Sounds like it will be the Socceroos in September home and away.

And maybe some big name teams in Nth America in November. Have we ever played Argentina?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360651972/60-weeks-go-how-all-whites-road-2026-fifa-world-cup-shaping

Picking the Socceroos match will be in Wellington, All Blacks play Safa at Eden Park the same week so doubt they would want any overlap there.

Presume we would be the earlier match of the window, and match in Australia on the weekend? Exciting regardless to get some matches against quality on home soil again

Is anyone coming to Toronto for the Ukraine or Cote d'Ivoire matches?

"The All Whites haven’t beaten a European team since beating Georgia 3-1 in 2006."
He's forgotten the 1-0 win vs. Serbia in a friendly in May 2010 before the 2010 World Cup.
Serbia were then ranked tenth in the world.

Best game of football involving a kiwi club or national side I've ever had the joy of attending. I think Martinb was there too.

I remember us having a great evening post game hanging out with the Serbian fans who were buying us drinks (but it might have been the Slovenia game a few days later, memory letting me down now, too many beers on that Euro trip!).

Serbian fans might have been nice afterwards, but they weren't happy during - Nemanja Vidic had to get a microphone and ask them to calm down as they kept throwing stuff on the pitch!

I remember that well, I was sharkting myself in the stadium. Was super scared walking out but they were all good afterwards.

Ivory Coast or the Ukraine?
Which team will be tougher for the All Whites come June?
I rank Ivory Coast as the tougher proposition if they pick a strong side.

Ivory Coast are the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions.
Beat Nigeria 2-1 in the final in February 2024.
It will be cool for Chris Wood if he plays, coming up against his Forest team mates Willy Boly and Ibrahim Sangaré.
Seb Haller (Dortmund, on loan at Utrecht) can be an absolute monster goal-scorer when fit.

watching those highlights, how good was Smeltz! I'd forgot how deadly he was out in front...

It'd be amazing if we had him and Wood, both in their primes now.

Why didn't Smeltz never get a real gig overseas? I remember something about Turkey...
06 May 01:02
Smeltz's career was weird. Was going nowhere then an injury to Killen or someone earnt him a call up more because he was already un Europe than anything and he went and scored two goals.

From there he joined Ricki at the NIX and his career sort of grew from there.

I think maybe he didn't look to go back to Europe as his wife was settled here/in Aussie and it didn't work for him once. In the A League he could earn good minutes in a league he knew he was good enough to play in.
06 May 01:36
Smeltz is an Aussie and I recall an interview with him while he was in England, before the Wales game which was his big breakthrough. He really emphasised how freezing it was up there so no surprise he didn't go back. He was on marquee wages in the A-League which was probably better money than he would ever get in the lower levels there. There was of course his aborted move to China too wasn't there?

Squad to be named tomorrow for June games.

Payne & Roux both ruled out. Presumably Dalton Wilkins is still out injured as well.

People will hate the idea, but it is almost a waste having one of Boxall, Surman or Bindon on the bench with a back 4. Could Bindon play at least one of these games as a makeshift RB, with Payne & Roux out? I guess you give Elliot or Kirwan/Tuiloma first crack against Ivory Coast and see how they go.

Interesting comments that Sail maybe dumped for Tzanev. That's after Oli's fine game against Auckland recently for the Glory. Also Gray ahead of Kees Sims in the pecking order now?

And seems new dad Wood is going to be available, despite my thoughts Forest may want him to have a rest after a long season, and European football in a few months.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360696525/all-whites-depth-be-tested-perennial-problem-position-june-friendlies

Payne missed the Wellington Phoenix's last A-League Men match and their Australia Cup playoff with an injury and is also about to become a father.

Roux suffered an injury in training with the Central Coast Mariners shortly after receiving a three-match ban for elbowing Newcastle Jets defender Callum Timmins in the chest during the F3 Derby on April 12.

Auckland FC's Callan Elliot is expected to be the main beneficiary and receive his first callup since June 2023. While he has been stuck behind his captain, Hiroki Sakai, at club level, he has consistently impressed when given the chance.

Dane Ingham, Niko Kirwan and Bill Tuiloma will be the contenders to claim the other spot on offer in what is likely to be a 23-man squad, named this Thursday.

