Too many white boots for my liking, though

I was there so I'll give you my thoughts.

 

Yeah, when they ran onto the field I was shocked. I was expecting a pretty much white away uniform like most teams have. My next thought was- maybe both teams wear home uniforms for pre-season games. Well... do they? From the pics I've seen of the Glory game it appears not. So perhaps this is the away uniform for the Phoenix. I like it. Very striking. It was slightly annoying in this particular game because the Mariners wear mostly yellow and some dark blue, while the Phoenix were wearing mostly black and some yellow, a bit confusing at times, but OK.

 

As for the actual game, I'll comment briefly about each team.

Mariners- Great attacking play in the first half, Wilkinson with his first goal for the Mariners ever in about 60 games! Kwasnik continues his scoring form from last season as well as making some pacey runs behind the Phoenix defense, Gumprecht is looking good- energetic, always wanting to get involved, no mistakes. Vidmar was amazing, brilliant distribution, never missed a tackle. In the second half I think the coach had told them to practice holding on to a lead, they didn't seem to want to attack at all despite being a man up.

Phoenix- Smeltz has shown the Wales game wasn't just a fluke performance with some great runs, dribbling, passing, crossing, unfortunately not much shooting- still, best Phoenix player on the field. Cleberson is one violent Brazilian! He got injured though it seems, collapsed and went off, came back on then collapsed again and was subbed off. The other two Brazillians who played look decent, will get better after they play with the team a few times to get some combinations going. O'Dor made two probably goal saving fouls for his red card. Old and Lockhhead, the wing backs, didn't play well in attack, no communication. Solid in defence though.

was one of those commentators and i think cleberson will become a favourite with you guys - he is very much in the che bunce mould - big, strong and good in the air

 

thought smeltz was your best player - all over the park

 

second best was moss in goals - faultless

 

brownlee, while his finishing was bogus, looked lively and made some excellent runs

 

your left hand side with lochead and daniel was pretty average - lochead is so slow

 

campos looked good when he came on

 

coveney looked overweight and unfit

 

but all in all you should be happy with the performance given the circumstances

Nah he was good in defense, its just that he was running around the field pushing Mariners players- "argy bargy"  in back play- for no particular reason. It looked like he was at a pub trying to start a fight IMO. As for his actual play, very physical, pretty solid in the air, accurate passing. Its just that when you compare him to Vidmar at the other end of the field he's no competition.

 

Hi Mick, do you know anything about the uniforms? Was that the Phoenix away uniform? An altered home one? A special pre-season one?
