I will bet everything I own that a Fijian netballer or 7's player in the country for there event will have a "relationship" with a member of the Fijian military.

That is the great thing about the way Winston has done this - justifying their actions with use of words such as "relationship" means the bet is unloseable (if that is such a word).

I certainly hope Mr Peters is not making up these rules on the hoof, defining "family" and "relationship" as he pleases

Why is it that every time we start to see some positive traction for football in this country w**kers like Peters strive to do there best to undermine the game? This really is pissing me off. No wonder the great unwashed don't bother with the sport to any great degree. Can't the friggin' politicians stay out of it for once, and if they can't why can't they make a call based on the best interests of the sport as well as the people? IS IT REALLY THAT FRIGGIN' HARD? The argument against the 'keeper is tenuous at best. How many Fijians living in this country at present have links with the military back in Fiji FFS? And nothing seems to be happening to them.

sorry but some prepared are not prepared to sit back and take this rogering.

I see Sunday Star Times mention that we are going to be keeping a close eye on other sporting events in the country involving Fiji

Is this deep philosphical musing or a bit of drunk poetry?

I'll change my signature to I'm prepared not to be prepared. Courtesy of Feverish, 14 October 2007 if that's OK?

If Joe Rocokoco (sp?) father lived in Fiji and was in the miltary, then wood NZ stop him from playing?

Doubt it.

That's really a pointless conjecture; just enjoy Scotland's win today...

For credibility's sake guys, let's be careful about the "conspiracy" stuff. While it seems very unlikely this decision is directed and intended to hurt football, it is entirely possible Peters and Clark and playing a game of political oneupmanship with Bainimarama (which incidentally he has won hands down this time) and that football was the unfortunate sandwich in the middle. It is also entirely possible these politicians would not have played the same game (e.g. decided to use such a broad definition of "family") if it had been a certain other code.

So, certainly no harm in us asking the hard questions:

- What discretion did Winston Peters exercise in making this decision? (he has done his best to suggest this was very cut and dry, but it actually seems there was room within the sanctions for the Government to have given the goalkeeper a visa if it wanted to)
- Was there a precedent for this definition of family? (is it written down somewhere that the family of partners are to be included in the sanctions?)
- What advice did Peters receive from his officials about the consequences of this decision? Did they tell him Fifa would never permit this bc of the precedent it would sit? (Peters is relying heavily on the apparent Fifa U-turn to justify his decision. But, is that just a red herring and argument of convenience?)
- Did the Sevens team and the women's basketball team get scrutinised? (its hard to believe nobody in that Sevens squad had not extended family link to the military)
- Will the netball team also be similarly scrutinised?
- Is the Government going to reimburse NZ football? (Whatever peters says about the differences between the NZ cricket/zimbabwe situation and this one, there are also many, many fundamental similarities - ie a specific govt policy directed at a specific country has cost NZ sport millions of dollars and there was nothing at all the code could do about it)
- Is the sanction consistent with that of Australia? (Peters keep saying our sanctions are in line with international practice. In that case how can we possibly play the game in Australia, who are also supposed to have sanctions against Fiji?)

I feel sick to my stomach. This is just getting worse and worse - imagine if Fiji get awarded the 3 points and we have to win the away game against them? The crowd will be insanely fired up.
