Yea agree. We looked dodgy at the back without Cleberson, gave away 2 soft goals. Conditions dictated the way the game was played (very slippery firm surface - heavy dew). The Roar used their fullbacks as wide players very well, we struggled to defend against there pace out wide. Fortunately a lot of there crosses were wasted. We didn't offer the same going forward out wide and tended to play to feet up the middle with a lot of 1-2 stuff that was hard to control because of the surface. Lot of our guys slipping over or misjudging the ball in the air because of the poor lights. Draw would have been a little unfair to the Roar on balance, although we should have had a penalty in the 2nd half. Crowd was definitely bigger than 4000, possibly between 6-7000.

I think the Phoenix need 1 more versitile defender for some depth because judging by tonights reports minus one or two defenders you will struggle and remember injuries and suspentions will happen during the year.

The Phoenix played quite well and deserved a penalty in the second half. Old's goal was good and I went absolutely ballistic when it went in. I know this sounds like I'm a sore loser but the refereeing in that match was of a poor quality and on multiple occasions throughout the match I felt like running onto the field to throttle the ref - fortunately I restrained myself.

They said the crowd was just over 4 000, but I don't think they actually counted any of the people who were 16 or under who got in free (well, they didn't count me or my friends), so the attendance could have actually been quite a lot higher.loyalgunner2007-07-28 15:21:20

I reckon 4000 is not too far off the mark, there was empty seats around, it wasnt like you were sitting right next to someone, there were plenty of gaps.

I totally enjoyed the night, was thinking afterwards how lucky Wgton is to be able to go out and watch quality football at night.

I have supported the Kingz, the Knights, and now the Phoenix, but I have to say last nights game brought back an awful feeling of dejavu.  The temptation just to kick it forward and hope that our forwards will get it (sometimes works, sometimes they get it and its 4 on 1) and the ability to pass the ball straight to the other team is at times a little scary and embarassing.  From what I saw last night a solid center back is needed, Number 5 Dodd (according to programme) had a mare at the back.

Anyways, don't mean to be down on the team as it was good, just gave me a fright thats all.

Well you just gotta bunch up together like the YF lads did last Sunday and really give it heaps of support to boost the lads

The back 4 were not as bad last week so not sure why they did not back up....

the crowd estimate was about right...add in security and the ball runners and you'd be up around 4300...

it was quite a mixed crowd and it was a good environment. my little group arrived a bit later than planned and was in an area dominated by youngish families which didnt really help much for the chanting. but we managed to convert a few egg chasing friends and got a few interesting stories out of a chap who attended an Everton match at the stadium back in the day and seemed like he'd seen alot more footy than many...extremely valueble for the youngsters around

i think most of the crowd was there just to see what it was all about and that was good, a happy, friendly set up and something the young'uns will remember, and hopefully get along and play/watch the great game.

if the score was a bit different and Qld wasnt playing as well as they were we had a chant or two lined up "are you Sydney in disguise...?" for example...

for me i wasnt too impressed with Daniel's play...he seemed talented and made a great plays but he spent more time diving than playing football. Lochead wasnt too flash either IMO until later in the 2nd half. Christie seemed brilliant for most of the time....bring on the next game in chch...with better advertising

novel over~~

Game was absolutely crap! you guys are kidding yourselves if you think that was decent football. very little in the way of football played, from both teams i might add. Everybody i spoke to was very disappointed with the match and by the end had completely lost interest and either left or started talking about other things. The only saving grace was that it was only pre season so your not supposed to be playing at your peak. Atmosphere was non existent but that was to be expected due to the one off nature of the game. The group i was with had a drum going and was creating a bit of noise till teh security came and said we would be kicked out if we kept banging the drum. Also how much can you expect people from round the country to be passionate about a team name Wellington?

All in all a big fizzer but still nice to go to football in Chch.

compared to what we usually get on offer in chch i felt it was respectable...the atmopshere was good for the younger fans with simple (if boring) chants like Phoenix *clap* *clap* *clap*

it was quite quiet at times but thats prob cos its such a distance to the pitch and the majority of the crowd knew no better

the game was very average, both teams  looked more like they were have a training kick about most of the time.  There was a pretty big crowd 4-5000, people are kidding themselves if they think it was much more than 5000.  The football was pretty dull, as was the crowd.  The little kids 6-9 year olds were getting into it though.  Didn't feel like i could yell any obsenities because of they though, and actually it wasn't just that,  I was 3/4 of the way up and on the halfway line, right in front of danny halligan incidently, i thought there would be some atmosphere there but it seemed like everyone just wanted to sit quietly and you would have got funny looks if you made any noise.
Well done to the people that got the pots and pans in they made some noise and didn't get taken by security.
i can't believe they took a drum off someone at a football game how dumb is that.
Anyway the game was pretty lifeless and my girlfriend kept wanting to talk to me which wasn't hard because it was so quiet.
Plus we were a million miles from the pitch, give me a game at english park any day!
When we scored the goal i jumped up and was yelling and screaming with the guy next to me and a handful of others but after about 5 secs
then i realised 99% of people were anchored to there seats and were clapping polietly
and i was blocking peoples view so i had to sit down and be quiet again like everyone else.

Maybe someone can inform me when the rules were changed which allows defends to take down players from behind in the box when they are one on one with the keeper last time i checked this was a straight red card!!  For those not at the game, queensland defends all fall to the ground simaltaneously, much like that footage of the football game where lightening stuck and knocked everyone over.  Leaving Smeltz the ball and he dribbles towards goal, defend gets up and clatters into him from behind and ball is cleared.

Anyway don't get me wrong i was glad to be there but it was pretty woeful.

Dodds effort was in the steven old category of brain explosions and i assumed it was old until i checked the programme.

Smeltz ran all night, which he had to if me wanted the ball he wasn't getting much service.

Daniel was fine i don't care if he was a little theatrical, he ran with the ball and got a couple of free kicks.

Worst thing i thought was that i times it seems the defence was practicing their bazeley balls!!.

Gings have you been to many canterbury united games, way more interesting and lively than friday night!

I saw the spam united banner late in the game, and could hear some attempts at chants from somewhere so well done but on the whole very dull crowd.

i think the fact the crowd was so young made people more concerned about chants (and also that most of them were there to see what it was about)

ive been to a few Can U games (not as many as i'd have liked but a few) and i agree the atmosphere is terrific in comparison to Friday...remember though that the crowds at EP are true football fans, generally people who play/played/administer/live the game and are generally older.

i still think it was good the younger ones got into it though coz they'll be the ones getting vocal in the future if they arent on the field..........
