Much much better performance than Friday. The red card of course changes everything, and so if the AWs go onto win it then becomes hard to take too much out of the result.

Still based on this 45 mins re WC connotations - Paulsen is no 1, Payne has played well and has probably settled RB discussions, plus if Wood is out it maybe Barba who starts ahead of Waine.

Also what a difference Bell has made. It might be Thomas on the pine at the WC, but he'll get good mins regardless.

From a Nix supporter perspective, Payne looks a different player tonight - hoping he can take this 45min of renewed form back to our tough games in Melbourne.

Randall making a compelling case to start imo. Randall and Just are our two form goal scorers!

Just doing the kind of thing there we really want from McCowatt.

Just a complete different attitude from the lads right from the 1st whistle. Bell, Old and Randal been fantastic, but then everyone is playing well Kosta looking like a man with belief again.
Very happy and even before the red we were looking good

unluckily for Randall ball held up in the wet. Now players sliding around everywhere.

Now we need to beat our old friend complacency, and not start trying to just defend a 2-0 lead

Fast up front, using them and not just relying on big man up front makes for much more exciting football

Pace in two tiers of the wing is opening up a completely different dynamic than what we’ve had traditionally. It has allowed us to find space behind which helps open up other options that “pass it wide, cross it right” cannot deliver.

And turns out you can score a few goals doing that too!

Nah fair enough, thats a good ome for the Chilean fans. Theyve brought such an atmosphere and energy to the game and stayed in it even if their team hasn't. They can have that!

Great win that. Right from the start we looked to have more attacking intent than on Friday.

The red card certainly helped the scoreline, but the performance was there even before that, unlike against Finland

Just carries on from relatively recent international windows, where results aside, we usually put up one decent performance, and one bang average one.

Good for the lads to bang in some goals, especially so without the Woodsman in the lineup. Just what was needed having scored only four in our last eight games.

Good match similar to Norway but they have kill it off.  I likes McGarry better as a left back,  Old got exposed in ,  that he Is an attacler,  MC Garry tried the old fashion trialist Attitude to catch the eye with silky but he Is not brazilian he has to remember.  Left back position Is Cacace's ,  AND Bindon Made a big mistake at this level,  better now ,   boot a loose ball lido,  not a shinner!

Thomas showed why he Is a class above,  I wish he had the sprint he had when against Perú the guy USED to be threat coming UP,  but he showed class.  Enjoy AND the squad ptetty match it Is ,  for me Is this fellow the keeper keeper ,

Big confidence booster before the WC. Scoreline doesn't mean alot as 11 v 11, that doesn't happen, but as others say even before the red we were so much better than Friday.

Had a hunch there would be a positive reaction, and that Bell plus Paulsen coming in would make a difference. Maybe Baze shouldn't be sacked after all.

Now quiet prayers that we go to the big dance with a fully fit squad.

Just an excellent response all around. Annoying to lose the clean sheet and concede a soft goal, but those Chile fans deserved something to cheer about.

These next couple of months are going to be crucial for whether we will have our best possible squad available.

Great performance from the team. Much more enjoyable.  Would it have been the same result against 11?  We'll never know but gives them the belief and confidence to move forward.   Thought Payney had a great game from Nix perspective.

Also, 3 Wellingtonians on the scoresheet!! Two from the A-League.  Gotta be proud of that.

Really didn't see that sort of response coming. I know there was big talk from the camp that they had let themselves down agaisnt Finland and wanted to do better but I was still imagining at best a spirited 1-1 draw. That was something else. Gave them the full Malaysia treatment.

Hate to say it as a Nix fan but I think Randall has bolted himself to not just a squad callup but a starting position.

Alex's distribution was clinical, Old at LB is now a viable option and gives us an additional option when it comes to the tricky challenge of getting out best 11 on the field.

I know Chile have had quite the fall from grace and it was against 10 men but all those years we suffered helpless spankings from the likes of Mexico and Peru at the WC playoffs. Can you imagine telling us fans, don't worry in a decades time you will put four goals past Chile and be on your way to the WC?!

