We play Uruguay in 3 weeks time, followed by Italy and Ivory Coast. Can anyone tell me what quality build up these lads are getting? Does anyone know who is actually going? #lambstoslaughter #NZFFail

From what I've been told, the players know if they are in the squad or not, just waiting an official media announcement from NZF. Apprently NZF are now only asking for $1k instead of $2k but the parents are still fighting it. In terms of build up, next to nothing.

DKP, you're right about everything in your post. The media announcement should happen today or tomorrow.

Is the tournament only 3 weeks away...

No squad named, no friendlies announced... not a good look.

Its unfortunate as there appears to be quite a few talented players in this group, Ridenton, Rufer and the boy thats signed for Ipswich etc.

$1k is worse, because it reinforces the fact that this is a philosophical stance. They don't NEED the money, they think that the parents should and can pay, so they're charging. Shocker.

The parents have the upper hand here. NZF can't turn around and say if you don't pay, we'll send those that can pay and have a second string outfit put together within 3 weeks only to embarrass themselves. Alternatively, it is a $200,000 fine by FIFA if NZF withdraw the team. Think they can go without $20,000 which they do not need as opposed to forking out $200,000 which they probably don't have.

Its probably just going to pay for the NZU20 side in the ASBP, which was yet another terrible idea from NZF

Nelson's Cory Brown has been selected as a defender. Currently at Ole in Wellington.

Anyone know anyone else in the squad?

It's even worse than that. If you're going to have a philosophical stance at least stand by it. Now it's just a half-arsed philosophical stance.

Fact is, even if you agree with the philosophy this was introduced at the wrong time for the wrong group of players. If they have to charge they should be charging a team at the start of a 2 year cycle, not the end.

Even better would be to introduce it as some kind of tax on future pro earnings or a straight out loan to be repaid later. At least that would shift the cost to when a player could better afford it.

NZF was never going to win with this policy.

No player should ever be charged for playing for their country.

I could perhaps forgive some smaller sporting codes like Softball, who might not have a steady inflow of cash, but NZF gets sponsorship, subs etc etc.

I feel a back down coming.

Rufer, Ridenton and Patterson are the stand outs that I have heard of.

Are there any other hidden gems in that squad??

And who is Tamupiwa... weird that a u17 player is unattached to even a local team.

finally, do they have any warm up games. I want to know that their money is being put to good use.

Clayton is fantastic. So is Tam. He was at APFA until very recently. I believe he is back in Wellington and had a run around with the Phoenix. I'm also a big fan of Alex Palezevic and Riley Kelliher.

It seems that this could be the best ever U17s or no? Usually it's not until the U20s that we start picking guys out as potential superstars (at a NZ level), but the general feeling across this team is that there's some gems.

South Island could only claim one player - Cory Brown - and he's at Ole.

The mainland has 25% of the population and only 5% of the places in the squad.

It's tough being a footballer from the Mainland when national coaches are in Auckland. Who was the last national coach from the South Island?

Need to analyse that stat over time for it to be meaningful.

I know a couple of lads from Welly who I think could have gone close, but none that I would say are dead unlucky to have missed out. So I reckon Bazeley has done a pretty thorough job.

Think you might be getting carried away. There are two big differences to previous U17s - Ernie has taken an interest, so a few of them have been looked at and of course Rufer has been picked up. That's created some hype. And Bazeley has tapped up most of them for the U20s ASB Premiership team, and the collective might of NZF has swung in behind them, so a few got a run for NZ 'A' as a bit of a "carrott"...

It's a good squad though. Could do really well.

In my opinion, and I do expect I'll get rubbish for this and being a minority of 1, having seen Patterson and seen how people rate him, I have to ask 'what is it?'. I do not rate him at all.

Well, I sort of agree with you JV. I don't think he is fantastic, but he is OK. I've just never seen a more selfish player than him.

if he can fix that, he will certainly look a lot better on the field.