Right back has long been a problem position for the All Whites. While Payne and Roux have accounted for 16 of the 22 starts there under current coach Darren Bazeley, eight different players have been used there in the last four years.

At centre back,
Finn Surman is set to return after missing the World Cup qualifiers in March to nail down a starting sport at his MLS club, Portland Timbers. He has done so and then some, earning rave reviews from his coach, former England international Phil Neville.

He will miss a Timbers match while in Toronto and that makes it likely he will start at least one international, as Bazeley won't want to take him away for his club, then not play him.

Whether the 21-year-old's return means Tommy Smith – the fifth-choice centre back – drops out is unclear. Five centre backs is arguably one too many for a team that play with two, but Bazeley places a lot of stock in the Auckland veteran’s off-field leadership.

While
Ryan Thomas started nine of PEC Zwolle's last 10 matches in the Dutch Eredivisie, the October international window – where the All Whites will play in Poland and Norway – remains the target for his hotly-anticipated return.

Another striker, Moses Dyer, is believed to have put himself on Bazeley’s radar with his goalscoring form for Galway United in the League of Ireland, but isn’t in line to return just yet.

There
could also be a change in the third goalkeeper role, where Oli Sail has been the foil for the Al Whites’ No 1, Max Crocombe, and his deputy, Alex Paulsen, over the past 12 months.

Nik Tzanev would be the man to come in, with Henry Gray, the other option, set to play for the national under-20 team against Chile at the same time the All Whites are in action.
21 May 05:56
Seems silly to drop Sail for Tzanev.

Really hope Kirwan gets the callup instead of Ingham & Tuiloma. But probably a decent chance that none of those 3 get picked and Bindon backs up Elliot.
21 May 06:28 · edited 21 May 06:31 · History
Tuiloma got 60 odd mins (30 + 30) at RB for the AWs against both Mexico USA last Sept, coming on for Payne each time. BT a bit mixed I recall.

Verus the US he failed to closed down Pulišić for their goal, but from memory also did some good things, launching an attack or two.

He likely gets a run in the US Open Cup for Charlotte tomorrow. Maybe's he's asked his coach if he can play RB!
21 May 07:48
For these games I’d go:

Wood
Cacace - Singh - McCowatt
Stamenic - Bell
FDV - Bindon - Surman - Kirwan
Paulsen

Crocombe will probably start in reality and Rogerson, Old, Just and Kosta all a chance to start over Singh and McCowatt.

Could also argue for a Boxall start but I wanna see that Bindon/Surman combo.
21 May 08:44 · edited 21 May 10:25 · History
I'd have 9 of those in my lineup. McCowatt needs to earn his starting spot back from the bench after stinking up the pitch in the last window (and that is putting it kindly). I'd have Kosta or Just or Rogerson instead of him. And would prefer Crocombe myself.

Edit: would also add that you could easily pick any of our 4 best CBs in any combination, but having the young guns being the pair is the most exciting

Man you are overplaying McC being out of nick in March. Guy had just returned from injury, and was short of match sharpness/fitness. He's in great form at the moment playing at a very decent level.

The All Whites recent goal scoring record against top 100 sides is woeful. Going back to Peru in June 2022, it's 16 matches for 6 goals!!

And that includes 2 home matches verus a pretty average China (now ranked 94th), for 2 goals with 1 an oggie. Plus you have Wood's pen v Congo & Waine's jammy faceplant v USA. I did exclude the Qatar abandonment. Sorry Marko

It's a really piss poor record. So for McCowatt to have scored twice against bigger teams (Ireland in 2019 & Sweden in 2023) puts him in very good company. Really only Garbett (China & Ireland late 2023), matches that.

To me Singh is the guy who needs to prove himself when the squad assembles. Hasn't played in a month. Is he injured? His club Leiria lately seemed to go better without him. Just may even start ahead of Sarpreet, if Baze wants someone to play central.

But really I'd make room in there for Old. Excited to see how he could go with Wood & Libby. He's hardly played with either, so time to give them a chance to gell.

And Garbett who knows, how good he'll be. Must be 6 months now, just training and playing age group stuff at Breda. But he's a favourite of Bazeley. Was his Paris Olympics captain. Plus Matt G makes things happen, and as the AWs recent history against the bigger nations shows, some sort of spark is often badly needed.
21 May 12:26
I forgot about Old when making my previous comment. I remember Old's most recent appearances for the All Whites were in the Nations Cup, where he played LW and did not play well and was outshone by Randall. I haven't seen him play in France but apparently he has been popping up on the right? But he seemed to do his best work in a sort of number 8 position at the Phoenix.

