You are dreaming if you think that Reid is West Hams top player. Sure is is pretty good, but top player, hardly.

I'd go Smith over Reid, simply because Winston's been "injured" or unavailable far too often, Tommy is always up to play with the All Whites, and that counts for something in my book.

Oh please. It would be fantastic if Reidt et al played every single game for us, but the fact is we are always going to be missing 1 or 2 for friendlies. Just have a look at the big European nations and how many regulars they have missing for those kind of matches. So long as we have the key players for the big matches, that's the main thing.

On those grounds we should never have had Ryan as captain, espcially when Ivan would always turn up and is a great leader and captain.

I see Winston as our captain, I think Tommy needs to start leading Ipswich before us.  Honiara says all in my books (and I'm not forgetting the "up yours NZ" from Ryan and Winston during that campaign by no showing).

To be fair though we dont play at every window like most European countries, so Reid should be playing every single friendly that we have locked in - hes getting enough time off international duty as it is. The other problem with him missing too many of these games is not having our top side play together enough.

Also I wonder what the crowd numbers are going to be like for this match?

At those prices, not sure it will be that big. Hopefully being a Friday night more students turn up, and the local football community steps up.

Since when has that ever been applied to the Fever Zone?

If you were there on Sunday you would have realised that the Zone in Dunedin wouldn't have been anything had the core group of travelling 40-50 had been placed together. Well done to every one of you - take it from me that the team really appreciated your efforts.

All Whites named for March qualifiers
Ricki Herbert has named a 19 man squad for the final two matches in the third stage of FIFA World Cup qualifying against New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands later this month.
March 6, 2013
AUCKLAND – The crucial match against New Caledonia at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on March 22 is Herbert’s focus with a win guaranteeing the All Whites a place in the intercontinental playoff in November.
The All Whites currently top the Oceania standings with a perfect four wins from four matches, but a resurgent New Caledonia have pulled up behind New Zealand in the standings following a pair of wins in the October window.
The All Whites accounted for New Caledonia 2-0 in Noumea last September but despite their dominance at regional level Herbert isn't taking the game lightly.
"There are no easy games in international football – we’ve proved that in recent years and also had a timely reminder of it from New Caledonia at the OFC Nations Cup in Honiara last year," Herbert said.
Herbert has resisted the urge to name his captain, preferring to wait until the squad assembles in Dunedin on March 19.
Suspensions could be an issue for Herbert who already has Ben Sigmund sidelined for the New Caledonia match after he picked up his second caution in the qualifying campaign against Tahiti in Christchurch last year.  Sigmund will be available for selection in the Solomon Islands.
In fact, no fewer than ten All Whites in the squad are walking the suspension tightrope with Reid, Smith, Hogg, Tony Lochhead, Michael McGlinchey, Shane Smeltz, Chris Killen, Ivan Vicelich, Jeremy Brockie and Chris Wood all sitting on a yellow card.
A further caution during the any of the remaining qualifying matches will result in a suspension from the next fixture, including the intercontinental playoff.
The core of the squad is retained from previous world cup matches with Ian Hogg recalled into the group.  Teenager Cameron Howieson who was called into the All Whites squad for the November international with China has been named in the Junior All Whites squad to contest the OFC U-20 Championship which will be held in Fiji during the international window.
Herbert has selected Wellington Phoenix captain Andrew Durante in the squad, subject to FIFA approval, with New Zealand Football High Performance Director Fred de Jong erring on the side of caution with regard to his eligibility.
"Andrew is now a New Zealand citizen and New Zealand Football will continue to work through the process to allow him to play for the All Whites as soon as possible," said de Jong.
The winner of the four team Oceania round robin stage will progress to a two-legged intercontinental playoff against a North and Central American nation for a place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Take our best performing centreback and move him to a position he has not played in before in any form of football. Solid move that!

I think Durante could play as a central midfielder. I think he has the skill set for it and we have a gaping hole there. Only real issue would be how he plays without being able to see the entire field.

If Dura's clearance doesn't come thru in time, will they call up another defender?

Normo's coming home

Predictable squad named, no new blood apart from Durante (who is kind of "old" new blood)- and notably no Fallon again.

Defence: should be well adequate for Pacific opposition with all that professional experience there.

Midfield: the perennial NZ weakness of lack of creativity and goal-scoring ability (apart from McGlinchey who is creative - note they've named Rojas as a forward). Interesting to note that of the five midfielders named, with 167 caps between them, they've only scored NINE goals.

Forwards: Smeltz and Wood the only proven goal-scorers for the AW's named (Smeltz: 48 apps./ 23 gls.; Wood: 29 apps./ 10 goals)

Could be problematic for the inter-continental play-off if either or both get injured / suspended. Otherwise we are relying on: Killen (most of whose 14 goals came early in his AW's career against Pacific teams but doesn't score many now), Kosta: 2 goals in 17 apps, Rojas: 1 goal in 13 apps or Brockie: ZERO goals in 35 apps (it's true he's not been used much as an out-and-out striker, but still a lame AW's goal record).

However, it's going to be fascinating to see whether Brockie and Rojas who have been in unprecedented (for them) goal form in the A-League, can now for the first time in their careers, transfer that to the All Whites...

Hardly say mid is perennial weakness. Right back is!

Keat needs a club fast. Clapham unlucky and howieson & fenton show theirs depth there albeit inexperienced

No.  They have been going with 18 usually so Dura has been added to that in pre for a hoped for clearance.
