This from aunty beeb:

Portsmouth have signed striker Jermain Defoe from Tottenham.
The move was thought to have hinged on Benjani Mwaruwari joining Manchester City but went ahead though City failed to seal that deal before the deadline.

Defoe, 25, had failed to hold down a regular first-team place at White Hart Lane and was told he was free to leave the club by manager Juande Ramos.

The partnership of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov had limited Defoe to mainly substitute appearances.

Defoe's contract was set to expire at the end of next season and Spurs were keen to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The forward was left out of Fabio Capello's first England squad for the match against Switzerland on 5 February.

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, who managed Defoe at West Ham, had already bolstered his forward line with the loan signing of Lyon striker Milan Baros during the January transfer window.

Been on the cards for a while, but destination a surprise. Harry has built a solid defence, so some strike power in the form of the lttle fella will probably be good for them. Wonder how much he went for?

Be interesting to see how his career goes. It  could actually be the making of him, going to a club like Portsmouth. Redknapp won't stand for any ego contests. Nor will the pompey fans.

i hope he does well, i remember a mate of mine predicting that Lampard, Cole and Defoe would be West Ham's contribution to a great England team of the future

there's only about 3 years for his prediction to come true

Yeah, I have a real soft spot for the fella, but Keane has been consistently good for the last two seasons, and it is really hard in the Premiership to have an attacking force without a target man who can hold up the ball: of which Keane or Defoe are not suited.HarryHotspur2008-02-02 18:18:10

It's a good move every Spurs supporters agree that it's the best road for. Ramos see that having three strikers and a youngster introduced is the way to go. Defoe needs more regular playing time and at Pompey is best for them and England.

Defoe scores on debut. That'll be it from him for the season.

I'm a little concerned about this, i can see why THFC want to sell him, he has been stalling on a new contract for some time, and has only 18 months to go, so Spurs won't want to lose him on a Bosman.

BUT with Bent injured we only have Keane and Berbatov, so if one gets injured, then i'm not sure where our next striker comes from!!
