So neither of City's two teams could make it to the Quarters this season.

Eastern suburbs 2 v Birkenhead 1 at allen Hill stadium this avo.
Pretty wet and windy and a typical cup tie
1=0 Ht to easts - penalty for a clumsy challenge .
Birko equalised soon after half time - Dino Botica header .
Suburbs took the lead sonn after and should have put the game to bed long before a nervy last 10 minutes. some Keystone cops finishing .
Birko look a bit shy on numbers at the moment and toothless up front.
Easts don't play much football but well organised. Not sure if they were missing anyone but didn't look like an undefeated top of the table Northern League side.
Will depend on how the draw pans out but the two strongest sides left in the last 8 look to me to be wellington Olympic and Christchurch united. I guess they'll draw each other in the next round
My first visit to Devonport this season. Admittedly a difficult winter but Allen Hill Stadium looking more ramshackle as each year passes. Not sure as to what happened to the redevelopment plans of a few years back.Maybe Covid or maybe the Devonport Nimbys

My picks are

Western Springs
Waterside Karori
Hamilton Wanderers
Wellington Olympic

The draw beyond that will inevitably be Olympic away to Western Spring and Wanderers away to Karori. An Olympic Karori final would undoubtedly still be played in Auckland because NZF will have already booked Mt Smart.

I’m looking forward to Olympic vs Easts. Two of the strongest teams in the country. My local team (but one I don’t support)… coming off the back of a 4-0 hiding with a full strength team. Going to be a great day

Eastern Suburbs coach got sent off late in the game against Olympic for a homophobic slur! Don’t know who he is, pretty young, pretty arrogant too.

Presumably he’ll be banned for the semi or will that be a league ban?

Good game today! Looked like a soft red for Olympic which made it tough but well done Easts.

I believe he might have been saying something in retaliation to being called Danny Hays bum boy. Didn’t hear it but the shark being slung between both benches was pretty poor from both sides. They’d do well to remember that 1) They were sitting right below the camera that picked up a lot of what was being said and 2) There was a lot of kids, families around etc. Games like these should be a positive representation of the highest level of NZ Football.

The officiating was awful though which lead to a lot of the tension. Terrible call for the red card, it was never DOGSO as Gulley was being covered by Mata. Some of the offside calls both ways were well off the mark too. I feel like linesman in NZ are too scared to speak up to refs.

Both teams were guilty for getting into unnecessary verbal's but mate up in Auckland reckons its a common occurrence for the suburbs staff and are often out of control. Agree referee hasn't helped things yesterday either so it added to emotions. If a slur has occurred i guess the referee has to report it. Good for the neutral!

I assume it was Wintersgill that was dismissed ? If so , he has a bit of form for his sideline behaviour.
If it was a homophobic slur then what is the going rate. Think Myer Bevan got 10 games a couple of years back
On a more positive note I don't recall a semi final line up with so many previous cup winners in it
Eastern Suburbs (7) , Christchurch United (7) , waterside (4 - last in 1947) and Melville (2- counting Technical OB and waikato United as they are sort of part of the Melville History ; Bruce Holloway may correct that ?)

Edit - Suburbs and Chch United should be 6 each , one behind Mt Wellington who you really can't see increasing that total in the foreseeable future

Central United in 2005 scored 40 on their way to winning the cup, helped greatly by a 21-0 win over Norwest United (who incidently hold the record for worst defeat in the Chatham Cup, twice losing 21-0, the other time in 1998 to Metro)

Central's 2005 record
R2 Norwest United Won 21-0
R3 Oratia United Won 6-0
R4 Waitakere City Won 2-1
R5 Hamilton Wanderers Won 4-2
QF East Coast Bays Won 2-1
SF Halswell United Won 3-1
Final Palmerston North Marist Won 2-1

This does not surprise me in the slightest. I've witnessed him explode at fourth officials (I think he thinks he's putting some Klopp style pressure on them?) and some low tier nonsense a few years ago like instructing ball kids to hide balls when ES have been winning...

Let's just say Kane better hope his footballing success catches up with his ego.

With that said, if both benches and fans have been numpties all day it frustrates me that he's the only one punished as it rewards fans for goading a reaction which ultimately encourages that behaviour.

Hmm interesting ban. I was watching it live and it was pretty clear he was just repeating back to the Olympic bench what they had been saying to them, which they then confirmed back to him. Along the lines of "You're just Danny Hays b*m boy"

Nah I was there watching from half way, he was told he was riding Danny Hays coat tails. He chose to interpret it that way.

Also that particular slur is very much a British thing. Haven’t heard it in over a decade so it’s would be a pretty niche sledge from the Olympic bench.
