Who do you guys think has been the best commentator for the Phoenix? The current one is obviously Piney who I think is good, although I do miss Dewhurst at times. I also prefer De Jong with Piney rather than Spoonley.

Really? When he was commentating some Phoenix games with Piney I thought he was kind of meh. I didn't mind him though when he was one of the presenters in the build ups before the All Whites friendlies last year.
The only Australian A-League commentators I like are Simon Hill and Max Homer. Homer is probably a controversial choice but I think he keeps the game exciting with the energy in his voice. Also didn't mind Brenton Speed but we can't forget Mike Cockerill as well.
Are they from the NSL days?
Never mind they were both English commentators, I'm such an idiot. :)
They're all pretty average. De Jong - rambles for too long about irrelevant things and talks while important action is evolving, Dewhurst - Monotone, too many stats and irrelevancy and failure to commentate on the actual game, Piney - is alright, but tends to be a bit all over the place (stats, some actual in-game commentary, etc), Spoonley - brings a bit of excitement and a fresh perspective, but maybe still a bit raw. Spoonley is probably the best of the bunch for me.
Overall, I think the Aussie commentators are much better, and that's saying something.
I prefer Spoonley out of that NZ bunch, by quite a way.
Bosnich could be a dick but I always found him entertaining and is the only Aussie comentator I missed from the ones they got rid of. His goal keeping analysis of Sail (and Paulsen earlier in the season) would of been interesting.
Spoonley is way better than De Jong and Dewhurst. I'd love to see him join Piney.

I think he offers a decent point of difference and at from a players point of view, de jong and dewhust are just too stats heavy, the distract from the game.
I like commentators that call the game and call the action.
I agree De Jong is too stat heavy and tends to talk over the action with overly long analysis.
Piney is great especially his descriptions of key moments in games. And is the best around in NZ, but have noticed he too of late is more and more wanting to fill all the gaps with stats. A little bit of that is ok but not at the expense of actually commentating the game. Hope he pulls the stats back a bit.
Spoonley has been a breath of fresh air and I think its important that new commentators are introduced from time to time to offer new perspectives.
Piney and Spoonely currently the best combo for me.

Piney has always been stat heavy, it comes from being a radio commentator for years and not wanting there to be any dead airtime. But, the flip side of of that experience is he's extremely well prepared, far better than most other A-League commentators with his knowledge of both teams.

Brian Moore & Gerald Sinstadt. ;)

De Jong is a brilliant cure for insomniacs. He can put you asleep within 5 minutes. Ngata with Pine although Pine still hasn't gotten away from being a Radio man. You don't need the constant running commentary. Let the pictures tell the story.
If in doubt, mute the sound and provide the commentary and crowd sound effects yourself.
There's a silliness or cheeky aspect to Spoonley's presence that I really enjoy. It may just be that he's a bit younger than his colleagues. As a neutral or an opposition fan I'm sure they must drive you up the wall but there's something about the sheer passion and unabashed excitement for everything NZ Football that Piney and Spoonley share that I can't help but get just as excited and hyped up as they do when they are together in the comms box.
De Jong voice makes you fall asleep and not to mention he constantly butchers players name, especially foreigners.. He called Tomer Hemed “Tomy Hamud” and Davila he called “Dovila” i am sure its his strong kiwi accent but it really is quite poor, like he doesn’t make much of an effort. I think analysis is lacking amongst NZ football commentators, I remember the last game in NZ vs the Mariners, it was 50 minutes build up of how good it is to have the Nix back home and nothing on the actual game, even at half time, the talk was how great the crowd is… while i get the emotion of it all, it was quite apparent then commentators and hosts had little knowledge of the game, from the tactical point of view =( whereas you get that from the aussies.. not all but some
I remember last season post the WSW game at EP, in what would have been a gutting loss for the Wanderers, as it meant their season was over (and really they should have won), a grinning Goran Paladin asked I think Keanu Baccus
as a first qtn “how great is this crowd”.
Embarrassing & awkward question in the circumstances. Ironically Paladin was born in Parramatta.
