I  am suprised they didn't market the asia trophy to all registered peeps with a NZ Address, but without them paying for it, sounds a logical thing to do...

Tried to ask a couple of question on their 'Live Chat' feature twice today and both times it timed out. And left me a message saying ...

"If you are receiving this message during our operating hours of 12 p.m. - 12 a.m. ET, 4 p.m. – 4 a.m. NZST, or during live games, please try to initiate live chat again as there may have been an issue that prevented your connecting to the live chat application"

Anyone else think $90 for a couple of highlight shows (of which I'm only likely to watch one per week) is a bit steep? Or are the shows actually going to be that good?

I asked:

I notice in your FAQs that you say on demand games will be available "until the next round - so basically a week". What does this mean for rounds that start midweek after some weekend fixtures (particularly over christmas this happens)?

and have no response as yet. Theyre almost better off just allowing people to email them questions.

Well one of them will be that 'Premier League Preview' Show that has been on SKY, where they briefly look at the weeks coming games and then have a segment where they seem to focus on some foreign player from a few years ago who has retired back to Sweden or France or somewhere.

According to Tim Martin - there are 'heaps' of magazine style shows that the EPL Produce that they'll offer. It would however be good to see some actual show names, descriptions etc before signing up...

The season starts in about 3 weeks!

Is that for the premium account? Doesn't that include video on demand whilst the cheapest option is only live games?

Nah, both platinum and basic say they contain on demand. Only difference is "All VOD Shows and Highlights"

From the terms and conditions

(a) Season Pass Platinum Package, being access to:

  • 380 English Premier League (“EPL”) matches (“Matches”) broadcast live and simultaneously as they are played (“Live Events”) and a repository of 250 Matches available for viewing on-demand (“On-Demand Events”)
  • EPL support programming including;:
    • 33 x 52 minute review Premier League Saturday Review shows
    • 33 x 52 minute Premier League Sunday Review shows
    • 18 x 52 minute Premier League Monday Review shows
    • 5 x 52 minute Premier League Mid Week Reviews
    • 33 x 26 minute Premier League Match Packs
    • 33 x 26 minute Premier League Preview shows , and
    • 52 x 26 minute Premier League World shows;
  • access to clipped highlights and condensed games
So I've heard of the review, preview and "world" shows. but I don't know what the "Match pack" is. it could simply be the the time between the saturday games, but I don't know. Sky only showed one review show per week (on a monday night I believe) which had highlights of all the game from the weekend. Now we'll be able to get 3, not sure if the content in each will double up though?

Also sky had 2 minute highlights (I think they were produced by the Premier League) for each game that they put on their website and anyone could watch. So it seems like to get these you need the platinum package now.

So are the shows just the preview and review of the round and then highlights (which IIRC is on TVNZ for free anyway). Yeah, $90 is too much

Just looking at the games potentially going to be on tv1. for the first 5 matchdays here are the number of games each of the traditional "big four" + man city and tottenham could feature in:

Arsenal 3

Chelsea 2

Liverpool 3

Man City 2

Man United 2

Tottenham 2

I think the first game will be United vs Swansea, as their are no real showstopper games on that first day, and it'll be Moyes' first league game in charge and the next chance for united to be on is mid-september (which conicides with Chelsea's first opporunity to be on).

Looking through every other team (bar Swansea, who have 3) have at least 4 games on Saturdays in the first 5.

OK so here are my observations, after a play this evening.

Viewing on demand full game of man city v Sunderland (Asia trophy match.)

I have slingshot unmetered, and selected the 3000kbps stream (fixed, not adaptive.)

Netstat shows the content was being served by callplus akamai nodes around 22ms ping from my home network. My home internet connection is - ADSL2+ (Fibre to the cabinet - approx 400m from house), Modem shows ~13Mbps Rated speed down / 964Kbps up.

Network stable through out viewing. No buffering, pausing at all. Not even once.

My htpc (CPU when showing full screen flash around 45% busy  Browser: Chrome - OS Windows 7.  HTPC is 5 years old, not a very expensive video card or CPU ) hooked up to a 46" Samsung /1080p via HDMI.

