As I said, it did not necessarily go as expected but they dared to dream big and chase someone. Is every big name player going to be like that? I doubt it but you would expect that if you targeted players from the Premier League, you would more than likely come out on the right side rather than the wrong side with a player you bought out (assuming you managed to get one)

Interesting that this news drops almost simultaneously.

I really hope that the Jets were in the running for WeeMac but we beat them to it and so they are now left taking a punt on a crocked Flores because that's exactly the sort of thing that you'd expect the Phoenix to go and do.

In fact, it wouldn't have surprised me at all if today's news had been McGlinchey to Jets and Flores to Nix.

So big ups to the Nix for getting it right for once.

http://www.3news.co.nz/A-League-botch-McGlinchey-announcement/tabid/415/articleID/347768/Default.aspx

A-League officials have been left red-faced and scrambling after a story announcing All White Michael McGlinchey's signing with the Wellington Phoenix was prematurely posted to the website.

The story went up on Monday morning, saying the 27-year-old midfielder had secured an early release from his Japanese loan club Vegata Sendai and instead of returning to Central Coast Mariners had opted to spend two years at the Phoenix.

McGlinchey was born in Wellington but left as a one-year-old when his family returned to Scotland.

The story was later taken off Football Australia web sites

Phoenix communications manager Russell Gray says the story was pre-written about a week ago and was ready to go when McGlinchey's deal was confirmed.

However, it hadn't yet been confirmed and it appeared someone had seen the story, thought it was a good one and put it up on the website, where it was picked up by media.

Gray said the situation was "very, very tricky" as negotiations were still underway with the involved clubs and he could not say when it was expected to be confirmed.

McGlinchey has made 121 appearances for Central Coast Mariners since 2009 before he was loaned to the Japanese side earlier this year.

He has played 26 times for the All Whites and five games for Scottish youth sides.

NZ Herald and Stuff both running articles saying he's signed. Including the Herald including a quote from him..

"I'm really excited to be joining the Phoenix," McGlinchey said from Glasgow where he is taking a break with wife Rachel and nine-month-old son Max.

"Results may not have gone their way last season and there were a lot of injuries, but I was impressed by the football they were trying to play."

Well you would hope for the sake of Michael, that he had at least let CCM know what he was up to. If CCM were in the dark, its not a good look for him especially as he is under contract.

The Nix aren't allowed to approach a player with more than six months left on his contract without letting the club know, so I'm sure they are aware of it.

The fact that a press released was drafted and given to the FFA seems to indicate that its close to done.

But if he is up in January, and its the start of June, that's more than 6 months... Technically 7.... #pedant

And if they have been talking in May..... After all, he was talking to the guys in the AW camp...

Edit: I just re-read, must tell club of approach if more than 6 months. My bad.

Now that dark clouds are forming over the McGlinchey controversy does this mean Ernie is going to step up his pursuit of another hot ACFC talent - namely Sammy Burfoot? if so can we have a development fee this time please?

If he is under 24 and he gets sold by the Nix after signing (if he does) from AFC then you will get a cut. Until then your gratitude and thanks for Wellington having a professional team for him to play for will have to payment enough.

A-League teams pay a training fee to State League clubs for players they sign off them, so I assume we do the same.

Look at the quality of players that have come out to the HAL purely in name only. Yorke, Heskey, Fowler, ADP.... Ok they are 'big names' that did not necessarily do it but the point is, clubs dared to aim high. We should too. I'm not saying go after a big name for the sake of it but why not try to target a player that is quality or perceived quality. Yes Gareth has said this and Rob has said that but I also think they need to take a serious look around at the level of recruitment that some clubs are doing. MCFC, Sydney and Perth look to be better teams this year and those were the clubs we knocked about with at the same part of the table. At some point, if you throw enough mud at a wall, a bit will stick so we should try to aim high for our import slot in the hope that someone like Ifill says 'yeah, why not'.

If I were Ernie, I'd target every single striker on that list and throw them a bone. The chances are high they will all say no but if you get one that says yes....

List of All Foreign Players in the A-League to Date By Country:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_A-League_players

We'd do better to target say Dutch players than British ones though - British players generally have a poor track record when playing overseas going back to the days of Ian Rush and Luther Blissett who were hopeless in Italy in the 1980's. They don't adjust well to foreign playing styles and conditions - not many British players have exactly set the A-League on fire  - Ifill being very much an exception (he's technically a Barbadoes international anyway!).

Look at the list of 27 English players in A-League history, and most have been mediocre:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_A-League_players#England

Scottish players - 13 of them, mostly forgettable:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_A-League_players#Scotland

Look at the Dutch players in the A-League and most have been great - especially the recent ones such as Engelaar, Hersi and Jaliens. Patrick Zwaanswijk who retired last year, would be one of the best foreigners and best defenders in A-League history. Dutch players list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_A-League_players#Netherlands

Of the 35 Brazilians who have played in the A-League only a very small number could be called worthwhile:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_A-League_players#Brazil

No clue if there is any truth to this but a CCM poster on the Sydney forums, posted this

Why would they have done that?

Googled the guy, seems legit, commentates the CCM games on the radio (coast fm).

So the guy is insinuating that CCM was restructured to cut debt, and that the players union are involved.

Sucks for CCM fans if its true - odd that its on a Sydney forum and not the CCM forum or a general a league one.

If you take what you say is true Ryan (and it sounds like you have researched it) then surely McGlinchey would know that he is no longer under contract... I would also suspect that CCM would not be making noises about him being under contract as well.

I also think that the FFA would have an issue with this. Imagine you didn't want ADP on your team anymore. You change the legal entity, get 22/23 players to resign and then tell ADP - sorry mate.... You are then shot of his contract... It would create all sorts of craziness if you allowed it. I would suspect that the contracts would have some sort of agreement in principle with the FFA or new owners are bound to the existing terms/conditions etc.

I think a problem would only arise with the Union if ADP wanted to stay with the club and the move prevented him from doing that.

I wouldn't say I did a whole lot of research - I googled the guys username to see if he had any credibility and it turns out that he is a commentator for CCM games in the local radio station. I'm guessing that means he has connections to the club.

It's probably just a whole lot of crap. But there have historically been issues with the Mariners and money, and they took on a whole lot of debt to do some sort of development which didn't really pan out.

Apparently the new owner has a bit of a history of lying to the fan base / media about CCM, if  you look at the fans reaction to the tweet from the club it was all pretty much "just tell us the truth".

Maybe the sticking point for Mcglinchey is in Japan rather than Australia. Or maybe CCM don't agree with the above and want to fight it. Who knows, but smoke sometimes equals fire.
