cna't see the Aussies getting passed France of Denmark, they might push Tunisia, but that wont be much help to their hopes of getting out of the group.
Tunisia beat Japan 3-0 in a friendly in Tokyo back in June. Understand was an experimental Japanese lineup, but 3 losses for Australia wouldn't surprise.
But hope they do well. Never understand the anti Socceroos sentiment by some Kiwis. This ain't their cricket team. Arnie's a good dude. But then I've lived in Aus alot last 15 years.
it's just Aussies in sport full stop that I can't stand - it doesnt help that they can literally get given a rule book and in 10 years time they are challenging the world (The money and support their teams get is insane). Jealosy maybe, but I really dislike the aussie attitude.

Yeah I agree. I only dislike their cricket team. Always liked their football team, hoped they did well at any World Cup apart from 2010, was happy for them when they won the Asian Cup.

I think even though Kiwis know how much larger Australia's population is compared to us, we still just generally get sick of them consistently beating us in pretty much every sport apart from rugby union and football is no different.
All Whites fans are probably jealous or sick of seeing Australia making it through to five consistent WCs starting from 2006 to now while we've only reached one in that period of time. That again though just comes down to Australia's population and the thousands more footballers that are developing or waiting in the wings. Plus being in the AFC obviously gives them easier access to harder opposition way more often than us, that's not me agreeing with the discussion about NZ joining the AFC though.
Personally, I don't like the Socceroos, but I don't despise them. I respect their 2006 WC team and how well they did.
On a side note, I'm guessing Kiwis don't like Australia's cricket team due to that underarm bowling incident or is there another reason? I don't really watch the Blackcaps or cricket as I find it more fun to actually play it.

It's Australia, I think it all just boils down to the competitive nature between the two countries, regardless of what sporting code is being played.
Personally I like Australia as a country, having spent a bit of time there, and holidaying quite often (well before all this covid crap) but as soon as it comes to sport, all bets are off!

Yes, you can't have followed international cricket much over last 30 odd years, to ask why the Baggy Greens are disliked by all other nations. The underarm, just one in a plethora of unsavoury incidents lacking class.

Can't believe I forgot about that ball-tampering incident, and that was only a few years ago. That's the only other incident I know of though, my knowledge of cricket is just nowhere near as strong as football and a couple of other sports.

the recent ball tampering is just the tip of the iceberg of things the Aussies have done/said on the field. Alot of it sed to fall under "comeptitive spirit" but now it is monitered by the umpire - I'm referring to the sledging which bordered on racist abuse! instead of just sledging the player for things that occurred on the field they would talk/insult the oppositions wives/families - utterly disgusting bunch of players (this goes across many decades as well) - all teams engaged in it to a point, but the Aussies were/are just filthy.
I am still seething at how they scraped through against Peru, who were vastly superior, but didn't know how to put in the killer blow. Almost diametrically opposed to the NZ - Costa Rica situation. Double Whammy. Normally I'm OK with them doing 'fine' and representing the region, but this time I'd like to see them slammed. Allez les Bleus Red & White Dynamite Tunisie! Tunisie! Tunisie!
They fap on a lot about their players, without doing a lot on the world stage. And their qualification route…eck. What a mess.
On the other hand, Devlin. On the other other hand- Grella and whoever it was before we went to the WC in 2010. And the idea that a squad of seemingly 15/16 v a squad of 30 odd in two games in 3 days is an even contest. And there’s no one like Schwarzer or Aloisi J, though. Leckie’s never quite got there.
I’m split on the cricket too. So many Aussie cricketers I’m a fan of and also some I enjoyed watching lose. Vettori would have loved a 3rd umpire against them earlier.
Feel that, as crucial as my support is to them, I can probably wait and see how they go and decide. Arnie’s okay, but he’s not Ange, who collaborated so well with Kosta and Marco R and played objectively amazing club football.
Just can’t believe Tilio’s at a WC. We had him in our pocket for 3 games and then let him out. Fenton, Surman, Pennington, Elliot. Not the world’s best. He’s not that special with a bit of discipline and concentration.
If the Nix were doing better I think I could support the ‘Roos more easily! Pity on our crushed adversaries. If we beat them and they then beat Messi etc.
Anyway come on the WC! Soccer/Football is dead. Long live football!
holy shark! the world has turned upside down, Aussie strike first and lead France 1-0 within 10 minutes. Looks like the french defender has injured his knee pretty seriously too
Giroud moves equal with the great Thierry Henry with 51 International goals for his country. Can he take the outright lead with a bit more yet to play in this one.
Guess the aim of these last 20 odd minutes for Aussie will be to not let it blow out any further. It was all looking so promising for them just over an hour ago...
I guess this result will please a few of the Oz haters. People with a chip on their shoulder because we did not make the WC or others that are jealous of aussie sporting success. Australia were never going to win this and made too many mistakes which cost them goals. They we OK until 2-1 and seemed to lose confidence. Hopefully they will do better in the next two games. For me I hope France don't win this WC.
What an achievement it would be for Giroud to overtake a legend in the likes of Henry in what is most likely his last ever World Cup. That is unless he keeps playing until the next World Cup. He’ll be nearly 40 by then but you never know.
You'd think Giroud will be looking to take any opportunity that comes his way against Denmark or Tunisia to break that record.
Atkinson will be having Mbappé nightmares for the rest of his days. Surprised Arnold did not react and sub him or give him more protection, he was getting shredded. Predictable result. Huge gulf in quality between the sides but nice goal by Oz. France have a remarkable depth of players. They were missing six starters, including, Benzema, Varane, Kanté, Pogba. There B team could probably make the semi’s. The one touch interplay between Griezmann, Mbappé, Dembeli was often breathtaking. They will go far in this tournament.

