No this isnt another Elvis seen in Greenlane story, just what might
have happened a few years ago. (1991).
I was contacted by the then Chairman of the NZFA, Warwick
Gendall, to organise a dinner as part of the NZFA's Centenary
celebrations. He was sure I wouldnt mind putting the effort in
once I knew who the speaker was. One Bobby Moore.
Unfortunately we all know that the big C had taken over and
before things had progressed further, he had to withdraw from the
engagement. All arrangements at that stage had been at NZFA
level so I never got to communicate directly.
The NZFA then moved to get Pele, and secured a visit with the
help of Ian Wells and Sunday Times.
I dont recall whether he was going to be a speaker but Ian and
I had arranged a couple of appearances in Wellington.
That season the new Super League was starting. This was a
return to the regional league competition after National and
regional leagues had been changed almost every year of
existence.
The two games in Wellington were local derbys. Petone and
Wellington at Memorial Park and Miramar and Lower Hutt at
Centennial. Pele was to kick off both games, with a bit of help
from late kick offs and helicopters. Two weeks before arrival a
telegram was received cancelling the trip for business
reasons.
Never mind, I am still one of the few Hammers supporters who
can say they have had Trevor Brooking around to their home. (1987
when he was out playing for University in Auckland).
I also had the pleasure of being liaision for the England team
that visited here for the centenary.
Ian Rodgers did a grat job organising that match. Good to se
he is one of the people behind the Phoenix.
Sir Trev was in your home? Hope you haven't washed the carpet.

He will probably ring tonight. Always wants to know how the
Nix are going.
He offerred us Dailly but I said we were going better than
that.
I used to correspond with Phil Parkes a fair bit and met him a few
times when he owned "Parkesy's Sportshop on Uxbridge road. I still
have the Hammers Coffee mug and Autographed 1979 West Ham Year book
he gave me.

I went to quite a few QPR games my friends were season
ticket holders. always a good laugh and easy to get to when the
irons were playing away
QPR and West Ham in the 70's, 80's and early 90's were reknowned
for their cultured & attractive style of play. Then the QPR
dream turned to crap but the Hammers carry on. There's always been
an affinity between the clubs.
