Rapinoe missing a pen (couldn’t have happened to a nicer person) and the USWNT going out has to be the highlight of the tournament so far. Sweden GK was immense too

Old blue hair was rubbish when she came on. I shan't cry over the loss of people that treat sport as an opportunity for politics.
Sweden can cause Japan some trouble with their aerial power,as they did to Italy. This game will be very interesting.

at 38, age has caught up with her and notwithstanding the penalty miss, she played poorly when she came on.
I could not understand why Morgan was taken off as she was playing well and just prior, she had made a great run and came close from a good strike.

Get over it. Life is politics.
Sport is supposed to be above it though Idiots wear armbands and take the knee and stuff spread divisiveness and use sport to promote something thats always a personal agenda To be fair to FIFA, they have done it well, they have tried to promote unity

Is it supposed to be above it though? Sport is human and I personally do not want to see a bunch of robots on the field unable to express how they feel
Some of the greatest and most memorable moments in sport have come from people expressing very real human politics. Take for instance the 1968 Olympics black power salute which is no longer devisive but very famous.
I reckon what you have a problem with is that they're not expressing the political beliefs that you want to see.
This is also completely ignoring the fact that the majority of the political stances the players take actively encourages unity and acceptance of all walks of life. Only the people who have issues with LGBTQ+ rights seem to find it divisive. Really no different to the people who saw the black power salute and black rights divisive at the time

You started the bull* politics discussion and then even stating FIFA did great job for what the US team was fighting for years. Rapinoe is an icon in women’s sports, even with a few sharkty games and a missed penalty.
Most supporters of the US women’s teams seem to be farewelling Rapinoe, a WC Golden boot, as a legend of the game who played a little too long. It’s not a big deal to US soccer fans, but to culture warriors in a country where in Florida and elsewhere we are witnessing book bannings, teachers forbidden to mention different sexualities and punitive measures against companies that don’t toe the line.
Of those two crowds I’m very comfortable supporting a hero striker who wants to be paid properly and be herself publicly. Yes, it’s obviously a very personal agenda.
I don't really know much about Rapinoe, apart from that's she had a running social media battle with Mr Orange toupee a number of years now. That and she said she didn't mind NZ's cold/wet weather. On those 2 counts she seems a quality human. I'm to the right of centre, but if I lived Stateside (and why would yah) I'd vote Democrats every time.
On another note I noticed at the England verus Haiti game I went to in Brissy, a complete absence of Rainbow flags. Either the local LGBTQ community football fans were afraid to carry their flag, or it's just sort of a ho hum non issue post the Plebiscite, and folks just want to enjoy & focus on the football. I'd hope it's the latter, the nation having matured a bit after the drawn out gay marriage debate from a few years ago. Surprise surprise Australian life has continued on pretty normal since then. Love is indeed love, and lets move on to talking about something else.
Edit - I had feeling Nigeria could upset the English. The Nigerians are quality.
Phew what a roller coaster. I've had my two teams win a penalty shootout on the same day. How fudgeing dumb from James. Can't take the scum out of the Chelsea unfortunately.

".... a country where in Florida and elsewhere we are witnessing book bannings..." Florida? They are just damn try-hards. Only Poland is supposed to be "not socially enlightened". The rest are just mediocre copycats.

Sport isnt supposed to be above it at all. Thats a myth. I was one of those who took part in the anti springbok tour protests in the early 80s. Those protests played a small part in helping get rid of Apartheid in South Africa. That wasnt a personal agenda, NZ had been the subject of a massive African boycott of the Olympics because of our sporting ties with South Africa. Thats not a personal agenda. Taking the knee was not spreading divisiveness at all, you have that horribly wrong. Wearing armbands isnt divisive, I dont think you understand what the word divisive means. Your take on this is horribly wrong, so so wrong.
It'd be so Australian to get up and win this at home.
Honestly all power to them... I know there's this rivalry thing that goes on but it'd be pretty neat to have a winner from this part of the world, it's not like cricket/netball/rugby where they've already won it and become an established power.
