It's quite frustrating watching these games. We seem to gift or give the ball away far too easily. knot in midfield in particular is bad at that. I have wondered how she would go being play as the striker role. With her speed and ability to last the game. That might be a better position for her. I like her but over the last few games, the amount of possession she gives away or loses. Satchel could be moved of the wing into a behind the striker position. That girl is fast and skilled. I think out on the wing she is under utilized.
One thing despite all the losses, not one head drops in this team, they never give up trying. I mean 2 down after 16 and they tried to play the whole game without giving up. Onwards and upwards ladies.
I agree with you around Knott. Seems to give off Rufer vibes at times, alot of sideways/backwards passing. Could do with a turn, look up or even a run at times.
When you look at a team with a squad average age of 21.7 years old, to have the mental fortitude to do this is quite impressive. But some serious work is needed around the way this team plays. ALOT of under-utilized players all over the boardLG

“Satchel could be moved of the wing into a behind the striker position. That girl is fast and skilled”
Satchel is fast but she’s definitely not skilled. Can’t look up or pass and resorts to kick and chase. A bit of a let down given the hype along with Rolsten.
I think part of it is the lack of rotation. If players actually feared for their starting spot then maybe that could be better for us?Kenyabold

Also feel like Cicco and Gomez have not been given as many minutes as they might deserve (or Kiwis who don't deserve so many are getting minutes ahead of them).
Noticed it a bit last season that we tended toward the Kiwis over the Aussies, but this season it has stood out even more, especially with how sneaky we have gotten with getting around the 5 Aussie spots. Yes of course developing Ferns and giving them time at a good level should be a priority of ours, but imo it's not on to sign Aussie players and not treat them honestly and fairly with the rest of the squad.
I thought similar last year too. And this season even more so.If we get a reputation of not playing the Aussie girls then we are not going to be able to sign any quality Aussies in the future.
Cicco and Gomez well and truly deserve sub appearances, I mean can we get worse than bottom of the table?lthomas20

that probably has to do a lot with the agreements in place with NZF, the team is largely a development/gametime squad for the kiwi world cup campaign. The league requires us to carry a certain number of "Aussies" and we've chosen then to fill the rest fo the squad with Kiwis - no imports.

Obviously it does, but it's clearly not right. If you sign them up on a contract then their gametime should correspond to ability same as everyone else. Izzy Gomez and Cicco probably could have found better teams to play for if they knew they would only be on rotation like this.
Not really sure why they'd fund the team though? I mean I've heard a few times that the owners are getting sick of the money pit that is the men's team making no return so why spend on a women's team that is guarenteed to be a massive loss?
They're never gonna be much of a draw crowd wise, there's not a lot of entertainment to be had, it's mostly just gonna be us die hards that will care enough to support.
I don't see how the team will ever exist without NZF funding.

Any successful female business women out there who are football tragics? Didn't one of the banks who has a female CEO (BNZ?) jump on last year as a sponsor for the ALW team?
Maybe some YF supported crowd funding of each invidual player next season or something would be a little help.
If the Ferns go well (get out their Group as a miminium) there will be a lot of goodwill factor around Women's football - and that could open up some new commercial opportunities. Even if the crowds alone are big, with lots of public awareness, some potential sponsors will take note. Domey will be hoping so.
All five Asian teams that have qualified have strong links to NZ. China, Japan, Philippines, South Korea & Vietnam. So with some luck, something commercial wise, might arise from them taking part.

what determines if the plan is right or wrong? if the people paying for it, ie NZF and the Nix are happy with the outcome currently (and I doubt the lack of wins is making them happy), then clearly it's working. I'm assuming that the agreement with NZF was based on the fact that the women's team would be used to get as many NZ female players back into some kind of form with decent playing time in their legs pre WC. I'm sure there will be other expectations but from what i recall that was the basic purpose of the team, almost to the point of we really not that worried about the league so much as we are getting NZ player back into the cournty so the football fern's coach can have all the players she wants to look at in one/two countries at one time.

Exactly, and ALW costs much less because salaries are way lower. So a little sick of the argument that we can't support an ALW team from that perspective.

A return flight across the Tasman, a night in the hotel, is the same wether you were male or female.

I was simply asking whether or not the owners would be willing to bankroll another team on top of the one that they already do. I don't know the answer to that.
Hopefully the team continues to be supported by NZF, I also hope that it isn't at the funding expense of the men's team that could potentially bring in some decent money with the WC.
There's no real easy way to fund a pro women's team unfortunately, sponsors will never be as interested as there's less eyeballs on it than mens and ticket revenue will be hard to come by unless all the women who play football in welly actually start showing up(all the ones I know don't and have no interest).
Hopefully the team can be stable, I want it to be, but I think they'll need to actually get some results to help that cause.
It would be insane if NZF doesn't financially support the club.
Giving an actual pro pathway in NZ for pro footballers of all genders is surely worth every cent for our governing body.
Not really tbh. Pro sports exists because there should in theory be a market for it. In sports that there isn't a market, there's no pro level.
No this doesn't always hold true, some sports get propped up by wealthy owners because they just want to do it(like the Nix).
But really if there's no interest in it then there really shouldn't be a pro level. Why does pro sports exist except for commercial reasons?
Kinda. But if NZ wants to be competitive on the world stage we need to build pathways and having full time athletes training would he a big part of their success.

But football in NZ is a bit unique. Without the Nix existing, the AWs don't beat Bahrain in 2009, and make NZF $10M, by going to the 2010 WC.
NZF should always help out the Nix where they can, within reason. With our national teams so very seldom playing in NZ (presuming things return to a 'normal' state of fudge all post this year's WWC), the Phoenix ALM & now ALW teams really are the sport's shop window/media consciousness in NZ.
NZF at least paying the coaching staff's salaries (especially if they also coach womens national age group teams in the ALW off season etc) - you'd hope would continue.

Absolutely I do hope it continues, provided it doesn't take resources away from the men's team who are the real potential money maker.
The Nix are definitely in NZFs interest to keep around, vital to the sport in the country at a pro level obviously. However, if nzf were to stop funding the women's team then I'm simply wondering whether or not the owners would continue to pump money into the team on top of the already huge losses they make with the men's team.
In my opinion the future of the Nix ladies depends a little on how well the world cup goes here, if the NT goes well it could help build a lot of interest in the Nix. The other issue is they've got to make the on field product a lot more entertaining. I have a pretty low standard for what I'd consider watchable football, I'm definitely not a eurosnob, but even then watching watching women's team struggle to pass a ball isn't exactly thrilling viewing.
There's potential there, if they get things right hopefully the sponsors will come. I hope the team gets better and stronger.