Baze and the team seem committed to the 4-2-3-1 which doesn't really have 8s, rather 2 6s (Bell & Stamenic) and a 10 (Singh). So I'd like to see him on the right and see what he can do there. Also would be cool to see us try more of a 4-3-3 at some stage, with Bell (or Rufer) sitting and Old & Stamenic with a little license to surge forward at times to assist the front 3, particularly if Singh isn't on it and needs to be dropped.

As for McCowatt, I am being serious when I say I think he put in, in successive games, against really low quality opponents, the two worst footballing performances that I can remember ever seeing. Bar none. Utterly abject. Made us worse for being on the pitch in those games. There has to be consequences for that. Would send a terrible message to the squad that somebody can play like that but walk into the next starting XI because he plays in Denmark.
21 May 13:04 · edited 21 May 23:11 · History
Who cares what Old did on a bumpy goat track (making dribbling difficult) in Vanuatu, or what a half fit, rusty McCowatt did against New Caledonia. We ain't playing those games no more. We never learn anything when the AWs play in OFC. It's now all about a plan to somehow try and break down, plus score against bigger teams than us. All very very different

It's about what our squad are doing now, what form they are in, and what level they are playing in week in week out.

All Old wanted to do last June, was get the job done, and avoid injury before his big move to France. If his club coach thinks he can create something against PSG or Monaco, then yes I’d find a spot for him to start for the AWs.
21 May 17:14
The Ukraine squad is out. A few big names missing, but I saw this characterized as a “B” squad and half of their regular starters are there, so I wouldn’t consider it that at all.

They’re missing fullbacks Vitaliy Mykolenko from Everton and Yukhym Konoplya of Shakhtar Donetsk. Mykhaylo Mudryk from Chelsea and Artem Dovbryk from Roma are both absent in attack and Ruslan Malinovskiy from Genoa is also not included.

Lunin in goal, Tymchuk, Zabarnyi from Bournemouth, Zinchenko of Arsenal, Shaparenko from Dynamo Kyiv and Yaremchuk from Olympiacos are all key players in the full team. They should be pretty strong.

Canada squad is also out, but since we don't play each other I didn't imagine you'd care.
21 May 19:12
Talovierov too has come off a great second half of the season, as I'm sure Marto could attest

I can't get over the fact that Shakhtar Donetsk haven't played at home for 11 years because "home" is occupied by Russia

Defenders: Tyler Bindon, Michael Boxall, Liberato Cacace, Francis de Vries, Callan Elliot, Nando Pijnaker, Tommy Smith, Finn Surman, Bill Tuiloma
Midfielders: Joe Bell, Matt Garbett, Elijah Just, Ben Old, Alex Rufer, Sarpreet Singh, Marko Stamenić
Forwards: Kosta Barbarouses, Callum McCowatt, Ben Waine, Chris Wood

Not a lot of shocking selections in there, more the omission of Rogerson has a surprise.

I think Bill over Kirwan is a tough call. Last time he was in the squad he looked seriously out of shape carrying too many pounds. Has hardly played many minutes this season as well.

It’s not his natural position and I  can’t see this guy being the right back in any way moving forward.

Auckland will rise once more

21 May 23:35 · edited 22 May 00:18 · History
Big big opportunity for Callan Elliot. Waine will need to prove his worth.

Perhaps Tuiloma's French language skills got him the edge on Kirwan's Italian.
Billy T can listen in to what the Ivorians are talking about.

Garbett hasn't played for months now, but he has a knack of making things happen. Something AWs may well need, to create a goal or two.

Be nice if Ryan Thomas flew over to Toronto for a few days. Took his boots for some light kick abouts, sat on some team meetings. Coming up 6 years since his last AWs involvement. Likely never met half the squad before.

Wouldn't hurt to invite Ronan Wynne into camp, as he seems a potentially promising future RB option.

Sail's form in goal towards the end of the A League was arguably his best for a while... and he doesn't get picked unlike previous squads??

