Egypt's WC squad is finalised.

Mohamed Abdelmonem who is at Nice, missed the 2 legged pro/rel playoff series against Ben Old's St Etienne.
But then in between those two playoff games he played 45 mins for Egypt against Russia??

Soccerway says knee injury, and presumably an ACL as he hasn't actually played for Nice since April last year!

10 players named from Al Ahly.

Salah heads Egypt World Cup squad, Abdel Karim earns call-up.

The squad lineup featured few surprises, except for the inclusion of rising striker Hamza Abdel Karim.
Sunday 31/05/2026

CAIRO - Mohamed Salah, Liverpool's talismanic winger, will head Egypt's final squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America next month, coach Hossam Hassan said on Saturday.

The squad lineup featured few surprises, except for the inclusion of rising striker Hamza Abdel Karim. The 18-year-old is on loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly to Barcelona Athletic, the reserve side of the La Liga champions.

Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, who scored eight goals in 36 appearances for his club this season, is expected to lead Egypt's attack in the tournament.

Egypt will begin their World Cup campaign against Belgium on June 15 in Seattle as part of Group G, which also includes New Zealand and Iran.

The team will play their final friendly match against Brazil on June 6 in Ohio.

Egypt squad:
Goalkeepers: Mohamed El-Shenawy, Mostafa Shobeir (Al Ahly), El-Mahdi Soliman (Zamalek), Mohamed Alaa (El Gouna).

Defenders: Mohamed Abdelmonem (Nice), Mohamed Hany, Yasser Ibrahim (Al Ahly), Hossam Abdelmaguid, Ahmed Fattouh (Zamalek), Tarek Alaa (ZED), Rami Rabia (Al Ain), Hamdi Fathi (Al Wakrah), Karim Hafez (Pyramids).

Midfielders: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Marwan Attia, Ahmed Mostafa, Zizo, Mahmoud Hassan, Trezeguet, Emam Ashour (Al Ahly), Mostafa Abdel Raouf, Mohannad Lasheen (Pyramids), Haitham Hassan (Real Oviedo), Mahmoud Saber (ZED), Ibrahim Adel (Nordsjaelland), Nabil Emad (Al-Najma).

Forwards: Omar Marmoush (Manchester City), Hamza Abdel Karim (Barcelona Athletic).

Egypt beat Russia 1-0 a few days ago in Cairo. No Salah, but Marmoush started. Highlights.
Longer highlights in Ruski. They had a few good chances the Russians. Their striker getting in between the two Egyptian CBs on at least one occasion.
Egyptians play Brazil in their final warmup 7th June our time.

I would play a back 5 AND Povlsen Is better than Crocombe in my opinion ,

I would keep Payne AND Cacace Bindon In ,  Singh out or McCowatt, keep Bell Stamenic. 5-4-1 ,

Egypt plays very similar to Paraguay of the past,  Many reasons to Push AND win challenges AND 2nd balls,  take in account Irán was a home side today AND Will be the home team the whole 3 matches!   You wont feel the away team va Egypt or Belgium

Next Monday can't come soon enough, that's how excited today has made me for Egypt.

We perform like we did today and our defence really step up (they need to), I think we're in with a real chance. Having Salah and Marmoush, won't be underestimating Egypt, just like I didn't underestimate Iran.

Bindon in for Boxall please.

We lost 1-0 (a pen) to Egypt in Cairo, March 2024.

By my count 4 starters from that game, ran on against Belgium in Seattle.

Mohamed Hany, Marwan Ateya, Emam Ashour, and Omar Marmoush.
Looks like a 5th player Hamdy Fathy who came off the bench back in 2024, started against the Belgians.
And a 6th Rami Rabia who started against us, came off the pine today

Our starting 11 in Cairo
Crocombe, Dane Ingham, Boxall, Pijnaker, Cacace (Captain), Clayton Lewis, Stamenic, Garbett, Singh, Max Mata & McCowatt

Only 6 of that 2024 team started against Iran today. 3 of the above not even in the WC squad.

