Phoenix lost.  Don't remember the score.  I barely remeber any result other than Saturday's Nighthawks one.

In 11/12? CCM won 2-0.

ACFC beat CCM once and CCM beat Phoenix once, therefore ACFC are better than the Phoenix.

Phoenix beat waitakere once and waitakere beat ACFC once, therefore Phoenix are better than ACFC.

I'm confused.

Can somebody tell me why Spoonley is good enough to play for the All Whites but can only make the bench for ACFC. Should Williams played instead????

Been thinking the same thing. I've always thought Spoonley was alright, at least better than Williams, I think Anderson got chucked on the bench ahead of him just to reach youth requirements. Maybe Spoonley had some shockers in the past which I haven't seen, I dunno, but your point is a good one.
Kinda like the time when Mulligan couldn't make the Phoenix but kept making All Whites appearances

So does that make both ACFC and the Phoenix the best club team in the world? Who then are the champions of Africa. That's what I want to know.

This ranking stuff was posted the other day - most of it is pretty daft, and so pretty funny.

The #1 ranked team in the world are Barcelona.  ACFC are ranked #149 just a bit above Wigan Athletic (haha that puts it in perspective doesn't it?!).  ACFC are 1000 places (!) better than the Nix, who are sitting at #1142 , and the Nix are also almost 100 places lower than Team Wellington who are ranked #1060.  Oh hang on, that means the Nix rezzies are better than the Nix...

And the best Afican side, as far as I can tell, are TP Mazembe - ranked #75 in the world.

FYI Everton are ranked # 19.

Thank you Football Rankings

And ACFC beat TP Mazembe in 2009, then the champions of Africa, 3-2 in that legendary result so that makes ACFC better than #75 in the world. ACFC have also beaten CCM who are second in A League so that makes them???? No wonder Ricki was too scared to play City - woosh!

You've got to allow ACFC our little moment in the sun.

Interestingly I think ACFC has played a wider variety of world teams than the Phoenix - from J league champions to TP Mazembe and we have a pretty good record. I think we'd give a good account of ourselves against the Phoenix who I don't think are J league champion standard. I hope this game happens one day - it would create a lot of interest in Auckland. Perhaps a home and away challenge would be fair. O League champion against A League wooden spoon (sorry guys, just stating a fact).

To be fair - I think 1000 places better than the Nix in the Fifa rankings is a bit hard on the boys from Wellington. I don't think ACFC are any better than 500 places above the Phoenix.

I don't think anyone ever denied your place in the sun. I think more than a few people said bloody well done.

I think what people are over is that its still referenced 4 years later. Yes you did have your time in the sun, but other than winning O League, when did you last win something? You haven't won the national title in 4 years (sorry guys, just stating a fact) and have in fact had to rely in Waitakere winning for your inclusion into the O League (although next year, you have earned it by actually making the final). I don't hear your thanking Waitakere for that.
The Phoenix were 1 handball and a YC away from making the A League final but in a forum devoted pretty much to the Phoenix, you hear mention of it extremely rarely because its past history.

I'd also add since that 09 tournament, whom have you beaten? If the CWC was every 4 years (like a WC), your would be more than entitled to bask in the glory of it considering the last one would have been 4 years ago, when you were there and achieved what you did. Since then there have been 3 others and you guys haven't done anything (sorry guys, just stating a fact)

Gee, lighten up JV, I think you need a cup of tea and a lie down. This thread has been quite tongue in cheek.

Actually ACFC has won the O League three times in a row and looks likely to make that four times, which isn't bad. I rate that above the ASBP final, a one off.

Just to say JV, as an ACFC supporter who also generally keeps tongue in cheek, I often make the trip down to Wellington to watch the Nix do battle at the ROF. And yell and shout when I'm there. Best games, the 2 matches in the play-offs - and they also seem a long time ago now. Next season... And I'll be down there again b4 play-off time.

To be fair, I'd be happy to see the Phoenix win the A League. That would be a huge achievement because it's a damned good competition. I wouldn't envy TW however if they did, talk about sharing a bed with an elephant.

Mind you it would be interesting if the tables were turned and TW won the ASBP premiership and qualified for the O League and the Phoenix earned another wooden spoon. Wonder how Wellington's football supporters would take that?

A bit of a puzzler this? An Australian team usually does win the A League, unless you don't count Queensland as Australian.

as a new zealand football fan, you guys embarrassed me at the last world club cup

what you achieved a few years ago was awesome - made me proud

how you played in 2011 was not as good, but still pretty cool, thanks to the outstanding andreu and mully lighting a fire under his own nuts in the second half

please, if you win the o-league this year, be more positive on the pitch, because last year's performance had me hoping waitak would make it this year

I must admit I agree with you. I thought ACFC's performance in 2011 was more positive because we forced their keeper into three fine saves even though we lost 2-0. One was Ivan's header cleared off the line and a great curling free kick from Mully. Last December we defended with numbers and created only one clear scoring chance near the end, which Dicko fluffed. We might have only lost 1-0 to the J League champion but we hardly threatened and mostly passed square or back.

I hope we go for a more attacking game plan if we make it to Morocco in December. We have the players to do it, it's just a matter of the right mindset.

I think city have improved plenty since Japan and I think that what Ramon is trying to achieve is now clicking into place. I saw it in the asbp playoffs and city were unlucky not to win. Although I wasn't at Sundays game I'm not at all surprised they won with the way they've been playing. A few people here suggested Ramon would or should be out a job at city before long which diss appointed me given what he's now beginning to achieve. The cwc comes at an unfortunate time of year for city, at the end of a long off season with only a few competitive games in the lead up so I hope they can somehow keep up the momentum leading up to it this year if they make it.

I think City are definitely stronger now than they were in December. I like Gustavo, the new Spanish striker, I think he is a fine finisher and Mario Bilen from Croatia looks a solid center back. I watched the replay of the O League game and thought they really got on top of Waitakere. I particularly liked the way they attacked with speed, which is sometimes lacking in our possession-first style of play. ACFC has some very experienced footballers in its first team now, albeit mostly imports, so hopefully we can pull off another 2009 in Morocco. I know ACFC will do everything it can to prepare the team.

i agree.  i watched most of sunday's game and they ooked very impressive.  i don't know whether waitak were asleep or what, but there was only one team in it.  and bilen looked class - it's always good to have a football playing left footed centre back - adds quality to the ball played into the middle

Waitak weren't asleep, they were stunned. Outpressed in midfield, left floundering in defence, wrapped up and robbed on attack. City have never played better. I reckon this new guy Bilen has made the guys in front of him raise their game. He kept looking for a foward receiver every time he got the ball, and was no slouch at moving into space himself. Ivan just couldn't stop grinning. Me ditto.

i agree.  i watched most of sunday's game and they ooked very impressive.  i don't know whether waitak were asleep or what, but there was only one team in it.  and bilen looked class - it's always good to have a football playing left footed centre back - adds quality to the ball played into the middle

Me ditto.

Marvelous!

Gracias. Es una lastima que te hayas perdido la fiesta.

Makes the O-League seem like a bit of a joke.
