Well, a tough game. Guess we’ll regroup and go again.

Didn't Breslin's head injury come from her heading the defender's head as well as the ball? We didn't play well enough to win that game. Caught on the break, but Mariners scored it well.

What’s happened to Micky Foster?
Very quiet, inaccurate passes, getting run around.
Exhausted from ferns duties ?

Why did we make subs with half an hour to go? I don't think we looked tired and personally i thought we were well in the game at that point. Felt like Temple made subs for the sake of subs and it back fired. We lost momentum significantly. Coach may need to take the hit for this result.

The Chloe Knott debate is an interesting one and its kinda dragged on from last season. She is a frustrating player because shes hit and miss with her performances but seems to be a player who has better output with better players around her and i think this season she looks a little better...should she come off instead of say Katie Taylor? probably not but in fairness to Temple KT can defend set pieces if need be.

Our wide players aren't up to much and our subs are bang average. It could cost us in the long run.

BUT we are playing better football there's plenty to like so far. We have a developing style and thank god we look somewhat organised for a change.

Long way to go but i think we will get better and pick up a couple results each month and get into a top4 position...and maybe win it after that....dare to dream.

Agree with this and it's what I'm noticing and finding so frustrating.  For example, it felt like we had no left back for much of that game, with Michaela Foster high and more central, presumably because that's what's been asked of her.  But I think it's making her less effective.  And Van Der Meer and Rily Foster routinely had no-one to play out to.  Or if there was someone, it was Breslin dropping deeper than Michaela Foster.  But then because we only had a back-line of two or at most three (Davidson didn't seem to get as high and as central on the right as Foster on the left), we kept getting unpicked down CCM's right hand side.  Including for the goal!  M Foster was in the opposition box, Gomez out-muscles Fraser, releases the ball to CCM's Wurigumula who steams into the empty space where we had no left back and crosses the ball for a tap-in.

Frustrating.

I think tactically we're losing here. The narrowness of the FBs is meant to a) open up passing lanes to our wide players or b) if not picked up give an option to play out in a more midfield position. I think the main problem is that the wide players are possibly to high in build up meaning that a) is not an option and CCM need only commit 2 or 3 players in a central area and basically takes out 4 or 5 of our players so b) is not effective. The high wide players has meant those counter attacking moments are more dangerous.

Totally baffling to me that some of the commentators here (and even more evidently of the men’s page) are not successful coaches in the top echelons of football. The ability to provide such incisive analysis without interacting directly with the players, without knowing what they are working on during training, and what game plan they take on to the field . . . is truly amazing.

I’m sure the Nix coaching staff are hanging on every word.

Couple of things Alfie...

1) you're assuming that some of the people commentating are not past or present coaches.

2) again assuming forum commentators do not speak or interact with club and international players....i can tell you some of us certainly do.

3) the point of the a forum is to discuss debate opinions and views on football. Thats the beauty of football we all see it through different lens...its good to challenge your own views even sometimes against them of the coach when you hear them speak.

That's right, we should have a happy clappy circle instead where we never say anything other than "good job team".

Seriously why are you even on a forum if you don't want discussion?

Michaela Foster has been a shadow of her former self outside of dead ball situations – which is possibly still a somewhat generous way of putting it – across these opening rounds and I hope that's only down to allowing her to skip much of the pre-season. Outside of any positioning issues potentially resulting from tactical adjustments or instructions, there appeared to be significant hesitation on her part to make decisions in moments consequently leading to a loss of possession.

I'm also beginning to view Kate Taylor as a net negative in the midfield and would genuinely appreciate some sort of explainer as to why she seems to remain a nailed-on starter.

Yes I agree, M Foster seems so much less effective having to go infield every time. Can she not be allowed to mix it up? Go down the line sometimes, cut inside sometimes. Then the opposition might actually have to think about defending.

it's a football forum and what  you're suggesting is that any form of critique is invalid if critic is not an expert, like film reviews if the reviewer is not Speilberg

We clearly miss someone in the midfield that can pull strings. Someone with creativity, change the tempo. Knott and Tayler are very busy tackling, pressing, but no one is able to give it some structure.

Agreed. I have said from the first game there is something not right with the structure, the full backs are not creating overlaps - we seem overloaded in midfield. Speckmaier is way too isolated. The game last night was dire and as I don't have a direct line to the coach, I don't propose to watch it again and analyze it more.
We have won 3 games ,which of course is a huge improvement, but it seems to me the structure is more of an issue than the ability of any individual player. The subs had zero impact yesterday.  Went to bed very disappointed last night, but today I'm still considering flying up for the double header!

Agree and re the subs they had zero impact but what is the point of having Lake who is a good solid centre back coming on as impact player in midfield with 10 to go?? There are better impact options not getting squad time.
Elliott hasn’t impressed since her first outing. Time to mix things up.

What’s that thing where the harshest critics are your strongest fans as they’re the ones that care? In that case across all the teams it’s been good to see so much criticism!

Yeah CCM players ran past her its not a good watch, felt a bit sorry for her really. She's not a player that will excel when the game is open up. Shes not a DCM shes been stitched up by Temple. Playing in there is just exposing her weaknesses. I think shes a good squad player...a bench back up for CB. Gives it her all to be fair.

Better send a brickbat to Fraser as well, losing possession in midfield when our defender Foster had gone high up the pitch.

Fraser is our attack -everything good comes from her. She either creates or scores. Shes going to give away the ball on the edge of the box sometimes.....thats why you have defenders in the team...to defend....we didnt defend. simple as that.

I accept that's your opinion SN and I do agree with a lot of your comments but I can't agree with your view on Taylor. She was one of our best vs Brisbane and WU. She has the potential to become a very good CDM. Her power going forward created the free kick opportunity for Fraser v WU. We missed that from her on  Saturday. Central Coast is not an easy place to go to and a number of our players seemed to lack energy against a niggly Mariners side. I don't think it's a reason for major alarm bells. Let's just put it down to a bad day and move on.

Wow the dramatic responses to one close loss is crazy. We are 5 rounds in and we've managed to equal the wins we had last season. We are only 4 points of bettering our tally from last year - clearly there has been massive improvement since the first two seasons, both in coaching and players. For me it looked like the players were struggling with the heat and maybe travel hit them all hard. Hard to know but everyone was off their game. It happens, no need to freak out and slam the team. Noone is winning the league from an average 1-0 victory. Are there things to work on - absolutley, will they be worked on - Im pretty certain Temple and co are already doing it. They'll be better on Saturday and Perth will need to be on their game to grab the points.
Just hold your fire people, the season has barely begun.

Wish we had of kept Isobel Gomez, she is a great destroyer in midfield, and Skilful to boot. Murphy’s law she was instrumental in setting up their goal.
Also Annabel Martin was somehow able to run at twice the pace she ever displayed for us. We will beat them at home though.
What are Robertson and Whinham doing to keep match fit?
Or are they injured or working back to fitness? They haven’t been playing National league.

sure we can wisdh we had the current version of Gomez but she never really gave us that in the seasons she was with us. Maybe it was the way she was being ustilised in the squad but it is what it is.

I think it's a good sign that standards are higher and people are actually caring now. Last season these threads got pretty empty at times.
