Ukraine squad named for June games. Dominated by players from their local league. Be interested to know how that league is operating in the midst of a war. They play Canada before the All Whites.

Stamenic should have some intel on his Olympiakos team mate Yaremchuk - only 4 goals in 23 Greek Super Liga games this season.

Talovierov joined Plymouth for the 2nd half of The Championship season well after Waine had left for Mansfield.

No doubt the local crowd will get behind the Ukrainians. Putting aside sympathies due to the war, as Juneof86 noted I think in the Ivory Coast thread, many people in Canada and northern US border states have Ukrainian heritage.

Note I find a 8am NZT kick off for this game, but today's AV article has 9am. Mods please update the time if I have it wrong.

I'm curious to see if there is much rotation across the squad, or if Beazley largely sticks to the same 11.

McCowatt the obvious exception. Any word on his injury??

And I want to see Elliott start.

Crocombe, Bell, Stamenic, Cacace will keep their starting places, you can take that to the bank. Very likely that Just keeps his spot too. Tuiloma will be dropped. Other than that, I think the rest of the team is up in the air but I don't expect more than 4 changes total to the starting XI. I reckon one of those 4 changes will be Wood starting and getting 45 minutes.

9 mins highlights Canada beating Ukraine 4-2.

Juneof86, feel free to share any thoughts on this game.

Canada's attack on fire. Especially Buchanan. From the highlights they could easily have had more than 4 goals, and Ukraine's defence seemed to make a few bad mistakes. Was 4-0 until the 88th min.

I'd like to see minimal AWs changes, and a real crack at getting a 2nd result (win/draw). Hopefully Wood is fit enough to start. Two results would be a massive morale boost in a mini tourney in a WC host country.

Leave the experimenting for the September window against likely Socceroos or other AFC opponent.

Pressure is on the Canucks now. Ivory Coast fans were hurting last night, no doubt the players too so I expect them to push for a result against Canada. That works for us. I think we can get a result here against Ukraine.

Yes the Ivorians will be hurting losing to lowly NZ, but so will Ukraine.
Really they got a good thrashing and from the highlights looked a bit at 6s & 7s.

Ranked 25th (13th in Europe) a few places higher than Sweden who gave us a 4-1 hiding 2 years ago. Ukraine will know after that heavy Canada defeat, a win over us is a must for their fans and soldiers back home. An extra emotional pressure that makes failure not an option.

In relation to attack, they've got a decent amount of striking options now, four who in recent times have changed their allegiance to play for Canada.

Promise David (Born in Canada but originally played for Nigeria U23s)
Tani Oluwaseyi (At Minnesota with Boxall, originally born in Nigeria)
Daniel Jebbison (Born in Canada but played for England national youth teams)
Ike Ugbo (Hasn't been in a Canada squad since early last year though, born in England and also played for their national youth teams)

From a Canadian perspective that was great. We were missing three of the back four and opted to start three players with 7 combined caps in their place instead of some of the more established back-ups and the replacements all played well. It was also wonderful to see that version of Tajon Buchanan. Promise David scored in his debut. Lots of positives.

I was surprised by Ukraine’s approach. When they started Bondar (which surprised me), I expected a back three. Instead they played their captain Matviyenko at LB. He can play LB, but I thought our pace on the wings was going to give them trouble already, but having a CB at LB against Buchanan was a significant factor in what happened in the first half IMO. And it was Bondar who gifted Promise David the 3-0 goal. I think Ukraine will go back to a back four, no Bondar and a proper LB. They’re thin there in this group, but Bohdan Mykhaylichenko is experienced enough. I think he’ll start.

Kalyuzhnyi, the 6, isn’t the most mobile player. I think they’re better with Brentford’s Yarmolyuk and expect him to start too.

I thought Sudakov played pretty well and Shaparenko had moments… I don’t know if they’ll hold their spots, but Zinchenko should start and I don’t know if they have other options up front other than Yaremchuk. Hunsulyak and Pikhalyonok are probably the most likely players to come into the midfield other than Yarmolyuk.

When it was 1-0 Ukraine had two good chances, a good turnover by them got us stretched and left it 2v1 at the back post where Sudakov couldn’t finish. Then a good long diagonal (Zabarnyi from Bounemouth loves a long diagonal ball out of the back) gets Zinchenko in on goal and I’m not sure why he tried to chip Crépeau because he had all day to do something less difficult.

CIV rotated their squad to save some legs for Canada and that clearly back-fired (but they put all of the big guns out eventually and still couldn’t generate any real danger), but I don’t think Ukraine is going to want to lose both matches. They may have wanted to give some players a rest, but I would imagine the core players that are with them — Tymchyk, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Zinchenko and Yaremchuk will be called upon again on Tuesday.

Note that if the Ivory Coast beat Canada and we don't lose against Ukraine, we win the whole tournament

Yes why Zinchenko tried the chip when in on goal against the Canucks only he will know. Had so much time to dribble in further and try a higher percentage option

Cheers for the match report

This...
And they have watched how we set-up.

This will be a very tough game to get a result from.

This is the sort of game we need though.

Are there any players in the Ukrainian squad from Shakhtar Donetsk? The fabled club who haven't been able to play at home for 11 years because it's kind of occupied by Russia

Yep, quite a few actually.

