Read somewhere that Sky Sport 1 are televising the Peru game. Mods can correct in need.

Here's Peru's squad in camp. A lot of familiar players from 2017. Well coached, but no real big stars. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" type side, who's core like Costa Rica have been together a long time now. 15 players with 30+ caps. FIFA ranking 22, about same as 2017 from memory.

5 guys in the MLS, also Mexico Liga X, Argentina, Chile, a few in Europe & the Middle East, rest Peru's domestic league. About as good as it gets for a Ticos dress rehearsal

He seems to like the heat and sun based on that interview! That would rule out a Wellington return (not that Melbourne is always great!).

“The reality is I'd rather be myself than the Costa Rican coach [Luis Fernando Suárez] at the moment,” Hay said.

“He's under a huge amount of pressure to win. There's a genuine expectation.

“Everything we're reading, seeing coming out of Costa Rica, they're expecting them to win and to win with style, but I don't think it's going to be quite that easy, so if I was him, I'd be having a few sleepless nights at the moment.”

I believe it’s available as a PPV on Fite.tv outside of NZ, not sure how much it costs though

So what's the likely lineup, and the lineup people want to see? For me, I'd play 4 at the back, rather than 5, and set up with attacking intent. I feel like we have to be positive if we are going to upset Costa Rica, so why not try that approach tonight. I feel Hay will set up with 5 at the back though.

It's on Sky Sport 2 at 3:15am.
But there's def another 'way' of watching it if you don't want to fork out $ or don't have Sky

I reckon it’ll be:

Sail;
Payne, Tuiloma, Reid, Pijnaker, Cacace;
Stamenic, Bell, Rojas;
Wood, Barbarouses

Peru will have majority of the ball and chances, and key preparation will be to avoid conceding to try get a blueprint for Costa Rica, so a lot of work without the ball.

I’d prefer to see Tuiloma on the left and Boxall on the right, as MLS is a very solid level that seems to not get the respect it deserves because it isn’t European, and Pijnaker hasn’t even started the last few games in Ireland. Pijnaker has looked solid, but nothing we’ve played will come close to Peru (or Costa Rica), like Curacao, Bahrain, Gambia, Jordan and the OFC teams are hardly elite, and he could be in a sink or swim scenario. I think he’ll start because, including the Olympics (which does exclude a few players tbf), he has probably only played less minutes than Wood, so is as close to a fixture as anyone.

In the keepers, I prefer Marinovic, but I have no real issue Sail so it’s a toss up for me.

I think Barbarouses and Rojas’ experience will come in favour for them. They’re two of only a handful of players to have played tough internationals in front of crowds, and starting too many young players could play into the hands of the opponents. I feel Barbarouses is the likelier of the two to not start though, because he’s come off his worst A League season, so Greive or Just might get the nod.

If it’s a dress rehearsal in getting at least to 90 minutes level by whatever means necessary, then I can see it being close, 2-0, maybe, to Peru. If they try go toe-to-toe attacking wise, then it could be a bit higher.

Won’t be what we play but I think I’d like to see:

Greive/Just - Wood - Rojas
Cacace - Bell - Stamenic - Kirwan
Tuiloma - Reid - Boxall
Sail

Can’t decide on Greive, Just or Barbarouses for the LW spot

Just to start, Greive on the bench? I think both give us something different and have had a good year.
That seems close to our best 11 talent-wise right?
Though yeah Pijnaker’s passing offers a point of difference.

Really looking forward to today's game, thus my plan to sleep and get up has been replaced by reading the forum!!

I think Grieve should start personally. His running behind the line will work well alongside Wood and hopefully create more space for Rojas to exploit as I expect him to drift in and play more centrally at times.

Absolute key to be defensively solid as fudge early on. The nerves will off the scale first 20 mins for the players. Remember that Reid/Marinovic mixup that so nearly concede an early goal against Peru in 2017

Concede early against CR and that will just mean they control the match and bring out all that frustrating gamemenship in spades

Rock solid early, grow into the match, get rid of the nerves. So yes full backs likely to be a bit deeper early on before going forward too much

Sail in goal. Kirwan at RB. 3 CBs. Tommy Smith not Boxall or Pijnaker. Garbett in a 3 man midfield. Greive alongside Wood

Soccerway as Cacace currently on the right. Lets assume that's an error!

Smith over PJ for his experience. Both leg peggers.

Holy shark, it's in a different continent, what's the connection between Peru and Spain that so many of them live there (I assume they are locals!)?

Maybe if the players squint hard enough during the anthems they can pretend the Sea of white peru jerseys in the stands are actually fans kitted out in al whites jerseys.

Not that I have any qualms with it but was surprised to see Garbertt in the starting line up. Absolutely making his case for the Costa Rica game already though. Good on the lad!

Only 1 A-League player on the field! Probably see a few later with the subs though.
