He has no positional awareness for the role he is meant to be playing so what the hell does he do at OM? I get that players can have a bad game but he is just showing absolute ZERO about himself in that role. I don't think Payne any better but he will at least stand in that hole in front of Durante. Dan Keat anyone? Jesus Christie would do a better job (exageration)

Moss for MoM followed by James.

About time we dropped Durante, has yet to have a good game for the AWs (might have been all right against SA I guess).

Considering Boxall/Sigmund are our back ups let's hold off before dropping Durante as bad as he looked.

Gaps all over the show. Link between defence - midfield pretty much non existant.

Either people weren't doing their job or tactically we got it wrong.

Welcome to the All Whites Mr Hudson.

He has got some work to do. The game went as I expected. Our first hit out for a long time.....most of our the players are in their off season and we have a  new coach coming in with new ideas. I think people are being overly critical. The Uzbecks are a bloody good side....and they are in season.

I thought our central defense went well for the first half. We forced them wide and then dealt well with the crosses.....they resorted to long shots for most of the first half. Second half they moved the ball wide and then were very smart bringing late runners centrally. We got really caught out by that tactic.

Moss was excellent as was Winston. James looks great everytime he pulls on an AW jersey. It was a tough day at the office for our wide defenders. Doyle had a rough intro to international football.....but he never gave up trying. There was way too many noncontested balls coming in from the flanks. As I mentioned their late central runners caused us problems......part of that can be sorted out by coaching and part by personel.

Our midfield was not great. Weemac looked like someone has only had one game in the last six months. Tuiloma was guilty of failing to track back and defend for the second goal. I think we need to cut Bill some slack......how can you expect a 19 yo to play like "the godfather" on the back of a season playing regional age group football in France. The point of these practice games is to try players out.....some will step up, others won't.

In the meantime I would like to see the likes of Keat and Henderson get a look in next time. They are playing regular pro football for Div one teams.....they should have something to offer the Aw's IMO

Forgot to mention.....Brockies goal  LOL

Good team goal....nice lead up work...flick on from Wood and Stevens drove well into the box...drew the defense on the 5yard box and squared to Brockie who tapped it in.

Congrats to Brockie for finally breaking his duck.....1 goal now in 42 international.

Stevens looked good for the last `10 mins......moved the ball forward well. Our only other chances were from a Wood header that nearly snuck in low and Costa lashed a shot across the front of goal.

I have to disagree with you on this. Its international football and while the point you make about friendlies and testing players has merit, players still need to do their jobs and lets not make excuses for them. There are days we will get outclassed and today was one of them. Being outclassed and giving a good account vs being outclassed and not turning up are two different things. We were certainly the latter. They are a good side I agree but we just offered nothing. There was a vocal group that cried 'but Tuiloma plays DM for OM and that's his true position so we should play him there and that will fix our problems'. It got louder even more so after Payne played in that spot at Mt Smart. Now I didn't expect a performance like the godfather but he got sucked out of position all day and actually looked like he was well out of his depth. If anything, he showed that he is most definitely not a DM because he had no positional awareness for the role. If that's the one he plays at club level then you default to that and as he has been playing there, I expected a modicum of understanding. It makes me ask if he gets tested at all as a DM in the comp he plays at or if in fact (and I think is more likely the case) he is just not a DM at all. He was not playing there in NZ and I can see why. All he needed to do was live in front of the back two in that hole, screen them and if anyone came into that zone on the ball, track them or if any runners came through, track them and then hand off. Turn the ball carriers away, harry them 5 yards up and then hand over and back off but DO NOT leave that hole. He just did nothing resembling that and as I made a particular point of watching him, he just roamed like grazing cattle looking for the next piece of grass. You can argue that he plays regional football but whats Doyle come from? He was exposed but not as badly at Tuiloma.

.

As Sackofspuds said, Either people weren't doing their job or tactically we got it wrong. It could well be that Hudson got Tuiloma tactically wrong and his performance was the product of coaching but considering he plays there for club, I am not so sure. Hudson for all his noise he made in his conferences, showed that he did not do his research or watch hours of football because I think the players he put on the park were the ones that excite him and are attacking. That's all well and good but I think he figured out his best attacking 11 and said 'fuck it' without regard to some other facets of the game that needed attention and subsequently got exposed. Where else has McGlinchey ever played so deep? Not even in Ricki days did he sit that deep and certainly has not for club. That might be harsh but there was not one player in front of the back 4 that offered any defensive steel at all. Chris James ran his bollocks off but in so much as you can mow down everything, you need others to help out and I think he ran himself off the park. In fact I think the team may have worked better had James sat deeper and McGlinchey sat higher but then what do I know.