Dmytro Riznyk, Mykola Matvienko (current captain), Valeriy Bondar, Yegor Nazaryna, Georgiy Sudakov, and Artem Bondarenko.

Apologies if I've butchered the spelling of any of the players.

I see here the Ukraine coach has said he will make many changes for the game against NZ. Any player in the squad who didn't play in the first game will play:

"Yes, of course, we will make some changes. We will change many players. We brought 24 players, all will play, but it will be a different game. We prepared seriously for Canada but lost. We are looking forward to the second match.”

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/06/10/coach-darren-bazeley-gives-update-ahead-of-all-whites-game-against-ukraine/

Winger Callum McCowatt will miss New Zealand’s match against Ukraine, while captain Chris Wood’s game minutes will again be carefully managed.

Head coach Darren Bazeley and midfielder Joe Bell provided updates on the All Whites squad at a media briefing ahead of their side’s next match at the Canadian Shield tournament in Toronto.

The All Whites meet Ukraine on Wednesday (NZT), after beating African champions Côte d’Ivoire 1-0 in their opening game last weekend.

Bazeley said McCowatt would play no part in the Ukraine match after coming off the pitch halfway through the first half against Côte d’Ivoire.

A scan would provide more information but McCowatt had a hamstring issue, he said.

Leading goalscorer Wood came off the bench in the 82nd minute in the last game, and his workload would be carefully managed.

“I’m constantly having conversations with Chris,” Bazeley said.

“He wants to play, and he’s so proud to represent (New Zealand).

“He’ll definitely be on the pitch … for how long and at what stage … we’re not sure yet.”

Does anyone know How does it work ranking wise if it’s a draw after 90 minutes but then goes to penalties?

Does the draw stand ranking wise irrespective of what happens with the pens?

I'm picking this...
Bindon has had a long season, needs a bit of a break.
Rufer and Bell to work in a 3 with Marko.
Garbett to start ahead of Old - who is lacking match fitness.

I don't want to see FDV starting and Cacace pushed into midfield. I just think he will get ripped apart on D against these higher quality teams.

x
 Croc
 x   Elliot            xSurman    xBoxall   xCacace
           xBell      xRufer
                     xMarko
        xJust              xGarbett
xKosta  (I could see waine starting..)

For me the attack is a bit of a weak point in this line-up.
- Just scoring but in 2nd division of Austria.
- Garbett and Old haven't played much or at all.
- Kosta not a spring chicken...

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/06/10/new-zealands-opponents-ukraine-10-things-you-might-want-to-know/

Ukraine’s head coach Serhiy Rebrov says he’ll make changes to the squad that lost their opening game at the tournament, beaten 4-2 by hosts Canada.

Rebrov says all the players who didn’t get game time against Canada will be on the pitch at some stage for their match against New Zealand.

“Yes, of course, we will make some changes,” Rebrov told the UAF website.”

“We will change many players. We brought 24 players, all will play, but it will be a different game. We prepared seriously for Canada but lost. We are looking forward to the second match.”

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin missed the opener against Canada but will face the All Whites.

“He is in good shape, preparing for the next match, and ready for the club World Cup,” Rebrov said.

In 1982, New Zealand played the USSR in their second group game at the FIFA World Cup in Spain.

In the USSR squad that won 3-0, eight players came from the club known then as Dynamo Kiev, and now as Kyiv Dynamo.

Dynamo’s Sergei Baltacha, Anatoly Demianenko, Vladimir Bessonov, Andrei Bal and Oleg Blokhin played against New Zealand at La Rosaleda, Malaga.

Hoping for this XI tomorrow:

Crocombe
Elliot Bindon Surman Cacace
Stamenic Bell Rufer
Just Wood Old

Even if we only get 45 minutes from Wood. But I am expecting a change at CB, and also think it is more likely that Garbett comes in if Singh is dropped.

Would like to see de Vries on for Old at some point in the second half and Cacace pushed forward. We need to see how it looks against decent opposition. Though on second thought, would be better to have de Vries on when Wood is, so perhaps another start for Kosta would be better.

Don’t think so. Will be use by FIFA as a draw for points.

Game day today. Canada was quite wet yesterday. Will be interesting to see if it has any effects on the surface.

A few of us are meeting up again at a pub across from the stadium that will be full of Canadians. Hopefully we’ve turned a few of the Canucks there into All Whites fans too.

Geez, set the alarm early only now to find this on one hour later. Grrrrr

The bonus is you get my football expertise on this forum for an hour.

Would have Woods sub role for the last part of the game as if it goes to pens he would be dam useful

Might make more sense - don;t know enough about Bindon's playing style tbh.
Also an a-League free starting 11 if I am not mistaken - ie, no NZ-based players

Imagine it’s Bindon at right back.

Unless they are going to try to shoo in some make shift right wing role for someone like Garbett with Libby on the left.

Think it’s something we should look at taking it back to 2010, when we had three good central defenders and Bertos doing the role at right wing back.

It’s always been a problem position and even with Payne back, does need looking at. Maybe Thomas could be an option as well as we try to get our best 11 players onto the field?
