can often be found out behaving like petulant arseholes, to me the Olympics is a fantastic 4 year antidote. So many athletes just doing their sport for the sheer love of it, and making huge sacrifices with often little financial gain, chasing their Olympic dream. I still remember canoeist Paul McDonald coming to my small town high school in the late 1980s, and how pumped we were after as kids to get out there doing any kid of sport.
In an age of rising obesity this 4 yearly gig, is great in just showing kids there's all sorts of sports out there they can give a go. Why you would only watch the football, when there is already a suffocating amount of it. I just don't get.
Though it's great to finally see a senior NZ mens team in action, you could question what football is even doing at the Olympics. For me I'd definitely scrap golf and tennis who already have their grand slams.
