nah no yellow first half
when she tackled the player on the byline she definitely got a yellow in the first half. I reckon she wasn't the one to receive a yellow after the Longo challenge.

We are just not good enough from the people in charge to the quality on the pitch. That first half was lower than the Lawrence era. Most negative set up and game philosophy i've ever witnessed.

Sounds strange but i'm glad the other team their second as we finally decided stuff it lets take off the ball and chains and have a go. i'm not happy because that City side looked average as at times they were beatable.

Bare minimum can accept losing if we have a go. gees but we need to sort our crap out theres no consistency to anything we do from week to week.

Where were Elliot and Frasar? anyone know?

....Big game vs Canberra next week...Dare to dream.

No Elliott, no Fraser, but no Brown or Robertson either.  It's not like we needed to score, lol. The difference between this team and the team that played the first 4 games is very marked. I have no idea why.

I like Speckmaier, she’s quick, can dribble round players and is niggly too. Glad to see her get the goal. Main was our second most likely to score- did she hit the woodwork start of the second half? The limited sharkty camera angles are so lame in the ALeague for the women.

Cox could be good if given more time on the pitch but she needs to form some good combinations with other players.
Breslin- has done not much to convince me that she is any better than Brown. Brown should have gone to an Aussie side if given the chance, she was scoring for fun in the state leagues. Instead we get Breslin who like flippin Davidson can’t tackle and does my head in by not sprinting back after getting beaten. Anyone in my teams who doesn’t put in a sprint after getting beaten or tracking back if they are the closest player doesn’t  get to start. Whinham- great to see her back on the pitch, but subs are ten minutes too late to get some confidence and play back into form. Saw her make a slide tackle for the first time today to win the ball near half way. I want her to be great, but she’s like Ozil to me and doesn’t work hard enough out of possession. Compare her work ethic to the younger sister at Sydney who scored in the final last year. McMeeken should start at either left or right back, neither Davidson or Foster are doing enough to start. We aren’t utilising the corner kick and free kick abilities of Foster, so why start her? She gets beaten too easily on the outside, in most games.
And what is it with the players chopping and choosing to be available or not each week? Commit to the team or don’t. Barry doesn’t ask for a break, and she has carried the defence for 3 seasons!

Next game, McMeeken to start, Breslin out, Davidson out. Fullbacks to go forward on the outside and try and create some 2v1s out wide so we can get into the box more from wide entry, rather than the long balls. And whilst our formation in defence was ok today, once they got the ball to their wide mids we had no one there to defend them and our mids were all central so when a full back went out to put pressure on them we were all pulled out of position. I think we went to a 3-5-2 at the end with Jaber, Lake and Taylor as the CBS. That shape worked way better for us, and allowed Longo to get on the ball more. McMeeken and Davidson wide mids, Longo, Errington and Whinham in the middle and Cox and Speckmeier up top. When people criticise Speckmeier I think about if she signed with say WSW next season and if we would wish she was still with us? Yes I hope she is with us again next season. And I wish we would re-sign Isabel Gomez. She is better than Wiz at holding mid. We miss her the most out of any ex player.

Keep changing shape, tactics, philosphy, players every week. We just need to settle on one a way to play and pick n stick. All too messy to be successful right now. It's all to amateurish.

Need a win this week to break the rut. Need Frasar back asap to create.

Lake player of season so far.

Barry went off injured which is a bit of a worry. Think I read somewhere hamstring. Guess we will find out later in the week how serious it is.
That will mean more shuffling around. Can't afford to put Taylor in at CB as we don't really have another ball winning CDM. Jabber looked strong in defence but rusty with some of her passing/decision making.
McMeeken continues to impress and must be getting closer to a start.
Speckmaier's goal apart, our imports really aren't stepping up. Cox maybe excused because she has only had a few games. Still think Brown should be given a run of games up front.

9 games to go we are heading south on the table but in reaching distance. Probably need at least 4 wins and a couple of draws to make playoffs. This week massive....

If Barry is out, which I'm guessing will happen if it's a hammy, then Kate Taylor has to go in CB. McMeeken has to start, was pretty useful coming on in the midfield, so maybe her alongside Longo.  Speckmaier seemed to have some mojo back which was a good sign.

I'd like to know what was up with these players that need rests, I assume it's mental health, because I've been following 3-4 on Insta and their posts make it look like a holiday to Aussie, plenty of beach time, restaurant time etc etc.
I'm not saying they don't need it, but they sure look relaxed.

