Crowds - The thread of Australian whining

I think our crowds are holding up well compared to other A-League clubs and Wellington rugby.

I have not done an analysis compared to other A-League clubs but compared to the Hurricanes and Lions, and taking 2008 as the base, average crowd trends are;

Nix; 2009 (+5%), 2010 (+35%, excl. playoffs), 2010 (+105%, incl. playoffs)

Canes; 2009 (-9%), 2010 (-17%)

Lions;  2009 (-1%), 2010 (-47%)

Despite the negative economic impact of the recession on many Wellington businesses and the job insecurity for a lot of public servants our crowds are improving - a good news story.

Some decent weather, a continual improvement in form and results and a couple of home payoff games and we will be looking just fine.

For ease of comparison the average attendances for the Nix are calendar year not season and Nix exhibition games are excluded.

Agreed. I never expected a huge crowd boost on the back of the World Cup - i'm just happy our crowds haven't dropped.

I would say our crowds have remained static. Average of first three games crowd for each season:

1. 12,675
2. 7,851
3. 9,105
4. 9,135

Yeah, Phoenix crowds are very impressive in comparison to the largely dire efforts around Australia.

That's a red herring.

The crowd that rocks up to Wgtn games is completely independent of anything that happens in Australia.

Why's that?

Seems a pretty fair comparison to me.

The issue is crowds (absolute) in Wellington not crowds as a proportion of the greater Wellington area and compared with what any other city is pulling in.

Would you think that a crowd of 500 in Wgtn is so much better than a crowd of 1000 in Sydney?

The better comparison is year on year crowds for the same location.

Otherwise we might as well be very happy that we are outperforming the other teams on a per capita basis (but still not actually getting many punters in to watch the games).

add 7,212 to 419,398 = 426,610.

Does anyone know why the stadium figures are different from the ones the A-League reports? A-league ones are always more and in some case around a thousand more. seems bizarre.

Things that we could learn from the league to attract more people to Nix games.

1. 15 Minutes of intense Lord of the rings type music with a heartbeat over top of it.
2. Fire when the Nix score and enter the stadium.
3. A band at half time.
4. Build up to confirmation of a Red or yellow card on the big screen, With a slow motion replay and RED CARD or YELLOW CARD flashing up on the screen over top of it.
5. National Anthem every game, But just New Zealand's
6. Haka or some sort of choreographed intimidating dance after the anthems.

And from the other eggball code:

7. Announcer over the load speakers: "make some noise if you like how Wellington are playing!" (That was what they had at Eden Park last weekend for the Auckland game (substitute Welly for Auckland, of course). Rugby crowds are so dumb. Of course I wore my Nix shirt ... while enjoying Auckland Rugby's corporate box on halfway!)

8. On the loudspeaker - "Defence... defence... defence... defence..." like in Basketball. That has to be the most moronic tradition in spectator sport

The words to chants up on the big screen.

Stock a lot more food than I've ever seen to any football match.

Simplify chants "Phoenix Phoenix" in really deep monotonous tone.

Remodel football so that the men on the field touch each other in awkward positions as often as possible.

2 and 3 are actually quite expensive.

4, I'm not sure they're allowed to replay referee decisions. Hence no offside replays

This is a ludicrous idea. We should be focussing on marketing gimmicks, not actually performing on the pitch. Thundersticks and double sided cards are infinitely more appealing than goals and results

It's because they don't sell kids' stadium jackets and nix season badges.

Oh yes and also those cool nix season pass holders.

when it costs $4.50 for water and only $3.50 for coffee you know something is wrong..... i reckon people just cannot afford all the costs when attending matches, and now pick and choose games and the weather unfortunately will decide if they came,

...eg...family of 4 from Lower Hutt......

1;  transport to and from venue...$25.00 approx...[ more if you parked at the ROF]

2;  tickets..............................$87.00

3;  Programme.........................$5.00

3;  food, drinks etc...................$35.00 approx.   [ take your own food and drink ?????? ]

TOTAL................................. $152.00 ..beyond many people these days........plus you want value for your money....something the team is not achieving this season ....yet ...

mid week games are a killer

tough getting families to go with school work the next day plus the club must take a big hit.....they still have the same expenses as a weekend game but they get a small crowd
