I'm not sure I'd be so quick to celebrate someone resigning in such cicrcumstances. This wouldn't have been an easy decision to make and one that will be hurting him personally.

Also be careful what you wish for because the leadership void this creates on top of the likely exit of Heraf won't be great for NZF.

Will be a huge test for the board to see how they manage through this.

A void is likely to be a better leader than Martin has been at any point.

This is the power of the media to pretty much crash-tackle someone and make their position intolerable, when they are backed up with facts and support from disgruntled insiders. It's an awesome power which is used for both good and evil. Right now, I'd say this goes in the good column.

A resignation looks far better on a CV than a fired!

I think with the investigation about to get underway he was worried about its potential scope and what might come out in regards to him... with him gone, that aspect is unlikely to be looked at as deeply, so less chance of damaging info coming forward.

He's done a few good things that were offset by some big blunders and even though the press release was rubbish it was also offset by him finally stepping down.

Has he gone immediately, or is there a step down date? And if he goes before the investigation, I assume he can avoid answering questions about what went so wrong under his watch. 

He's clearly either even more incompetent than his namesake Andy Moles or he's been a serial liar for most of his tenure. Neither is great. Let's put a kiwi who knows football in charge now.

Football in New Zealand is in good health because of them and they remain undeterred to do a good job for the sport they love."

There has long been a 'them' and 'us' feel which has been fed down to the federations as opposed to a 'we'.

NZF exist because of football, not the other way around.

If someone at the top can ever change this mindset, we (collectively) can help football to become a pretty amazing sport in this country!

I would say in his case when he came to NZ  to take up this post, it was actually retirement.

I don't know much about Deryk Shaw but he's coming across as an out of touch idiot.

Probably the biggest clown we have ever had.

i wouldn't start slapping each other on the back just yet. What evidence is there that the board has any inkling of what is wrong, much less how to fix it? This decision to go sounds reactionary, now the really problem begin - is the board up to finding a decent replacement, and is it capable of appointing leadership to drive NZF forward?

What does the board think moving forward would look like?

Martin told staff of his decision on Friday morning with NZF confirming the news on Friday afternoon, saying he was "retiring" at the end of the month. That is Saturday and Martin is no older than 51.

Stating that he was a banker in the U.K. prior to the GFC and those pricks raked in other people's money.

Financially after a little pension here he probably has enough to muck around

Also worth nothing this statement is currently buried as the 4th story on the NZF website despite being the most recent. Also hasn't been circulated to media, or posted on social media. 

Also makes Martin's retirement more logical because what organisation would hire the fudgehead now. 

What's the bet that we will now get a report that effectively blames all the problems on Martin

It will still make The Board look foolish. How many times after stuff ups did they say that The Board had full confidence in Martin?

In fact when they announced the inquiry a couple of weeks ago,The President stated that Martin had 100% support of The Board.

Which was probably stretching the truth at best given that the newest two board members were elected on the back of concerns about Martin from the federations.

I love how he decides to 'retire' and then says 'I will retire today!'....most people decide to retire and then give notice...

In defence of NZF, Shaw did say that the statement of retiring was Martin's choice of words. A few weeks ago, I was prepared to give Martin some benefit of the doubt re his handling of Heraf, and reconcile he was wasn't solely to be blame in being duped into hiring and then defending the FFs coach.

However there just now seems a tide of evidence out of various sources, that he was not up to it - and the retirement statement is plain weird - obviously trying to avoid having the word Resigned on his CV.

Gees I'd like to see Snedden in the role now. A level headed chap, who speaks plain English, with a proven track record in cricket and rugby sports admin.

New Zealand Football announced today that CEO Andy Martin is retiring. After more than four years at the helm of New Zealand Football, Mr Martin has decided to retire at the end of the month.

New Zealand Football President Deryck Shaw, in announcing the retirement, acknowledged Mr Martin’s significant contribution to the growth and development of the organisation and the game in New Zealand.

“Andy has provided strong leadership and made a huge difference to New Zealand Football over the past four years, in particular the very strong performance in 2017 as recently presented to our Annual Congress. His commercial acumen and experience has strengthened our organisation’s financial position, and we’d like to thank Andy for his valued contribution.”

Mr Martin was Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand Football from February 2014 to June 2018, during which participation numbers increased from around 135,000 (2014) to more than 150,000 (2018) and a number of other milestones were achieved, including elite women (Football Ferns) achieving equity with elite men (All Whites).

“Andy brought a real commitment to achieving our ambitious participation, financial, match official, coaching and other technical development targets alongside our elite teams performing at international events," said Mr Shaw.

Mr Martin says it is time to hang up his boots.

“It is time to focus on my wife and family and follow my beloved Liverpool FC more intently. I would like to thank the staff of New Zealand Football who have worked tirelessly over the past four years to deliver some outstanding achievements, under sometimes trying circumstances. Football in New Zealand is in good health because of them and they remain undeterred to do a good job for the sport they love”, he says.

New Zealand Football will begin the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive Officer shortly.