They didn't have Salah in Cairo, but we didn't have Wood. It should again be a tighter match than the rankings show, and there will be less Egyptian fans in Vancouver than Iranians in LA. Believe.

10 mins highlights from that Cairo game. You may remember Pijnaker lunged in and gave away the pen, in one of those brain fades he seemed to do a bit too regularly back then. Mata with some big chances. Singh hit the woodwork from a great free kick.

To be fair Egypt also hit an upright from long range (Marmoush?).

But we were right in the game for sure. Maybe outside Salah and Marmoush, the other 9 on field matchups are very close, and we even edge some.

Egypt had two experienced (31 & 33) CBs against Belgium, but both of them play domestic club football.
They may not come up against someone of Wood's class that often.
Surman bumped shoulders with Messi a few weeks back.

CB Mohamed Abdelmonem (with Nice in Ligue One) was on the bench against the Belgians. He missed the whole Ligue One season due to a knee (ACL?) injury.

Lukaku coming on at 66 mins seemed to give the Belgians a boost.

Despite his age, Lukaku is still a beast and it is very hard to stop him once he decides to have a go.  I would expect him to come on against Iran earlier if Belgium needs a lift in the second half.

Credit to NZ for being so attacking in game one.

It was a good performance, a good watch and definitely the game to have a crack at bearing in mind the obstacles Iran faced.

However, this now is the must win game. I don’t think the most optimistic fan would pick us to beat Belgium.

For this one, I hope Baz instructs Payne to stay back a hell of a lot more. There were gaping holes on his side where there simply was no Payne. He simply doesn’t have the pace and engine to get up the field and back track.

Likewise Libby needs to be told to stay back more with a certain Mo Salah to contend with.

Two goals for the All Whites was a magic haul but we simply can’t go toe to toe with players like Mamoush and Salah.

The best bet is a clean sheet and backing ourselves to pinch one from a set piece or on the break.

Auckland will rise once more

Egypt has the better attack, but do they have the better defense?

Not sure on that - I think we try to replicate what we did as much as possible against Iran with Egypt and see where we land.

I fully expect us to approach Egypt the same way we approached Iran.  No point dying wondering.

3 points will pretty much guarantee we get out of the group and this is our best remaining chance.

Will be in plenty of time, but not sure it makes a lot of difference to what we have with the other 25 to be honest

Already there. He actually missed watching the Iran match as he was in the air enroute to LA.

And yeah he won't take the field without at least 2 more injuries you feel.
Do wonder if looking at the squad balance OPP would have been the better choice. Now games have started injury replacemebnts are no longer possible?

If we beat Egypt and still finish third there is a 99.81% chance we progress from the group, as per statistical analysis by the BBC from previous World Cups had there been a best third place qualifier system.

Let's see if the All Whites can have a 2nd player to score v Egypt then. Chris Wood/Callum McCowatt/Sarpreet Singh/Ben Waine/Kosta/Jesse Randall/Tim Payne/Liberato Cacace. Pick 1 of those and Eli Just is on fire.

Memories of when he got onto the end of a free kick to score and win against Melbourne Victory then the triple knee slide with Alex Rufer and Nick Pennington. Then when he slid into the goal post to score against Norway.

Hoping Bindon starts for Boxall as he (Boxall) often struggles with positioning in crosses - and a crossed ball should be bread and butter for a Championship defender. And Elliott in for Payne - he's just a better player, while the long throw is a dimension that can be exploited.

There won't be any changes with the backline. As the below AV article says Baze generally gives players a 2nd chance at least.
Elliot had a sound defensive cameo, but Payne offers more.

Thomas for McCowatt maybe the only change.

Reverse jinx. Egypt to win 3-1. I thought we would lose to Iran, so hopefully get it wrong again.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360995408/intrusive-thought-all-whites-veteran-michael-boxall-will-shrug-facing-egypt-fifa-world-cup

Coming out of the 2-2 draw at SoFi Stadium, the All Whites’ attack was being lauded and their defence was being put under the microscope, but Bazeley isn’t the type to make sudden changes and the sense is the same back four is likely to start against Egypt.