Think France just showed they had some gears to go up when they wanted to. Breathtaking how many chances they bottled.
But they were really nervous at 1-0. Doubts were setting in.
any one know why arnold doesnt pick mclaren...i know hes only proven at a league level but mitch duke....thats a weird one....then brings on cummings ahead of him....funny the way coaches see things at timea,,,,like the nix getting slammed and sasse left on the bench..good effort by aussies not to drop their heads unlike costa rica
Australia might be able to beat Tunisia tonight but I don't see them beating Denmark, though as we've seen, there have been some surprising upsets at this WC so far.
Now they just need France to beat Tunisia, which is very likely, or draw with them. Then a draw against Denmark will be enough for Australia to go through with France. A loss for France would dash Australia’s hopes.

Still favour either Denmark (who should beat the Socceroos) or even Tunisia to go through. Both the Danes & Tunisia have 1 pt.
The French will likely start a weakened side (leave a few stars on the bench) against the motivated Tunisians.
France (6pts, 4 GD) basically have top spot in the group already wrapped up. Only Socceroos (3 pts, -2 GD) can catch them on GD and would require a 6 goal turnaround. It's warm in Qatar so why not rest a few guys if you can.
Plus Group D is matched with Group C (Poland, Argentina, Saudi Arabia & Mexico). And any of those Group C teams could still finish 2nd. Argentina are most likely the team the French would want to avoid, but if they finish top in their pool, and the Argies are 2nd - that's the matchup that will happen.
Group D play their 3rd pool games earlier this Wednesday, Group C later. So the French will start their Tunisian game with no idea who their last 16 opponent could be.
I read an article recently about how he was on the verge of giving up on pro football after failing to land a contract with the Mariners, then someone helped change his mind, that someone being Graham Arnold. So there's a lot of history between Duke and Arnold and a lot of mutual respect.
Also, hats off to Arnold for managing to eke out just enough quality and staying power from a bang average squad to both get them to the WC and to now have within one decent performance of becoming the first ever Oz side to make the last 16.
Arnie's has embraced a real siege mentality - 'us against the world'. That's after alot of the Aus media wrote off the team, and some ex Socceroos heavily criticised him.
That can work (or backfire) if your team is otherwise a bit limited compared to other sides. Was a gutsy win against Tunisia, with about 75% of the crowd Tunisian fans. Harry Souttar was immense.

You mean ‘first ever’ since 2006?
Oops. Selective amnesia perhaps? That penalty still rankles....
