And more signings yet...

Sure it's gonna be a young and inexperienced squad with real learning to do, but there's some quality and potential in there. All three of these having repped age-group teams for Aus - and that's no easy task to do. Starting to get real excited about this season!

Jeepers. Don't get me wrong I'm looking forward to backing this team.
But the three other signings by other teams in the ALW this week are international imports. 2 straight out of the NWSL in USA and the other from the top flight Norway league.  And we keep signing teenagers....
Average age of our squad must now be 18 or 19. With only 2 more to come.
Expecting other teams to announce NWSL imports soon as well as there league is just finishing up.
Am looking forward to supporting this team. We have a good core of players and heaps of potential but results expectations are in the lower range.

Press conferences so far suggest a similar feeling inside the camp. This is a development team for 2023, afterwards the focus changes to winning. I think this means we should expect a lot of youth until after the world cup.

It'll be an interesting experiment then. There certainly were some more seasoned NZers they could have picked that would have been capable at this level. The girls there do look like they are technically good players and deserve to be there in there own right. But do they need more experienced players around them to help them at this stage of there development? I guess now that all fall on the coaches?.  Going to be fascinating.

Definitely will be fascinating! Imagine the start will be tough as they find their feet in the pro league but these players are the best of the new players coming through and its not as if there has been a legacy of success from the Ferns of recent years so good on NZ football giving the youngsters an opportunity!

Didn't Anna Green make herself unavailable? Perhaps Longo as well?

As mentioned by others, for older players getting 3-4 months leave from your job to up sticks to Aus, for pretty low wages in the ALW, could be unattractive.

Green definitely and Robertson declined.
They are contracted from end of October til early April so more like 6 months + so yep a decent stint!

This excellent survey of the young talent in the side by Niche Cache has really sparked my interest. Good summaries of the players, along with video of their highlights:
https://theniche-cache.com/football/2021/11/1/get-to-know-the-wellington-phoenix-womens-inaugural-kiwi-contingent
I'd forgotten how good some of these young players are.
This piece reminded me of how good striker Kelli Brown has been in national age group sides and the national league for a few years now.
Kelli Brown's contender for "Goal of the Tournament" at the 2018 FIFA u-17 Women's World Cup.
https://twitter.com/WgtnPhoenixFC/status/1450294425742036992
Also Grace Wisnewski from the same u-17 national side & Brown's teammate at WaiBOP, with her two goals clinching third place vs. Canada:.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIMDOU6VcwI
And I'm looking forward to seeing striker Te Reremoana Walker for the first time, having scored some crackers for the Newcastle Jets youth side:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuZdZT2cbC8&feature=emb_logo
Also, Kate Taylor from my local team, the Pride proved a reliable centre-back playing every game last season in the national league aged only 17.
Fellow Pride player Alyssa Whinham had a breakthrough season last summer, starting most games, including the Final, in central midfield where she was a key player, although only 17 at the time.

To me this sums up the value of the Phoenix Women side - here's one of our most promising young strikers of the last five years or so who clearly has been capable of playing at a level higher than our own national league but hasn't got the breaks due to the pandemic and injury struggles.
She wouldn't have been on the radar of the Aussie sides but now she gets a great chance to fulfill her potential and make her case for Ferns selection in a postion  they are short of depth in.
She always impressed me when I saw her playing against the Pride.

On Ferns selections it will be interesting when they shortly announce the squad for the games against Korea at the end of the month whether or not they consider some young up and comers who are now in Aus for A League  - as they can now fly out / fly in quarantine free?

Can non Australian citizens (fully vaccinated) fly into Australia from say Sth Korea, without having to quarantine? Not sure they can yet. Maybe with NSW they can, but unsure with the other states.

Certainly doubt is the case with WA, QLD & SA.

Of course most NZ ALW players will be based now in NSW, with the Nix in The Gong.

one way bubble from NZ opened just recently, so we can fly there without quarantine but not yet the other way around.

I meant Sth Korea, as that is obviously where the Ferns are playing. Edited my earlier post.

yeah I've kinda assumed that if they are open to us travelling from NZ then they will likely have some bubble arrangement with South Korea and the rest of Asia.

Satchell and Steinmetz are based in NSW.
Wilkinson, Stott, Van Der Meer and Bunge are in Victoria.
Anton is in WA. So no chance there.
Don't think any of the current Nix players are quite ready for a call up to NT.

IMO for the next 18 months they will look at blooding new talent ahead of 2023.
It would be awesome to see some younger ones get a go!

Just thinking back. Who on here would've thought that one day Wellington would have a professional men's team?? And then to add a Women's team as well. 20 years ago, not a shark show in hell. Auckland were just trying to sort out their effort. And here we are in 20/21 and it's actually happening! Awesome.

Never really thought about this, we can't sign Aussies under the age of 18 cuz FIFA doesn't allow u18s to make international transfers even tho we are in the same league.

Even odder when that team is based in the country she calls home!

So Lisa de Vanna signed with Perth. I was quietly hoping she would be a surprise final Aussie signing for WPW.

She is an ultra competitive personality, in some ways it might have been good but I don't think in a developmental team it would have been a totally positive experience for all involved.

As a result, the Phoenix are set to have the youngest and least-experienced squad in A-League Women by some distance, and the bar will be set very low. A Perth Glory side in a similar position finished last without a win last summer, and if the Phoenix can better that effort, it will be regarded as impressive.

Not one to fear monger but didn’t an Australian women’s NBL side based out of ChCh fold in a season?

See Nix have a min 2 yr partnership deal with NZF, and surely as 2023 WWC draws near commercial opportunities will pop up. But for the now, opportunity for some company to be a hero.