.

This game really highlighted the ugly sister that we can't hide anymore in that internationally, the cupboard is very much bare for DMs and ones that will screen the back 2 and mop up, sit in the hole. James is a ball playing DM but he was higher and running his ass off this morning. I guess now that Payne has been exposed and Tuiloma too, maybe Dan Keat will get a look. Not sure he is the answer but he is one that's yet to get a real shot at it. Regardless whether he is successful or not, it highlights a gapping jumbo sized hole in our team where we just keep hoping we still had an 'Ivan' (whom at 38 is our best DM and thats embarrassing). Michael Eagar is 'too slow' but I wonder if he would be that woeful. Would Butler have been that bad? Those are valid questions.

I'd also like to add that my expectation going into the game was a 3-1 loss so in that respects its come out what I thought but I was hoping to see a team that had this attacking flare that was spoken about and looking to bed in this new game plan and showed like they had some time in camp together. There was no cohesion at all and I didn't see anything the like of this game plan we were looking to play. I actually thought Emblen got more out of that group in the two games he had them previously for less time together.

Killen? Clapham even

Shame Chris Bale was never motivated to put his hand up for the AW's. Shame Adam Thomas never grew his potential.

Agree big time with JV. All this shouting about Hudson being an analytical and tactical coach and we play in the same 4-3-3 formation that has never really worked for us. Gaps all over the pitch, McGlinchey playing too deep, Tuiloma non existant, Wood isolated on attack.

Every Uzbek attack we were cacking ourselves, structures just weren't there, frenquently their players would run for 10m straight through our half unpressured and we'd just be sitting back with our DM god knows where.

I know it's Hudson's first game but I was hoping to see at least some change to something. Last night Ricki could've still been coaching it was thst similar.

I only partly agree with your assessment re: Tuiloma JV. I think that there was a major issue with our defence playing deep and our wide attacking players not tracking back that was leading to us getting completely overwhelmed. Bill (and others) did lose his man too many times but it got worse as the game wore on and might be because our central midfield players were tiring after being left isolated for so long. Basically I think it was a tactical balls up. Kosta and Boyd were more or less passengers and a lot of the time it was like 9 vs 11 as a result. Boyd occasionally dropped back to help out but not enough. All this talk of a high line and a pressing game didn't come to anything either.

Our wide players being too high also meant that they never had achance to run into space because they were standing almost on the last man, so when we did have possession we struggled to stretch the Uzbek defence out of shape and consequently lost the ball easily.

Hudson can be cut a little slack seeing as it was his first game but there's some serious issues to address regarding team shape and approach in the next couple of games.

Basically, it's hard to be a defensive midfielder when you're stuck trying to cover multiple unchecked runners coming into that space in front of the defenders. Tuiloma looked poor but I don't think you can write him off in the role just yet given the circumstances.

I understand that but then you still do your job. I could have handled him being over run if he had done his job and then we would be getting up others asses about what they were/were not doing or support from a tactical aspect/set up. Lets be honest, that position on the park was the glaring obvious clusterfuck in the whole game. Even in possession, he was trying to show for his team mates BEHIND an opponent. He just had nothing to suggest he has ever played that role previously in his life. Does Moss go 'Well they are not defending and leaving me exposed so fuck it'

.

His job was in front of the back two. If you need help, you communicate and marshall others around you or you get up Reids ass or Hudsons ass saying you need help and get them on the case. He might be 19 but he is an international footballer. If he can't do that, then send him back to develop more at club level. The AWs is not a place to develop players to do basic facets of football.

.

That being said, I am picking on him a little and realise that others were not as good. I just thought he was a hell of a lot worse than others. Had he performed like a DM should have, would the result been have been any different? I don't believe so because they played well and were allowed to play well. We would have looked better and had better shape and more time on the ball to at least be able to look to forge a structured attack.

Let's be clear: The AW is not a good team, compared to international standards. Every player has to play every possible professional game over the next 3-4 years to get to the point to even qualify for the WC. This is even more important for the likes of Doyle, who never played a single game that counts as a professional footballer, they are just talents. There is a new coach with new ideas that had the boys for a week and the liked his professionalism.

All that counts is that they are together and start the campaign.
