A good point. But... we will struggle to get 3 in any gane with that attacking set up.

Where's the creativity going to come from?

we asked our 8's to defend wide and our wingers and full backs to defend narrow.

the simple counter to that would have been to play wingers and/or ask full backs to overlap. that would have killed us.

rudan didn't figure it out.

Well, I'm not sure. For me they tried unsuccessfully to overlap on the flanks at the rate of about 1 a minute. How many successful crosses did they have?
Breaking us down will take a lot of figuring out.

Sure it wasn't the most captivating game of football from either side but I think the positives outweigh any negatives.

We were fully committed and got the job done defensively without any lapses or brainfades for 90 minutes. That young backline of ours really stood up to the challenge. Paulsen was a star. That same game over the two seasons we would have easily conceded three or four goals and lost our heart. It was the first game of the season, away from home in 30 degree heat and we came away with a point. Plenty to build on from there and with a chorus of yellowfever chants behind the lads next week I'm sure we'll be able to find our creative attacking flair going forward!

Well we've scored 3 away goals in the last 3 matches. We conceded 2 in the first. Seemingly that was because we couldn't cover the flanks. Hopefully that's been overcome.
Sadly the first 2 matches were friendlies, if they hadn't been then we'd have 5 points from 3 away games.
You may not like the boring boring Wellington tactics but you've got to be quite confident about getting points.

This 100% they were using the overload on the wings and trying to cross into the box. But our centre backs /Paulsen got to it first every time. Great performance.

Even the corners. By the end of the match, the corners weren't giving me butterfly's. I just thought "oh, another corner, no danger then"..

I think overall the result was satisfactory. The defense was much improved over previous seasons and looked like it will work into an effective unit. (How long has it been since we haven't shipped multiple goals in past seasons).
Early days yet.
The foundation of any sport is to have a well drilled defense, so calls for this to change or that to be different are premature. So lets be patient.
The next stage after consolidating is to  build strong links with the midfield.
I  thought the passing out as we went onto attack was pretty poor and our midfielders, whatever their roles, must be much more mobile. A hot summer in Oz  this year will require fit players who can hold onto the ball and pass with accuracy. There is a lot of work yet to do in that area.

It may be too early to say, but both Surman and Wootton looked sharp and better than previous seasons.

He needs to do exactly what Joe Gauci did over in Adelaide and sign up long term.

Hopefully whoever is managing his affairs will realise this as well.

Paulsen is still incredibly young & inexperienced for a GK. How many ALM keepers have left to have true success overseas?  Wouldn't be many. He should commit to at least 2 full seasons min with the Nix.
Get a real taste for demands of week in, week out pro football. There will be ups & downs, but he has a great chance to be the starting keeper through his Nix career.

Leaves too early, or to the wrong club and it's the disillusionment of spending a whole Euro season or more just watching on. Or being thrush in, ill prepared and having a howler aka Michael Theo, Marinovic and that's the end of your Euro opportunity. Cut throat world it can be for keepers. Having said that Paulsen looks a huge talent, just that at age 21 is no rush as a GK to leave the ALM.

FYI - Matt Ryan the best keeping export in the history of the ALM had 3 full seasons with the Mariners before heading to Belgium.

Watched the Perth game highlights. Jets corner in the 90+2 min. Sail went out to get the ball but jumped into nowhere land, Jets player is heading it in for a last minute draw.

Overall a well organized defensive effort.... Q, why all the passing back? At one point we had a 3 on 3 quick break and Ball? slowed it down turned and passed back...In retrospect a point is okay even if it was a hard watch. :-)

Not huge progression on how we played with the ball since the Australia Cup. FBs very conservative which aided our defensive effort.

It was bloody hot, with a daytime kick off. Alot hotter than Wellington at the moment. Most teams are still shaking off rust. Defensive solidity is a must have improvement from recent seasons. From there you build your game. It was bloody hot.

If the team ain't looking like scoring goals, after say Round 4, then be concerned.

Oli let in a real clanger in the last few seconds/minutes of the Perth game. Came out for a ball he was never going to get through a crowd.

1 game, 1 clean sheet, Away game at that. Job done, well done too. Great weekend for the Phoenix club!!

I think Chiefy did a great job, the tactics were spot on for where we are at right now

The centre backs were excellent individually. They were also assisted by two full backs, who never left the defensive line and defended narrow. The full backs simplified what the centre backs had to do, and man they were excellent. Surman has improved a great deal despite the lack of minutes last season.

The think Rufer was awesome, with and without the ball.

Using the 8's to defend the wide areas was cool. Using 8's in side to side manner (rather than up and down) is something a lot of the top sides in Europe do. It meant that the 'wide' forwards could defend narrow and mess with WSW's play from the middle of midfield.

Of course, if you set up like that, you get less going forward, but Chiefy had a plan for that too and I think the direct angled passes in behind from wide areas was the perfect plan for an attacking setup that was going to lacknumbers. Obviously we were always hoping to hang on and snatch one.

I'm sure this will all evolve. But I'm so delighted with the starting point!

Fortunately, all of this fascination made up for what was actually a pretty terrible game (i didn't care)

Mildly off-topic, but I was watching those old "A-League bloopers" vids and Ryan in 2010-11 was letting in howler after howler. Goalkeepers mature slowly.

Early days, bit like the women after one game, hard to see a style but it could come next week.

Don't think we offered too much going forward but defended well.

Paulsen man of the match. Hopefully not every week or that could be a telling sign!

improvement to come, good to see some kiwis running around.

Yes!
That's right.
And when we get possession the 8's are supposed to rapidly push forward. It means that we need a lot of fitness to go a full match like this from Pennington and Kraev. Especially in 30 degrees. I noted from Wyscout that Pennington ran 13 km. That was more than 2 km more than anyone else and a lot of that was in high speed bursts (very fatiguing). It asks a lot of those two guys and tough to go past 70 minutes like that. Kraev was subbed at 73 minutes.
In the Melbourne, cup match, Pennington was subbed at around 75 minutes having clearly run out of puff.
If we assume that Pennington and Kraev are very fit now hopefully this will work. Though it works better during the first half when they're still fresh. Or is probably more suited to NZ weather than Sydney weather.

After seeing the startup and the bench in front of me, I'm less optimistic :-) We gonna be destroyed, our attack is good, midfield decent but the back four will get schooled.
For the record, I don't buy the whole academy narrative from the club. There is no way the academy can produce 4-5 A-League ready players for a team and compete. They don't want/have to spend the money simple as that.

Brilliant anti-jinx :)

Unfortunately if a GK makes a bad error early, it is not unusual for the rest of their game to be a ‘mare also.
