After watching the loss to France this morning and feeling quite down for a while, I tried to look on the bright side - naturally that meant turning to my number one sport: football.

I myself turned away from rugby a little after experiencing the heartache of '95, '99 and '03.

I am thinking that if there are people similar to me, will this morning's loss result in increased footballing interest - more specifically the Phoenix? Could we see others decide they are sick and tired of failing every four years, and turn to the phoenix/all whites as they look to be a breath of fresh air in our sporting community?

I think this could be the case. I will certainly be spreading a positive footballing word amongst the doom and gloom of a mourning workplace tomorrow. I encourage others to do the same. I know the Nix lost on the weekend, but they do play attractively, are often an underdog (this appeals to a lot of sports fans) and are something new and therefore spark interest easily.

I think we should all get out there and get in people's ears about it more than usual - convert them while they are weak!

Be interesting to see peoples thoughts on this one...

I think it will happen to some degree. But i think itll happen naturally, and wont be that big a deal, so wouldnt exactly go about forcing it (kicking people while theyre down about the result).

In the end, we have to  stop comparing football to rugby, because that makes us as bad as the 'boofhead' rugby mentality of "rugby is the only sport anyone should support, anyone else is a pansy"...we dont want to be that..

i thinkl the best thing is there isnt the crazy expectation that we will win everything easily in football, we are always up against it, and that can be good for us moving forward.

in short i think yes it will help, hopefully with rowd numbers especially.

Agreed Muso. The expectations placed upon the All Blacks are over the top.

Tegal, i did not mean kicking them while they are down - i too am very down after the ABs loss. I just meant that now is a good time to bring up the Phoenix in conversation. People may be looking for other sports without realising it and hearing of something that is positive could bring them along to the game.

This is not a direct comparison, just an opportunity to add further weight behind the phoenix.

I also abhor the rugby supporters that seem to think no other sport is comparable. It is horrible arguing with them and I often sink to their level and play the two off aginst eachother - when i began this post that was certainly not my intention. It woud just be get them to come along to football matches too. I have a mate who is a diehard rugby supporter, yet with a little persuasion he has seen more phoenix games than lions games this year :)

The Phoenix and Yellow Fever  have brought back the fun in sport, thats what will get them to come along.

Rugby gets too serious during World Cup year and the rugby types need some light relief now for sure

Dont agree the expectations are over the top, they have set them selves up as something special and have failed to deliver yet again.Despite having money thrown at them at an incredible rate and supposedly no stone left unturned. They are over paid and under played sportsman.Dont think it will have much impact on football, but i would think rugby fans will really nut off at how these guys get paid plenty for basically doing buggar all.
I just cant get over that after 4 years preparation they still had a fullback at centre  and they played someone who had had buggar all game time in the last 12 months.Maybe they were looking ahead and didnt take this game as they should have.

hopefully NZ's media-fueled, marketing-driven, disproportionate and unhealthy obsession with one sport is just a tiny bit moderated by this result

how many journalists did NZ media send to the Cricket World Cup? NZ Cricket had to pay for Richard Boock to go
how many did we send to the Rugby World cup? were there any left in NZ

we need some perspective and some balance in this country

Doesn't Ryan Nelson get more than all the All Blacks put together?

Or something like that...
But then he plays a crapload more games.

Very good comments marius latacus... agree with the majority. Also think ballane made a very valid argument, especially the last paragraph. They certainly have built them up as something special - especially when they spoke about preparing for this 3 years ago - seems such a waste now.

P.S. love your little gif thing alistair, cracks me up

The AB's are, in a few ways, similar to the English Football Team.

1.      Haven't won a world cup in years, but are still touted as "good to do the business" every time              round

2.      Both have (or had in Englands case) a pin up boy as there "marquee" player, who often fails to         deliver in the big tournaments (Tri-Nations is NOT a big tournament)

3.      No one is EVER suprised when they lose to teams the shouldn't

By Bye A.B's - no one really cares.

In defence of the All Blacks Barber21, the AB's win more than they lose, and at least they are consistently ranked the number one team.

The poms think there football team is the best, even when they are not even top 10.

But anyways, as you say, I watched the first half, and all that kicking was enough to put me off. Didn;t actually watch much of the 2nd half.

Hopefully, with the world cup done and dusted, and the npc no longer in wellington, a few more people will be tempted to come along to the nix.

I agree- AB's are the rugby equivalent of Engl- one wc won at home and they think they are world beaters- Engl football team was once the most feared in the world, so arrogant they didn't even turn up to the first WC.

A nation that pins its emotional hopes on 15 individualistic morons, parading as a team does not deserve the sporting adoration that it receives out of all proportion to its stature, and historical-statistical prowess.

The ploy from the rugby world is obvious, treat the All Blacks like gods in front of them and their fans and they will believe the hype, they will regard themselves as omnipotent, not understanding that rugby is a Neanderthalic game where more is achieved by brute force and passion than technical ability, so the like of France with their innate joie de guerre and wind thrown caution will naturally triumph where the clinical and heartless silver backs will fail.

This is the best possible result for world rugby- 30,000 ex-football fans crowded the plaza in Paris, hysterical over the result of a truly obscure game, more passionate than your average Marge from Takapuna would ever dream to be- thank god the minnows have now been eliminated from the so called Rugby World Cup, so that the top 4 teams can proceed beyond the farce.

It's the - 4.5 million people are in mourning clap-trap I coud wdo without. If 4.5 million people gave that much of a sh*t then the radio sport announcers making those claims wouldn't be barely spotted when it comes to radio ratings.

Firstly, In comparison, the Women's World Soccer Cup played in China recently, was televised to over 200 countries.
I dont have this years figures, but the 2003 Rugby World Cup went out to 205.

Unfotunately the NZ rugby supporters are hit hardest with this loss because for the last eight years it has been drummed into them that the only game that matters is the final and every other game is either against substandard opposition (France C earlier this year) or is just another trial to sort out combinations.
The NZ rugby public have been swindled into paying A grade prices to watch these games that lack passion and commitment, so what happens when the crunch comes. Just another trial lads. A fullback playing centre, a lock that hasnt played all year and resorting to 55 metre drop goals to save the match. Where was the preparation. Ali Williams said this week that the team was only performing at 70% leading into a quarter final. Makes a farce of the preparation.
I dont want to jam it up rugby suporters, but there will be no more rugby in Wellington this season so encourage your rugby mates to come along  for a bit of fun and relaxation. Dont try and convert them That wil come naturally if you can get them in the gate. Let them have a laugh at us silly soccer fans, who knows, it might catch on.

sir les, its fine to win the "qualifiers" (e.g Tri Nations, Grand Slam) but a different kettle of fish when it comes to the big show.

Im afraid my dear YF friends that when the lights are on bright, the All Blacks are dim.

fck i'm glad 2 be an aussie.

I lived in nz for a while and was bored sh*tless with the overhyping of rugby (btw i lived in fiji too and theyre worse).

in oz we are the only country in the world with 4 domestic pro footy codes.

im chuffed with how well the roos did in the afl, the bunnies are rising in the nrl, fleet no good in the arc and the fc.. well, who knows.

see, wallabies can die and most of oz doesnt care. theres nowhere in oz where rugby is #1 (that includes act btw). so, no big deal.

i pity the fools who live in a country totally dominated by rugby.