Im looking forward to seeing them at Porirua Park. Every time Ive watched them live they seem a decent unit, not perfect, but often playing great football.
During recent games on TV they have looked totally different. I dont know whether its cos it looks different on TV or what, so Im hoping to learn something.
I too am rather mystified by all this "need a rest" stuff

Exactly! Re Fraser, can you imagine the men’s team announced without Kosta Barbarouses because Chiefy was giving him a ‘rest week’
WTF?

I think the rests thing might be to do with the limited squad number the coach can involve in the game. If the coach could name as many as the men's team on the bench, for possible involvement, then it might be a different story. Of course this argument doesn't account for Bri Edwards getting a rest.

Careful guys you get attacked like i do if you start questioning rests/holiday initiatives...maybe its just me that cops it from some. But yeah agree how and why this is happening is bizzare...we talking pro footballer, national representatives not turning up or being bounced from selection for a break!...you never miss a game...if you need a break (it happens overseas in pro environments) you take a few days off training to get away for a few days but you return and play games. But it seems to be accepted practise now with us. It is what it is.

i was thinking about this earlier and thinking about how it may have to do with the salary that the players are paid. If I was a female 20year old player getting $600 per week ($30-35k) to play football over the summer months and I knew that I was unlikely to play any significant game time on a Saturday and would have to travel for two days away from home. Or go to a festival or concert with my mates, and not have to travel away and then I return to training on Monday, and still fight for my place in the squad anyway, I could see how players might ask for leave for a game and feel that was potentially worth it. However if I was on $3-10k per week and I was a starter that hundreds of people paid money to come and watch play, then I would feel that the travel and missing out on those social times was worth it as the money would compensate for the lost opportunities. I may be way off the mark here, but just a random thought.
In my experience the social aspect of female football players was a very strong factor for players. Some would sit on the bench at one club while their friend was a starter compared to changing clubs to be a starter at another club.

You might be on the right track tho. Imagine being a 20 something female player getting $600 a week, for 30 hours a week, working a second job for $20 an hour to make ends meet. Having to travel to Oz and give up shifts, losing yr job cos u need too much time off, having to find another job, maybe a cheaper rental to survive....  Who knows what is going? Yes they might be pro footballers and we have high expectations of them, really they are semi pro and probably dealing with as much shark as those of us working two jobs, to make ends meet.

You keep making this same mistake.

Most of our squad aren't pro-footballers.  They are semi-pro.  They get paid, but not enough to pay their bills.  They need part time jobs to just make ends meat.

So comparing overseas where it is their full time job vs here were it is at most their part time job is intentionally ignorant.

If you can drop them 50k each per year maybe they will meet your expectations of pro-footballers.  At that point they won't be making insane money but can at least make this their full time jobs.

Until then stop being a prick and expecting semi-pros to commit like pros.

They all want to make it as a footballer? Be a pro and get a fulltime overseas deal? Then only way you going to do that is by playing...playing games. Tough scrifices? yip probably along the way...sadly...but at the end of the day if you want to better yourself in the game you have to be present. Could the club do more to help? possibly...but find a job and a boss that allows you to chase your dream.  Harsh reality.

Pretty sure that's what most if not all of them aspire too. Knott leaving is a classic example of the lack of money in the women's game. Sure she may have cited "other" reasons as well but the lack of funding was a major part of it.
the salary cap for the squad is $AU600,000 across min 20, max 26 players. Average of $AU30k for the season, and yes it's a short season, but they then still have to find other jobs that allow them to be absent for 5-6 months of the year and pay them enough to live on - that's the tough part. During the season with all the training and travel I can't imagine working another part time job as well. So you'd need an employer that was ok with you being away half the year and then just rock up for the rest of the year - that's just not gonna happen.
Part of me agrees that they should suck it up and chase their dreams, but the rest of me understands that that kind of attitude is what has led to players levaing the game way too early and some serious mental health issues which players across all sporrs are only now talking about. It's easy to say "suck it up" when you're not actually involved. But I'd like to see any one of us live on $NZ45k per annum as the sole income and deal with the pressures of being a "pro" footballer for 6 months of the year.

Even the biggest cricketing stars are starting to take time off for "personal reasons" https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350159086/india-top-against-england-despite-ben-stokes-heroics
"Virat Kohli withdrew from the first two tests for personal issues. It leaves a major hole in the India middle order in terms of runs and experience as their batting lineup transitions."
Are you gonna tell Kohli to "suck it up buttercup"?

Just so your apparent slow brain understands - its to demonstrate that not only female footballers are taking breaks mid season for "personal reasons" - this just happened to be the most recent of many that have occurred within the elite sporting world recently.

The entire world seems to have accepted that elite spports people will occassionally need time away from the game - irrespective of how much they earn - why can't you accept it?