Tzanev, has just been released and has barely played and gets picked?? Weird, surely this guy needs to be looking for a gig somewhere rather than sitting on pine??
22 May 00:30 · edited 22 May 00:41 · History
I was surprised to see Singh, the fact he hasn’t played in roughly a month I assumed he must be injured….. maybe he just got dropped completely?
I’m a Waine fan, but he really needs to start firing as I do agree Rogerson has been unlucky. But pretty much what I think most of us expected this squad would be.
Players I would like to see- Thomas, hope nz football are thinking along the same lines as coochiee and get him over to meet the team etc and he makes himself available for the next window.
McGarry- was playing at a decent lvl in the Greek league even if his team wasn’t doing great.
Kirwan- I’m surprised he didn’t get the call.
Just my opinion.

Rogerson very unlucky to not be there. Smith is unlikely to go to the cup and they should be looking to transition him into a mentor role now, and stop "giving" a place in the squad to him.

He's got Boxall, Bindon, Pijinaker, Surman and even Bill ahead of him. Do we need that many CBs?

Also Garbett lucky in my eyes..  He brings a lot of energy to the team but the guy hasn't been playing at all. I would have dropped him and opened that spot up for Rogerson/Randall or even Dyer.

Sounds like we won't see Thomas until the October window. Games verus Norway & likely Poland in Europe. Nice and handy for him.

September seems like it will be the Socceroos, and/or some other AFC teams. No AFC WC qualifying in that window from memory.

I guess with Thomas's body & the long flights a rushed 6-7 day trip downunder in Sept, around his club commitments, is not the best idea.

But all the more reason to get him over to Toronto now, given his season with Zwolle is finished, and he can take his time getting for Canada if just for a few days.

100% this.

I fully expect Smith to be named in the World Cup squad next year too - For the life of me I don't know why. He needs to stop getting a free pass to the national team when he's fifth choice CB at best.

Bill Tuiloma, Garbett and Waine lucky to be included in my opinion too. So much for the 'have to be playing week in, week out' notion that has been mentioned by Bazeley previously.

I think when the hugely experienced Thomas hopefully becomes available the logic to keep Smith in the squad as a player, is dead and buried. Time to join the coaching staff.

Tuiloma is only there because Payne, Roux & Wilkins are all out. Neither Kirwan or Ingham offer really strong compelling cases as alternatives.

Waine is yes lucky.

But Garbett makes things happen. He has real self belief & a combative attitute. So close to creating a Wood goal against Costa Rica. Scores against China at the ROF and Ireland in Dublin.

The AWs goal scoring record against top 100 teams recently is awful.

Since Peru in June 2022, it's 6 goals - being oggie, Garbett (both China 2023), McCowatt (Sweden 2023), Wood (pen verus Congo 2023), Garbett (Ireland 2023) & Waine (jammy faceplant USA 2024). Think I have that right.

The Garbett x2 and McCowatt (Garbett assist) goals are the only real created goals from open play, in those 16 games. Also at the Paris Olympics Garbett scores against Guinea (2-1 win) and has the assist for Randall's goal against the USA (4-1 loss).

Matt G provides one of the few scoring/creative threats the AWs have. Hopefully he's got some level of match fitness, even if it's off the pine.

Eli Just maybe scoring goals for fun against Fiji and Austrian youth prospects, but he's running the risk of Rojas & Barba like, and having a bit of a toothless record against bigger teams. Hopefully he's reading this and shuts me up in Toronto!

Kirwan has a slight niggle appparently, helps to explain why Tuiloma is in over him. He's also far more local and cheaper to fly to and from the camp.

Only disappointments in the squad is that Smith is still a passenger and that it would have been better to drop Waine and Garbett and reward the club form of Rogerson, Dyer or even Mata. Would prefer to see a bit more ruthlessness from Baze and less favouritism. I'd have kept Sail rather than bring in Tzanev too but that's inconsequential.

Garbutt did create a Wood goal v Costa Rica, not "so close". was the incompetence of VAR ref

Talovierov too has come off a great second half of the season, as I'm sure Marto could attest

He’s been an absolute star for us (Argyle). The sort of player I really wish the Nix would sign. Top bloke by all accounts too.

So failing an absolute calamity in Saudi, the Socceroos are off to the World Cup.

Wonder if that means NZF will get their wish of a pair of Trans Tasman friendlies in the September window.