I would describe the image quality as slightly worse than sky hd, In terms of image quality. In static shots its comparable but during moments of fast panning/tracking you'll notice the image tearing and some stutter.

All in all, considering it means the end of 11am start delayed games its a good thing, just wish there was a higher bitrate stream than 3000kbps. If you only have Sky Standard Definition, its a no-brainer.

The ui is really clumsy with popup windows. Could learn a lot from YouTubeTV. If you use an htpc get used to needing to do everything via mouse. That said the Picture in Picture and 4 games at once in quarter screen views do look interesting, if unlikely to be used.

FFA, if you let me buy a league I will sign up and cancel sky tomorrow.

*edit* bugger still need ESPN for champions league :/

Hot tip. If you use opendns or Google DNS, stop doing so. Akamai* chooses the most relevant streaming node for you based on the location of your DNS server. Using off shore dns services like opendns will mean poor performance.

*I deliver services in my day job via akamai. I am not an employee of PLP/Coliseum

Basically the same performance, other than NFL has a 4500Kbps option which looks noticably  better.

Same UI, give or take, based on same platform.

Coliseum, give us this higher bit rate option please!

Is it possible that option isn't there for the pre-season game but that it might be there for the season proper? Just a stab.

Anyhow, for me personally this is looking better and better. Although I was initially dismayed at having to stump up extra cash on top of sky, I am now getting some value-add for that at least. 2 key things for my situation;

1: Improved quality - I don't pay the extra $15 per month for Sky HD but I do have an HD tv, so I'll be watching this in better quality than I was before YAY
2: Now I can watch whatever game I want, whenever I want, which is huge. Sick of waiting for replays on Sky. And super happy those FAQs someone posted cleared up the whole on-demand thing.

Now I better ring up and sort this with my provider... only getting 30gb per month as it stands, think I'll need a tad more than that!

Can anyone confirm whether I can view this through a PS3 browser?...

I'm still kinda on the fence tbh - as much as I love Saturday nights on the recliner watching EPL, with the advent of the Arsenal Digital Membership, and the TV1 highlights package (not to mention EweToob) I'll be well sweet for magazine/highlights shows... I guess the question for me is whether I wanna pay $150 to watch games live.

Knowing me, I probably will.

Would the Sommet Sports ChelseaTV/MUTV deals be exclusive?

The quality's not quite as good as mySky HD, but better than Sky Digital. Coliseum could fix this by offering a slightly higher stream. The stream is smooth, no pausing or stuttering like happens on some dodgy streams.

Basically, the benefit of being able to watch any game at any time outweighs the slight quality decrease compared to Sky HD.

I watched el clasico twice on ESPN last season.

Espn didn't have la liga last season. You might of been watching the copa del rey? Espn had la liga in previous seasons but not last season.

Also re rumours about the mutv or others being on sky, when I asked sommet if they'd confirmed the 2nd channel they said no and that they thought someone else was also trying to get similar deals done, so that was obviously sky. But if its not live and it's going to he delayed by 2 days I can't see much point

That is true, just go to ESPN Aus/NZ page and see all the complaints

SKY should actually look at getting rights for Barcelona and/or Real Madrid but cost maybe too prohibitive.

Maybe Colisiuem is trying to buy the rights for Man U and/or Liverpool to make those that may have waited 48 hours have to use them instead.

They have also made it tougher to contact them. The 'Live Chat' or 'Contact Us' goes directly to Neulion (based in New York) who are the technology people behind the concept, not the guys from Coliseum.

I've tried both - Live Chat doesnt work and they havent replied to my email from 3 days ago.

You really don't think the EPL could get 13000 subscribers in a country of 4million people (of which there are over 1.5million households)?

No wonder sky didnt value it highly...

I'd like to see a higher bitrate option, but much prefer this service to sky's model. Nothing worse than your team not appearing on sky till the 11am replay slot, or for fans of the smaller teams, not at all.

Struggling to understand why the quaility is so poor at 3Mbps. Just trying to work out what a Youtube 720p video is- purportedly only 2.5Mbps....

They put up the man city preview now. Clear your cache if you can't see it. They need to give us a higher bitrate option IMO.

apparently the site hasn't "officially launched" (tomorrow) so maybe they can fix some issues before the season starts.
