If I had been a betting man I would have lost my dough on these two games.
The best I would have given Oz was a draw which would have seen them through.
Glad for Arnie as he is a good bloke and has copped a lot of flack lately.
From day one I could not see Australia progressing out of the group.
I am still smiling thinking about one or two people that will be gutted about this result.

pre-tourney I wanted the Aussies to fail, just cos its them, along with Costa Rica cos they took our spot. Now though I'm just enjoying the upsets and shock results!

Huge result for Australian football. It's all the talk here in Aus today.

No matter the result against Messi & Co, should give the A League a nice boost, once it restarts. 8 of the 11 starters today for the Socceroos play or have played in the ALM.

did the Kiwi ref screw up in deciding that Griezmann was offside? He was when the cross came in, but by the time the Tunisian defender made contact with the ball he looked to be onside...... I see that France have complained and lauched an investigation.

I reckon the goal should have been allowed.

so do I, listening to the commentary duing that long minute they were wondering if Griezmann being off side had effected the defence's chance to clear the ball ad I dont think he impacted that at all. He stood still let play go by him, the defender heads the ball, albeit it poorly and under pressure from a french attacker, and it falls to Griezmann, who has moved maybe a fott this hole time and he shoots.

Socceroos will definitely have the crowd against them for their last 16 tie. Watching replay Poland verus Argentina, and game might as well be in Bueno Aires. Massive Argy support.

I thought their aging side may struggle at this WC, but they look hard to beat now. No more daytime hot kickoff times should help them. All over the Poles in the first half. Only Szczęsny & some luck keeping it 0-0.

Socceroos will be under the pump from the get go.

I know it's irrelevant now but had Denmark got an equaliser, Tunisia would have gone through after France made 9 changes to their team whereas Aussie played a full strength France and lost 1-4. You'd be pretty annoyed if you were an Aussie but like I said, it doesn't matter now.

I think the goal should have stood - I don't think he interfered with the ball and by the time the defender headed it, he was back on side.

The defender wasn't worried about him, was looking at the ball - so couldn't of claimed it IMO.

Wonder what the VAR said?

I am afraid the kiwi ref screwed this up. Law 1.10 of VAR protocol stipulates that if the ref restarts play, which he did, then VAR can not be reviewed for a past action. The only exception is if someone is thought to have committed a red card offence for violence etc or a mistake in identifying a player was made. This is the grounds for the French FA appeal. The general opinion in the European press is that Griezmann did not interfere with play or obstruct the keepers view and then retired back into a onside position. The defender then deliberately played the ball and Griezmann scored from an onside position. Don’t know anything about this ref. I assume he refs local amateur football and A-League. Big jump from that level to World Cup.

I've played a game refereed by Matt Conger. It was very frustrating.

Think FIFA needs to release the VAR comms. Call it a bit tin foil hat, but the opportunities for match fixing in situations like this is insane, particularly given three relatively unknown referees / VAR officials.

Huge shiite storm over this. Lots of international broadcasters cut to advertisement breaks when the kiwi ref blew to restart the game and then blew full time. Because they knew you can’t do VAR after the game has been restarted. So lots of people turned off their TV thinking game over 1-1 score line. Official complaints coming in from major international broadcasters who pay a huge amount of money to show the games. I hope this won’t become a witch hunt against the ref but this is the World Cup. You need the games refereed by the worlds best referees. Not dishing out the games to people with little or no experience of top flight football.
