Can anyone tell me who dropped into centre defence beside Mack after Lake went off? Even though I was watching I couldn't tell !

I thought they all played pretty well.
Im not sure how they were set up before Lake was injured, but they adjusted to that loss well, and whilst a bit open at the back, we clearly went for the win and looked good. Should have been 8-1 really, the finishing was a bit of let down, although the Perth Keeper did brilliantly several times.

Barry and Speckmaier looked class, Whinham very creative and influential. I actually thought Main had a good game as a wingback, made plenty of tackles and some great forward runs. Her heading was very good APART from when she managed to miss an open goal!

It was a very enjoyable game to watch, and with 3 games coming up in Porirua, Im looking forward to the entertainment.

They were playing with a back three, Michaela Foster went from LWB to LCB. Michaela Robertson then went from RWB to LWB, with Emma Main coming on at RWB.

Wonder if any NWSL or WSL clubs are looking at her?  Clegg is in the NWSL after all now.

Enjoy Fraser while you can Nix fans. When you are on $30K per season, she surely won't hang around too much longer.

Yeah but they've been playing like this for a couple months. Still yet to win in 2024.

No they were shocking on their own. Jale looked disinterested. They constantly played themselves into trouble at the back.
We should have put 6 past them

Hopefully the Perth win a big confidence boost & turning point. NZ needs talented young footballers like Whinham to succeed. Kudos to her for grinding through the tough stuff.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350207476/wellington-phoenix-coach-hails-new-alyssa-whinham-she-keeps-their-playoff-push

Speaking ahead of the Victory match, Whinham said having to try to force her way into Temple’s plans was “definitely something” she “struggled with” at first.

“But being a professional footballer, that’s kind of what you sign up for – the highs and the lows.

“I definitely did struggle with it, but I think Auckland (where the Phoenix first played Perth this season, winning 2-1 on November 25), was a turning point for me.

“I went home early. I was struggling a bit mentally and I got a group around me and was sort of at breaking point.

“I was like OK, I either just grind and work through this, or I don’t and just give up. Thankfully I chose to grind and that has really paid off.

“I'm putting in a lot of hard work on top of another job (working the phones for a ventilation company) so it’s been pretty hard for me.

“Your confidence does sometimes decrease when you’re not getting those minutes and that’s something I’ve really worked on.

“I’ve taken the feedback that Paul has given me and have just been trying to work with that and do the best I can.”

Whinham was top notch on Friday night. Her pressing and angles of her runs to block passing lanes when out of possession was exemplary. I have never seen her work so hard off the ball, she has obviously been working real hard on that. If she wants a further challenge I would suggest to any player they should be a training partner for Barry that would push everyone- she seems to be the most consistent in her play and no doubt her training program is what sets her apart. I can’t see Barry playing for us again next season, she is too good.
I think anyone who would make the starting lineup at Sydney or Melbourne City should try and get a gig overseas.
Well done to the players and coaching staff for that performance. We created heaps of chances and won away from home.

I can entirely understand the frustration of not being fulfilled with game time, alongside hard training, time away, moderate pay and a second job.
Whinham was pretty good on Friday, but she ain't better than Fraser, or Longo id say. Opportunity will be limited im afraid.

Well, we could get a fee for her transfer?? If Bott can be a starters at Leicester then Barry is capable of playing at that level too and has a higher ceiling. She just needs to add scoring goals from headers to her kit bag.

Bott did her time in Scandinavia before she got a move to WSL. Bunge seems to be on a similar route.who is rated above and has scored a few goal along the way compared to Barry.
But yeah Barry and Probably Taylor next likely to move overseas from this team. Might be some teams looking at Fraser though who still has two years left on her contract.

Did Racing Louisville pay WSW a fee for Clegg?  I'm presuming so, since she was in Sydney only a few months.

Fraser has already scored 3 ALW goals from midfield (all from distance?). Clegg (at 18, is yes 3 years younger than Macey) scored 4 as a striker in the ALW. I reckon for sure Fraser is on the radar of some overseas clubs.

I'd normally say that for there development that players should stick around where they are going to get minutes and starts rather than leave too early and sit on the bench at bigger clubs. But with the poor salaries at ALW level, if you can move somewhere and actually get paid a proper wage, it's a no brainer I guess.

Milly Clegg to NWSL is going to be very interesting. How long is it going to take for her to get game time there? I'm sure the environment will be good for her, but it might take years before we really get to see the results of that. As a comparison, its been interesting watching Cox. A strong physical player that's come out of the US system, similar to Clegg in stature but probably a better player right now (due to age diff. to some degree). But she chose not to go down the NWSL route because she knew she'd be a bench player at best and get limited game time like Speckmaier with her experience at NWSL level.  These players are looking elsewhere to launch there pro careers for a reason.
But don't get me wrong. Good on Clegg paving the way for new possibilities for female footballers from this country.

Fraser likely to grab a fee - because she is an exciting player + 2 years on her contract.

I'm not sure on Barry etc - in part because defenders are not "stylish" in the eyes of media and whether or not they will get a fee.

As more money comes into the women's game this will probably change, but for now, I can only see players who can create highlight packages getting signed for a fee.
