Not exactly overwhelming because of a 0-0 draw between them and portugal in the first game. But guess you were right in the end haha. But we did do a lot better than North Korea in our group, so the TAB was a little wrong.

North Korea will be wishing they had hired Ryan Nelsen for the campaign.

So in reality us at 88 beating a team at 103 ,  2-1 is really about right and a fair reflection of the rankings.

Pretty funny this attitude, given who we are and our ranking of 150-something a few months ago. I dont think we're in any position to give anyone crap about rankings when any half decent footballing nation would say the same thing about us. I remember Bahrain's media labelling their loss to us as a 'National embarrassment'

The rankings are deceiving, some teams don't play enough games to give a true reflection of their strength. Oman has had 2 draws with Aussie, despite being ranked 2 places below New Caledonia.

No different than say woman's tennis in many ways, Williams' sisters generally regarded as best players over recent years but due to limited  matches they play, rankings rarely reflect this.

Checked out the FIFA ranking 'Comparison Calculator' for the last 4 years just for the hell of it.

Costa Rica: Highest 30 (July 2009), Lowest 72 (Oct 2012) Average 53

Jamaica: highest 38 (June 2011), lowest 83 (July 2010) Ave 62

Honduras: highest 34 (Feb 2010), lowest 72 (Sept 2012) Ave 49

Panama: highest 41 (March 2013), lowest 97 (Aug 2010) Ave 60

On last 4 years average it looks like Panama and Jamaica are improving; Costa Rica and Honduras are declining. If this actually means anything.

[NZ: highest 49 (Sept 2010), lowest 130 (May 2012) Ave 86]

Fair point. But something needs to be said about this, i.e. why AREN'T we performing better? Don't we have the best bunch of footballers in a generation? We've EPL captain Reid, we've Wood knocking on the EPL door, plus Smith holding his head up in the Championship, plus McGlinchey, Rojas and Smeltz doing us proud in Oz, plus Kosta on a fat Euro salary, plus Brockie near top A-League goalscorer, plus Vicelich with so much Euro experience ... plus Payne buzzing with promise... All of 'em are well up for it. All are fulltime pros. Yet we had the debacle of Honiara ... and we're still struggling to knock over New Caledonia (OFC locals & bit-time/part-time ASB for Christ sake!). RH lays down the plan so I reckon he's got a lot to answer for. So far the results are there - just. As in South Africa. (But not with the Nix). Jesus wept, the type of football we're playing with these tyros leaves a lot to be desired. Hoofball. Grind it out. Knock it long. Is this lack of confidence? Fear?  Whatever, RH seems to be happy with it. It's too late to get rid of him now, of course, now that we're in touching distance. But imagine if the NZFA had the balls to appoint someone with a bit of inspiration, a bit of panache, a bit of mongrel in insisting on us trying to get somewhere close to playing the beautiful game with these great guys we've finally got.

Anyway, bring on Jamaica/Panama/Honduras/Costa Rica, whoever. Let's see if they're any better.

If the side was able to play together more i think we'd be fine. ok that and and having depth in a few more positions, but really we've been bogged down playing OFC nations and China since May last year. We really do need to be playing games in these windows...Feb 6th was the last one we missed wasn't it. 10 windows before Nov against Concacaf side and we're only talking about matches in Sept

Money. We cant afford it. We cant afford to play in all these windows, we cant get experience without playing in every window. Most of the money we do get is pumped into grass roots. If we had a few hundred million like a lot of other countries we'd be alright.

We will always have periods well down rankings (ie 100 plus), as play fewer major point scoring games in Oceania and don't play many friendlies due to hassle of bringing a team together from diff sides of world. If left Oceania and had a team of largely euro based players like Australia then that would change somewhat, at least more opportunities for points and ranking climb

Would change slightly, but we still wouldnt be playing at every window under our current financial status. If anything it would cost us more having more players based in europe, for home games at least. Australias a big country with a large economy, with a professional league, and with FFA spending millions to prop up clubs. NZF on the other hand can hardly afford the $200k to bring a single international team into the country.

Scotland down 11 to 77. We'll overtake them with a couple more wins. Who'd a thought that in '82?

Can someone explain to me how we have climb 30 places to 57?

It covers a 4 year cycle. So we've dropped some time where we didn't play any games and replaced it  were we actually played and won a few games.

Looked at our games round there didn't play many but lost to Thailand round that time that would have been dropped but from the Fiji game till then we had played just Thailand and lost.  Had the confess cup this time so next month might rise some more?

Why bother looking at the rankings and making a comment if you are to lazy to read on the Fifa website how they work. Why expect someone else to do it for you?

Its no wonder you are baffled.

Knowing how the rankings work and knowing the reasons behind why we have jumped 30 places are two different things. I know how the rankings work, but I still had to attempt to work out why we jumped up by an unusually large amount.

For the record, it's because we didn't drop many points at all from this time four years ago compared to many of the teams in the 60-90 range.
