So what so do the Spanish, the Brasilians etc.etc.

Look at it this way they chucked all they had at us and we held them and scored the only goal of the match so stop being all doom and gloom and look to us betaing them at home.

Flippin heck even Kevin Fallon thinks we will beat them.

it just pisses me off.

and yes, that is what i am disappointed in - we held them off !!!! it seems like that was the game plan.

WE HAVE TO WIN !!!!!!!!!!

you don't go into a game looking to 'hold off' the opposition.

Have you been listening to anything Ricki was saying in the lead up to the match...
simple the objectives were to keep the tie alive and get any away goal.. okay we didnt achieve the latter...

But We didnt go into the match looking to hold off the opposition otherwise we would've played a 4-5-1....

Yea i think at times we sat back and invited pressure onto ourselves but you've got to understand the occasion and the nerves, its a play off for the world cup for crying out loud and i reckon this was a great result in a foreign land against technically gifted opposition..

Going forward as soon as mcglinchey came on it gave us that edge and he needs to start in Wellington for Brown

ok then, you think Elliot was quality today ?

He and Brown played well.

Yes you are right that they did not pass well and did not create chances but that was not their job today, their job was to bring a physical presence & to break down Bahraini attacks and they did those well

haven't read the posts since last night - so this might be repititive but for mine..

delighted! - i'd have taken that result before k.o.(and on that basis i can't turn around and criticise Ricki's tactics)

it'll be tough to beat them or hold them to a score-less draw - but i think we'll do it

I'd like to see McGlinchey given more time and Bertos to play in his usual position

I was pleased with Paston's work (booking was a farce!)

Great to have the Admiral's leadership - hope he's fit for 2nd leg (he's the least replaceable player - though Paston's impt with Mossy's ban)

and the ref should have slapped their number 9

Of course we looked more attacking when he came on, his job is to be a more attacking player and we changed the way we played. That doesn't mean what Elliott did was less though, it just means his game and what he was asked to do was different to McGlinchey.

do you think Brown and Elliot together created enough in the mid-field for the 3 strikers ?

because i believe Mcglinchey did more running and created more in the mid field than Brown and Elliot put together.

you must have noticed the difference when little mac came on ??????

if you leave elliott and replace brown with Mcglinchey i believe they will end out working well together.

sure, Brown or Elliott has to sit out, but because Herbert loves tim so much, i belive Elliot will be benched.

bring him on when we are winning 5-1 and he can do as many pass-backs as he likes and i won't mind. it's when we are supposed to be in an 'attacking' mood he kills everything.

Elliot was a bit slow at times...Was tempted to say 3 in the middle (Elliot, Mac and Brown), but then the impact Wood made when he came on was also good..Smeltz had a quiet game, but good touches in the second. I didn't notice Killen that much, but he seems to be getting rated. What did he do?

I nearly kicked my tv when Paston got yellow carded and not the Bahraini player. What a joke. As for people talking about diving, yeah it was disgusting but we are from a nation where football is a physical sport and our national squad MUST adjust if we ever want to compete in world events like the WC and Confederations Cup.

i'm sorry, but i believe they did not do a very good job. Countless times they let the Bahrainians turn a full 360degrees with no pressure what so ever. Sure you can blame the climate but these are professional footballers ffs.

the NZ defence is not great (lets be honest here) and we can not afford to sit back and defend all the time. Which is why i recommend we keep attacking.

but Elliot (especially) does not offer that.

Some notes.

1. Bertos can not play RB, he should have played where Smeltz did.
2. Smeltz did not get into the game enough and should have played central behind the other 2
3. Wood is Quality
4. McGlinchey is Quality
5. Sigmund is Quality
6. Nelsen is Quality
7. With three strikers, we looked very dangerous when Lochhead and Bertos played those diagonal crosses to the far post. More of them and I'm sure we would have scored.

guys the yellow card was NOT FOR TIME-WASTING !!!!

the ref gave a free kick for the incident before hand but paston thought it was 'play on' and kicked out his hands.

- you can't kick out of your hands on a free kick = yellow card.

1. The keeper cannot be touched
2. Then why no yellow card for the free kick from Bahrain when the ball was moving in the second half?

I'll think you'll find Lochhead's deliveries were really dangerous tonight and I think he played the ball to the far post that Smeltz chose to knock across to Fallon

there was only one (maybe a 2nd or 3rd) delivery which was dangerous. the rest were either too high, too low or straight to the keeper. (not that he crossed a lot in this match)

I must disagree still. It's exactly the same situation as taking a free kick with a rolling ball, surely it should be retaken without repercussion.

From where I was sitting, it looked like the ref thought Paston was taking the piss, in an attempt to waste some time, by hoofing it from his hands after the free-kick had been given . Not saying I agree, but I reckon that's why he got the yellow card.

I can't be arsed trawling through every page but I thought the AWs were average, at best. Gave away far too much cheap possession and a good team would've murdered them.

However, we got the result we wanted so now it's game on in Wellington and I'm sure we'll see a whole new AWs in terms of tactics.  Get in there, should be a cracker.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I really think that Paston was unfairly awarded a yellow. The ref blew the whistle and ran to the player who hit Paston, but did not signal a free kick.  how was Mark supposed to know? Also he took the free kick from in front of the mark by quite a bit. Maybe that should have been another Yellow? That would have been an interesting call. I don't see how it is a yellow card offence anyway. Where in the rulebook does it say it is worth a yellow card???

a) Football doesn't have rules, it has Laws
b) Timewasting comes under the umbrella of Unsporting Behaviour, which basically covers anything you like from looking at the ref in a funny way to having a bad haircut, and is a yellow card offence

No the best game ever played by the AW's but a clean sheet is a clean sheet and a draw away at the 5th placed Asian team is not be sniffed at.

Perhaps we've been lucky this time [for once], so let's make sure that in the second leg we take the competitions points by merit.

One thing I didn't like was how Bertos and Smeltz had to drop constantly out of their position in order to defend and start the play respectively. I think it's sort of pointless to play Leo at RB for the simple reason that he's a winger. And Smeltz should have been always on the edge/into the box when we had possession and not in the middle of the park. I thought that Fallon/McGlinchey should have done that for him.

I can't see a thread about it, but I thought the TV coverage appalling. Poor directing etc from the Bahrainian end and dire commentary from Dewhurst. I'm guessing he wasn't even at the game. Is he always this bad? I don't tend to see Phoenix home games on the box.

For a team/country that was "hyped' in the media as being dangerous down the flanks, you'd think Bahrain would've had a wider pitch...it was tiny.

Also supposedly better technically with a superior passing game, how many times did they play the aimless long ball in the first half especially? Comparatively we played or tried to play the better passing game I thought, and tho far from a complete performance, jeepers we are 90 mins and a decent effort at home in front of the best football supporters in NZ away from going to the FREAKING WORLD CUP, WOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Tired of negativity about us, we are minnows and it was great result for a minnow team, am stoked...some on here should go back to living under their bridge.

Austria gooooooooone, come on the AWs!