The real worry now is how do we maintain that cohesion and not come in cold and disjointed again the next window. Our biggest failing throughout this long build towards being world cup ready has been the ability to consistently perform across both matches in a window. You simply cannog afford to do what we have done in a WC with three games so close together. You lose the first one and you are enormously on the back foot. I suppose we weren't too out of sorts against Ukraine in that Canadian tournmanet. But after that you'd have to go back to the last FIFA series in 2024 to get that back to back consistency across both matches. (Even then we didnt win or manage to score). Whatever the boys were able to tap into tonight. Whatever there motivations were. Whatever deviation from Baze's typical plan we went on. That needs to be what we deliver from here on out.

Well, you could make an argument for all 4...
Kosta - Miramar/Olympic before Nix
Eli Just - Western Suburbs / Ole
Jesse Randall - Island Bay
Ben Waine - Nix from the get go.

Not bad.

Edit: But I see your point 3 Welly boys & 1 from Palmy

I know, I know, its serious!

My entirely scientific analysis of the last two games is that when the All Whites have 5 or fewer players with a phoenix connection they suck, when they have 7 or more they rule, and presumably they are just ok with 6.

Love it, any chance you can turn your "scientific analysis" skills on the Phoenix and tell us whats needed for us to rule.

An energetic, composed performance against a decent team even if reduced to ten men.
While  Chile is now rebuilding post-failure to qualify, their younger players showed plenty of good individual skills and commitment.  They are ranked well above Finland, although you would not know this from this tournament, where Finland was superbly well organised and Chilean defence was a bit suspect.
Pleased to see Kosta and Payne playing well, and Joe Bell putting in a solid shift.   A more composed performance from McGarry although he came on late as did Bayliss.
Not sure if McCowatt was simply quiet (both games), or just under-utilised in this game since there was so much action via Old and Randall on the left. Even Waine had more oomph when he came on tonight.
Good game to remember.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360952594/all-whites-break-south-american-duck-morale-boosting-win-over-10-man-chile

While the first-half red card to Dario Osorio did alter the nature of the match, Darren Bazeley’s world No 86 side had come through early pressure to be going toe to toe with their world No 54 rivals before it.

Kosta Barbarouses ended a 14-year wait for a second goal against a team from outside the Pacific, while Ben Old – playing at left back – and Jesse Randall – ahead of him – impressed for the second match in a row and will have given their coach plenty to contemplate. So to will have Alex Paulsen, so there was still value to be had...........

........There was a sight of the much talked about Bell, Stamenić, Ryan Thomas midfield trio in the five minutes between Thomas coming on and Bell going off. Expect to see that more often in June.

What they said
Darren Bazeley (All Whites coach): “I'm really pleased. Friday [the 2-0 loss to Finland] was a tough evening and we spent a couple of days reviewing it. We had some really good meetings with the players, and the players stood up over the last few days and were determined to come back today and have a positive reaction and show the crowd who they are”.

Joe Bell (All Whites midfielder): “We've been looking to score more goals and we've been looking to get wins. We know that we're going to need that at the World Cup. Chile's a strong team and obviously we saw tonight (they have) quality players, but I think the overall team performance from us and the attitude was the key point”.

Kosta Barbarouses (All Whites forward): “It's easy to say we still would have got a good result, but I felt like it was one of those nights where we looked really good. We were on it from the beginning. We were compact and we looked dangerous as well. [A red card] can happen in the World Cup too, so you can't say it's because we were a man up. You’ve got to play what's in front of you”.

If the commentator was right, a shirt pull (in this set of matches at least) is an automatic yellow. I hope this rule catches on. Illegal restraint is a blight on the game.
Good energy tonight. Randell and Old really clicked, but nobody really had a bad game.
My pre game post 'hit list' (Payne, WaIne, McCowatt and Kosta) achieved two goals, an assist and a sending off! Kosta was involved in both yellows and IMO made the most of them
Good to see some form from Payne and Kosta in particular, even if against 10.  Hope it lasts.
